Sadly never applied to me while in retail, the last time power went out AND the back-up generators failed the folks at the head office said, 'crack open some flashlights and start customer servicing" I don't know which was stupidier; the fact we had to pull out calculators at the tills or the fact customers were still coming in and getting mad we couldn't accept credit or debit

I may have told this story here before, but in like 2005ish?, during the LA power brownouts in the Enron scandal, my job lost power in the middle of the day.
We were like 20 people in a windowless room, so it turned pitch black... with the exception of my glow in the dark shirt, which made me the only visible thing.
I have been chasing that high for goddamn 20 years.

No power just means you're not doing work that you have to do later. Or machines getting stopped mid process so you have to start all over again. "Cleaning up" after a power outage is no fun at all and not worth the brief moment of not being able to work.

In case of a lathe, you can kill the part and/or destroy the tool, then you have to spend the next few hours setting it back up correctly. (To be fair, the tool changer on mine is badly designed, so setting it back up correctly can be a slog)

In my case it's 3d printers. Depending on which one it is, it can be a loss of anything from 30 minutes to a couple of days for a re-print. No real risk of damage though fortunately.

Ink printing, here. It's usually no damage but cleaning ink and resin in the dark (with backup generators and forklift lights) for 30 minutes to an hour is no fun. And it usually means more work or overtime.

I work on an old annealing furnace. Power outage means I have about 15 seconds to vent off the ammonia flow to the hydrogen dissociator before it ruptures and causes a gas leak. The power outage cuts off the gas flow, but it's still under a lot of pressure.

I went to a very small off-shoot of a USA college in another country on a military base for my last two years for my teaching degree. Classes were 8 weeks long and you couldn’t miss more than 2 classes to pass… so yes technically an adult in my late 20s but not like the lower level classes of taking the final even if you aren’t there and passing the case anyway.

99% of the work I did at my old WFH job was dependent on having a working internet connection. If the power went out, so did my productivity for the duration.

This happened to me 1 time and I really didn’t want to go into the office so instead, I drove to one of my local supermarket that also has a small food court dinning area and just worked from there. I’m very grateful to that place.

My girlfriend has to drive to the office if the internet goes out. Needless to say, a $100 uninterruptible power supply is key.

I would do this but I’m not sure an uninterruptible power source can last me a full 8 hour work day to power my laptop and my phone/internet router. Maybe it can. I just haven’t looked into it.

There's units that would last you months without power. It just comes down to what you want to spend. A $50 battery on battery hookup and a portable inverter would get you a few days, although it's not going to be "uninterruptible". You could throw a few lights and the fridge on it, though.
