I work at a hospital and we just had an incident involving threats. The hospital went into a pseudo lockdown mode but fortunately nothing came of it.

If you had shown this to me before the pandemic I would have disagreed with you. Since the pandemic I’ve lost count of the minor injuries/attacks, but I’ve had three patients hit me in the face, one punch me in the stomach, and I’ve witnessed two different patients chase two different nurses on two different floors into rooms to attack them- one of whom was 8 mos pregnant. And I’ve been doing this for ten years, for reference.

I genuinely believe violence is what happens when people are unable to express themselves- verbally in particular. Not being able to find the right words or knowing how to describe something, particularly an important something, can be maddening. Lose the ability to speak for yourself and what’s left to make yourself understood? But that’s just my own personal theory that is likely riddled with fallacies, including confirmation bias.

Yeah, back when I worked in a hospital, the thing that they drill into you is NEVER let anyone piggyback through a door off of you scanning your badge. This was especially true for the maternity ward. Had a guy try this on me once. I pointed out the phone he needed to use to page the nurse's station, be verified as an approved visitor, and wait for them to buzz him in. Luckily he was approved but a month later an alert went out about a different guy who wasn't approved trying to kick the door in

When leaving a facility, I have had to stand there and tell people no, I can't let you in because you don't have your badge on you. Go talk to security. I have also had to go to security and have them walk me back to my desk to show them my badge. And this was just an admin building, no patients at all.

We get told to not let others piggy back with our ID's. It happened once but the person was escorted out soon after. Every time I go to the doctors office or the hospital, I wonder if it is going to be my last time alive, It is stupid, but there are a lot of stupid people out there now.

Cops carry a small arsenal in their cars, are allowed to open fire on anyone for any reason, and are not legally compelled to intervene in dangerous situations. They are in very little danger comparably.

You could have read that in a Civil Service training book. That's something they tried to drive home to people wanting to become cops. It's not like the movies and TV shows make it seem. It's a lot of mundane desk work. You will probably go your whole career without drawing your weapon.

This has basically nothing to do with mental health. The issue is 25+ years of fetishizing guns and gutting all social safety net systems to help people live safe, dignified lives. The biggest driver of violent crime is socioeconomic alienation, which results from having a permanent underclass the system is rigged against.

Those in institutions were there for many reasons, but most couldn't take care of themselves - not to say the institutions were a good place to live. Pick any issue and in x steps or less, connect it to Reagan. Used to play that game a lot when I (Scandinavian at uni) took some american studies. I've never known anyone to fail at convincingly ending the blame on reagan. I wrote an exam paper on it and was repulsed by how easy it is to find places and sources that openly revere him still, even in your academia.
