Things in the states are only getting worse. Friends and family are terrified of getting trapped here with nowhere safe to hide. I want to leave the country. My partner and I don’t speak other languages, we don’t have unique skills, and I don’t even know where to start. I’m just scared, depressed, and constantly anxious, and if you’re scared too, you’re not alone.
belindashort
Just remember that if you are able to leave it's a huge privilege.
If there's no one to fight, the people who are less fortunate than us are stuck here left to the wolves
walpurrga
Depending on your age, you could go become an au pair for a year or 2, that would give you a foot in the door. With a language course and applications for an apprenticeship or similar, you could get a long term visa. If one of you makes it, the other may be able to stay as well (if youre married). Im talking about EU countries.
Strategicgnomer
Find a resistance group, join them, get armed, get ready. Don't give up on the good people still there. Be proactive. Help hide victims. Organize protests. Be part of the solution, the world relies on you to handle your own government and not fall to tyranny.

Start checking skills shortage lists for other Countries, its probably the quickest way to move without seeking some sort of asylum. Here's ours down the bottom of the world in little ol Aotearoa NZ:

Passport. Birth certificate. Don't worry about languages, most of the world speak English just fine. You can worry about the local language once you've landed somewhere. Then you learn by doing. Many countries also offer language courses for immigrants and refugees.
Remember, as a US citizen, you get double-taxed if you earn more than a certain amount per year (local and US income tax), so you're going to have to make a choice at some point.
billstranger
I think at this point you should just ignore the US tax.
b0stark
Eh. Alas, there are many agreements around between countries. Depending on the country you end up in, said country could take that money from your salary before it's even paid out, and send it to the US. You'd also risk being deported, fined and/or jailed. So.. You'd either pay up, or risk jail if you ever returned to the US (or go to a country with extradition agreements). Feel free to ignore, but be ready for the consequences.
Sherpafish
May I suggest becoming an agricultural worker in a nation with better prospects? /s... I'm so sorry your government is now an oligarchy, OP. The USA has been an uneven playing field for so long, now it is in full tilt mode.
whoatherebigfella
You seem to be getting inner joy from your post. What country do you live in?
Sherpafish
No joy. Only a long period of observation, and an a tragically predictable result. Gallows humour, if you will. And I live in Canada, we too are going to elect a populist corporate shill into power next election, at the cost of our environment, international standing, and general humanity. Cheers!

You could consider teaching English abroad -- if you're a native speaker with passable social skills, it's quite easy to get your foot in the door. Latin America, SE Asia and China have quite low barriers to entry. It doesn't pay super well, but it's an easy way to get a job abroad.
HMU if you want some more info -- I did it for about 10 years, and I might be able to help.
iusedtodream
What company would you suggest working for?
curnsington
It depends heavily on where in the world you would like to teach, since different networks/franchises have varying degrees of presence in different areas.
I worked for International House, who are more of a loose network. They make it easy to move between schools if you decide to move country, but quality varies wildly.
Berlitz is another franchise, but I'm not sure if it is worth it. The other big one I am aware of is British Council (you don't have to be British to work there).
iusedtodream
Groovy! Thank you ☺️
TalleyZorah
There are many, MANY countries that speak English, need English-speakers, and/or have so many expats that there are English-speaking towns for lack of better words (ex. Roma neighborhood in Mexico City). You also don’t necessarily need special skills depending on the country, though it definitely makes a difference. Nowhere will be perfect.
Your first step is a passport and any important documents like birth certificates/etc.
Puolitettupuolituttu
Not to mention that even anglophones can learn new languages.
mormacil
You do need skills to qualify for places like Australia and the entire EU. There not that many countries that accept unskilled migrants without a nice fat check to support the economy. Illegal migration exist for a reason, who is welcome is very tightly regulated to "protect our own citizens".

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship.html There are two tracks, and don’t dismiss the skilled migrant category, which is basically a points system, in which special skills, including coding, are added to speaking English, having a potential job offer, etc. You can look at Indeed (change settings to Canada), but there are also some accessible jobs at https://www.csn-rec.ca/job-postings Good luck.
PunkRage
How strange... My internet crashes when I attempt to reach this link.
XSurvivor
There is a huge backlog for this program, the skilled workers category is only accepting applications during a very short period of time each year. There are thousands of qualified people with unique skills still waiting, you are not getting accepted if your only qualification is "speaking English". And until the US is officially reclassified, no American will be getting a refugee status.
bitwize
As a Canadian, this seems like a bad call to make. Canada is already facing an economic crisis due to immigration, and many of its citizens wanting deportation of unskilled laborers. Between that and the US threats of annexation (or let’s be real, possible impending war), I can’t say we would be the safest place to come to
teberoth
Agreed, I think we are in for a rough patch. OP is welcome of course, but I'm expecting the next few years are going to be rough. If language is your main fear, there are several English speaking countries to consider; obviously all the UK, Aus and NZ should be pretty easy to adapt too. Bahamas and Singapore are also viable, and if you don't mind the winter most of the Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Denmark) have very high English levels to ease you in
DrOsmium
Canada is also on track to put their own Trump in power in the next election, though the polling has been shifting due to the shitshow in the US.
ThomWill
Dear Canadian friend, please just fucking invade us. We want Healthcare too! In exchange, I promise to try and learn to say more than just a few naughty phrases in French. Deal?
veesee
People need to stop saying come to Canada. Pur doors need to be closed to Americans right now. I know it's harsh but we can't afford to let the people who.voted trump come in and theres no way to know. They bring their racism here.
On top of that we have an immigration crisis that has led to a huge cost of living crisis. We need to fix some things around here.
Baron29
I'd close the doors to many Americans, but not legit refugees, which I consider OP to be. The danger is real.
veesee
Look i get the want to help. I was that was last time trump was elected. But seeing what's going on in canada.... we've taken in a LOT of refugees without the infrastructure for it. We have so many Canadians that are homeless or on the brink of homelessness because we let too many people in too fast.
I get how easy it is to be scared in the us right now but there are blue states that people can go to to be protected, they do have the option to start fighting back 1/2
veesee
They are not running from bombs like Palestinians, syrians, and Ukrainians. We need to worry about THOSE refugees right now and not the Americans who are not waking up with bombs 5 feet from their house. They can still fix this. Ukraine, Syria, and Palestine don't have that option right now.
spookyactionatadistance
Immigration is not the cause of the housing crisis. That's conservative BS. The cause of the housing crisis is greed. We had similar housing crisis before the last wave of refugees
veesee
Its not conservative bs and you are quite frankly incorrect. Housing crisises do not happen from ONE wave of refugees. It happens over a period of time where we admit too many people to a country or region without building homes for them.
Our new home builds have NOT kept up with the millions of students, refugees, and visa admissions we have allowed to enter the country.
Especially in major metro areas where there is limited space to continue building.
Digitalwolf
If you speak English as a native speaker watch YouTube videos about teaching English abroad

@op this. I got a job teaching in Japan. That said, there are 'black' companies to avoid. They will hire you. It will be terrible to work for them. But. It would get you out of the country.
Get your passport first. Good luck.

Now you know how Mexicans, Guatemalan, Haitians, and other refugees feel. ....
thefinglongerer
Ironically, the immigrants are better prepared than us.
whoatherebigfella
I would imagine that anyone wanting to immigrate to the US has done a boat load of research in order to reduce the chance of being told no.

If you have European ascendants you might qualify for a passport. Otherwise each country has different requirements but one you are a resident of one, you qualify for the 27: https://immigration-portal.ec.europa.eu/index_en

Of those, only Italy allows a no-limit ancestry. Most other countries only look back to parents, grandparents or great-grandparents.

Do whatever you have to do to get a nursing degree. Countries like the uk, Canada, Australia have visa programs for nurses because there's always a shortage, and they favour English speaking nurses. After a certain time on a skilled worker visa you can apply for a permanent residency, then citizenship. I'm an American who got out, I feel sad and guilty thinking of all of you. ❤️

I’ve been living in Japan for almost 20 years now and my Japanese is pretty terrible embarrassingly. But I haven’t had much trouble with anything really. If you have any questions about anything I will help.
Sabertron14
Honestly asking; how's the work life over there? I've seen content of people who go there to live and work but there seems to be some common issues.
cryogenicallyfrozenlovedoctor
It varies from the type of job and company. Most teaching jobs are fairly easygoing. But office workers and similar jobs can sometimes have some toxic environments. Though, there has been a HUGE push in recent years to strongly curb workplace discrimination and harassment. Companies and bosses are terrified to be hit with power harassment or similar charges by employees. Especially if it goes public. Some of these companies are labeled as “black companies” and lose customers and staff.

Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark are good options if you only speak English, since practically everyone in these countries speaks English. If you have any skills at all, there's a shortage of employees in almost any profession you can imagine, at least in Finland. Also studying here is stupidly cheap compared to murica, even for non-EU citizen.
JustAnotherRabidToaster
I am of Danish ancestry. I recently (December of 2024) contacted the Danish embassy about getting asylum, and even despite having extensive skills in science and IT, I was told, in effect, "good luck"
mormacil
Without being on the skilled migrant list of the EU you won't get into an EU country. The EU is first and foremost a protectionist entity and keeping out cheap labor is a key pillar of that. Might not be fair but Americans can't just migrate unless their skills are on a specific list.
CoinedWatcher
It's also just an ease thing for the companies. The paperwork for someone from another EU country is much simpler and cheaper than trying to get someone from the outside.
eggmuffin
You'll be wanting to apply for political asylum, @OP. Most nations have not yet categorized the US as a nation from which they will process asylum requests, but that is in the works.
You'll likely need to demonstrate that you or your demographic is the target of political or religious persecution. Being present in the nation in question is going to help. Sending you back to an uncertain fate is harder than just dismissing paperwork from halfway across the planet.
eggmuffin
By the way, this would be a good time to remind everyone that 'the Freedom Train' that shuttled political dissidents, Jews, and other targeted demographics out of Nazi Germany began its operations in 1933.
drousnavat
I am currently saving money and working toward moving to Malta. As far as I have been able to find, its the cheapest and best option.
archimboldi
How is this research conducted? I don’t know where to begin
drousnavat
It's surprisingly simple. First you need to find a list of countries that speak Whatever languages you speak. Then go through that list to find somewhere there is geographically acceptable. As in it has the kind of weather and terrain that you like. Then you just check their immigration process. Most countries have entry fees as well as legal fees and you need a lawyer to navigate it. As long as you have a useful skill set or education with no criminal history you should be fine.
archimboldi
I’m looking into Europe. England. My worry is how the political developments might affect it.
whoatherebigfella
Malta seems like a wise choice. It never appeared on my radar when I was planning on getting out. I left January 2024 and never looked back. Good luck to you with your planning.
drousnavat
Its a great choice. English and Maltese are both the most spoken languages so it will be easy to integrate. The cost of living there is low and the money I am saving back will cover the migration fees. Plus, I have a bachelors in English and an associates degree in business management, so finding work should be easy enough. Plus 7 years of experience managing a call center. Also the historical stuff there is awesome for a Renfaire nerd like me. Now, I just gotta not die for 2 years and go.
whoatherebigfella
I’m pulling for you! No matter how upset you are at the US, there will be things you’ll miss. Hopefully the new and improved life you’ll be experiencing will help dry the tears. It’s a big and bold move and some people will even call you crazy for thinking about it. Don’t let them derail your dreams. You’re gonna do great there!

MadamPuddifoot
Ha! I can't afford that. Plus I have two dogs that I cannot leave for any reason. Scary times, friend.
laserfrog
start figuring out how to get to that point. Make a plan and work backward. Do the dogs need vet records and/or would yu be limited to drivable destintions? Okay, then work back from that.

Akurei00
Learning a language, especially if you have no one to speak it with, is a long, difficult process and it still doesn't get you out of the country. Plus, whatever language you choose may not be a country that you end up being able to escape to.

BillHubbard
Application meeting? Please explain? Don't you just have an online request form?
GetInLosersWereGonnaDoScience
I’m not sure how it works when you do it online. We made appointments at our local library, they make sure everything on your application is correct, verify all of your documents you have and make copies, take your picture and send everything in for you.

Yep. We got ours at the Post Office (OK, the ONE post office that had that service near us - not just any Post Office).

I changed my gender marker in the USA on my id. They're denying people who altered their gender markers. There's a slim chance I can change it back, but I havent seen a positive post about my situation.and I would need a judge to sign off on the gender marker change again, I guess you get one freebie.
And i never will change it back. That would be a lie. And I'm tired of fucking lying, I'm happy now.
Thatannoyinggit
I'd lie to get out.

Ok. I guess your situation is much different than the average passport holder. I hope the system works to your advantage one day soon.
kitenkatt
Plus, if i ended up in mexico on the pacific, it's good living for me as Americans tip the bartenders. It is a tourist spot. And a short walk to Nicaragua where Iused to know someone. Belize is an option where I have someone, but i believe that's an American territory which is iffy

rooik14
Refugees exist, and they're not morally depraved. Seeking help because you're not someone suited to a combat environment is the best thing to do for many.
barnsandnobel
Dig deep, bear down.
rooik14
Nah, I'm not a combatant. First sign Trump's getting his way with targeting people like me, I'm out of here and to a reasonable country.
barnsandnobel
Why would you need to be in combat? You could learn to do many other things that would help the people around you. Or you can just abandon everyone that can't leave to their fates cause as long as you get yours, eh?
rooik14
Staying would put me in combat, in fact I'm in a handful of groups that'd get killed by the regime first. Not everyone is suited to the soldier's life, those who can withstand the soldier's life will stay, others will make their way to the border as refugees. Refugees aren't somehow morally deficient or greedy, they simply make the best choice depending on their situation.
LincLoud
I have tried for a while. Unless you're willing to get taken advantage of, it's not likely to happen. My future plans are now suicide.

I don't care about if I matter. I have been handling things better and improving myself but I cannot see the point of continuing on when things are falling apart
InconspicuousLampshade

MeatPosicleIsDead
We're all scared, now we need to quit hiding in our foxholes and go protest tomorrow.
Tarrybelle
Protesting will do little to nothing. What needs to happen is the individual states need to take a stand against the government somehow, and unfortunately, the courts are almost useless now. Authoritarian restraints are moving fast enough in that a civil war or plain surrender and acceptance are the only real options left. I am not a violent person and I hate war, but it is different if you need to fight for your basic human rights and freedom. I came from what was an Authoritarian country.

If you are of Irish decent there is a chance you might get Irish citizenship.
Adderkleet2
Unless it's very recent decent (parent or living grandparent with citizenship) you can't get Irish citizenship when born abroad. You can migrate here with the right visa, of course.
mormacil
Ireland has limited the influx of that. Italy on the other hand still has a very generous system however it's absolutelyt clogged and requires a 500,- fee.

Please don't come here. Ireland has a huge housing crisis. None of us can afford homes and a lot of us can't even afford rent. It's bad trying to live here too.

You can even have an American and Irish passport. Remember though, you can be an American and live in Ireland or any other foreign country. You don’t have to become a citizen of a foreign land to live there.
catsofat
This makes no sense. You can't just move to other countries, you need income from a legal job. And American education isn't high up on the desirability scale on applications tbh.
whoatherebigfella
True but that depends on your age. One can easily retire somewhere else living solely on their social security. If you have a 401k or pension, that sweetens the deal. I know you’re down on the US but don’t think for a moment t that a IS college degree is worthless. There really is a happy medium that can be found with just a couple / few month of investigating. There are some countries that don’t allow foreigners to work there regardless of your visa status but certainly not all. Check it out!
catsofat
If you plan to retire elsewhere, but leave your 401k in the US, you really haven't left/aren't safer. Just a side note.
TomahawkJackson
If you have to "look into it" you are not Irish AF.
Because if you had a Parent who was born in Ireland, you'd know.
If you had a Grandparent who was born in Ireland, you'd know.
Your great-great-great-great-grandfather who escaped the Potato Famine in 1845 does not make you "Irish AF".
[deleted]
[deleted]
msui34
And yes, you meet the standard. You are “Irish AF” according to IRELAND.
TomahawkJackson
Fair enough, but you do have to admit that you are BY FAR the hugely hugest 'ok, but the odds of being killed by a flying mattress are never ZERO' edge of an edge of an edge case considering the *typical* "I'm Irish AF-style" American who would say something like that, right?
msui34
It’s the actual regulatory standard of Ireland. I’m pretty sure Ireland is allowed to gatekeep who is Irish by law and can meet their standard for citizenship.
pizzapartyhard
“Full-blooded” meaning what? All your parents and grandparents were descended from people who lived in Ireland?
I think their point is the generational gaps need to be one or two generations since you had abeelative who was a native born Irishman. It’s not about being gatekeepy about what counts as “Irish.” Americans mean something very different (lineage) from Europeans (nationality) when they claim to be Irish/French/German/whatever. And a European government will determine if you qualify.
NotaCPA
Sorry, bud, leaving the country was a 2 year ago thing...when Trump announced it. Besides that, you can be what Americans call an "illegal immigrant" by being a political asylum seeker. But you have to have proof your government is doing something to target you or people like you in dangerous ways etc, etc etc, to do you bodily harm or cause death.
whoatherebigfella
And at this time, @op only has fear to show which won’t get them any help from anywhere.
NotaCPA
like I said, bring proof. If @OP was part of the media and openly tweeted about and receiving death threats...easy. Be part of the government, called a liar etc, fired, black listed...a bit harder. Just being a beige person who lives in a primarily beige community of Trump supporters who are still ignorant to what is going on....no dice.
whoatherebigfella
Sounds to me like they’re not going anywhere according to your timeline. The chain of things you’ve outlined would take a long time to gather.
NotaCPA
well, there were plenty of people at the US border that had their stuff documented and travelled 2k miles to get there. Guess asking them to try is too much?
whoatherebigfella
I wouldn’t discourage anyone from getting out. I left in January 2024. One thing though, someone might find it easier to get into the US than into many other countries. Just my thoughts.
Hyzenthlay021
Good luck with this. I've made this argument ad infinitum, and got shot down every time.
Totters
Does being trans count with the contextual information that in WW2, we were a targeted minority...
Tarrybelle
I would say that the denying of a passport only on the grounds of being Trans is something that would count as a targeted minority. If you are Trans then I would talk to the Canadian or any other embassy or consulate and ask questions about asylum. It might not be possible, but you need to ask anyone and everyone and keep following up. None of this is easy, but I would say that being Trans in America right now is highly dangerous. Best of luck.
Psionickitten
When it gets worse, since countries exist that aren't as fucking shitty as America, I can totally see countries absolutely giving no questions asked asylum. Countries have done it in the past and hell, America even did it in the past (the North even did it for slaves during the civil war). But you're right. If you wanted to avoid all this ahead of time, it would have been better to do it earlier than now.
NotaCPA
you mean like the way they rejected jewish immigrants during WW2....There is a window of opportunity when it comes to immigration. 1st window...you have money and marketable skills and are considered an economic immigrant. 2. You become a targeted class by your government. early WW2 jews are a good example. 3. Once conflict happens there is an extremely short window to leave...if you're of military age and male especially. this has been since in all conflicts to date. West, East, Africa. Europe.

It's amazing how the rest of the world keeps being surprised by things like JD Vance showing up in Munich and saying the exact same fucking shit he's been saying for years to anybody who would listen.
I've been dreaming of asylum for a while, but I worry it's going to take far, far too long for the rest of the world to get the memo. They've been coasting on toxic optimism and exported American Exceptionalism for so long that they don't know how to sober up and metabolize reality.
randomdudefromtheinternet
Uhm, German here and i assure you noone here was fucking surprised as we all clearly see the shitshow happening and also Trump during his first term. No clue where you got that idea honestly.
Koldfront
Blaming the rest of the world for not being your personal safety net after you elected a fascist government, is a hell of a take.
ventikona
I think you’re underestimating the rest of the world. The rest of the world was surprised that you guys elected Trump the first time, and then you put him in the Oval Office instead of jail. We have been alarmed, but not surprised about the fallout.

Why can't we leave the country?
nasukkin
Well, for starters, Uncle Sam keeps as much of your stuff as possible when you leave. If you don't have an emigration lawyer lined up today, you WILL be leaving behind essentially all of your money and material possessions.
cercle
? I just hired a shipping company. Pro tip: boat is fine, air isn't worth the cost. Not like I had any money anyway
nasukkin
If you are smuggling belongings out of the nation undeclared, I would not be posting about it online like that.

Not sure how many countries are accepting American immigrants. Every country is different so it will take a lot of research. The immigration process can also take a long time and may have many conditions, like learning the language of that country before moving there. Now if you're fleeing from inhumane prosecution you can get political asylum, which is a whole different story with plenty of caveats.
TomahawkJackson
You can, but if you were going to, you should have been planning to be gone now, starting 2 years ago. Emigrating is not something you do with a passport, a credit card and a plane ticket.

So... we don't have to be illegal immigrants or asylum seekers? I'm just trying to figure out what the first user is talking about
NotaCPA
This is a political joke. Republicans tried really hard to classify asylum seekers as illegal immigrants for the last decade. There was a point in time a lot of uninformed citizens really thought that was how it worked and didn't realize that as Nato member the USA was required to take all asylum seekers. That confusion allowed guys like Trump to make idiotic, unchallenged claims like "Mexico is not sending their best." In Reality, most asylum seekers present at the airport not land crossings.
TomahawkJackson
I have no clue. I think they wanted to get that clever "come be an illegal immigrant LOLOLOL" thing in. You need to have some kind of renewable visa from a country that is offering some kind of visa that you would qualify for. i.e. There are at least 32 countries that offer some sort of Retirement Visa (or passive income) with income requirements from 500 to 4350/mo in "unearned" income.
Some have "Digital Nomad" visas, etc.
NotaCPA
Yeah, I was being clever. The American right-wing political system tried really hard to label asylum seekers as illegal immigrants, which was WRONG! immigrating to most NATO countries usually starts by making an application from your own country. Provide the documentation of what is happening to you. Right now, I think the Trans community in the States would qualify. Actively blocked passport renewals, DEI removal means targeted bullying is now legal but your personal experience may differ 2.

Most countries won't take someone without exceptional skills or a huge amount of money. I think the first user is just overreacting because there has been an uptick in these posts where Americans think that they can immigrate wherever they want just because they're American. Also it can take years to get all the paperwork together and to get approved for a visa.
InTangier
The US is a hard country to immigrate to. Sadly, that usually results in countries doing the same to US citizens. The EU does have some frameworks for asylum seekers though, there's that.
