#4 I used footnotes to put the Troy Story joke in one of my college essays.
Didn't lose points for it either.

#1 If I wanted to hang up a scientifically accurate octopus skeleton it would just be a fucking beak.
middlenameconfusion
Yes officer, I need to legally source 450 finger bones for my Halloween decorations.
FiftyShadesOfTiramisu
#3 Sounds like a regular '80s kid to me. Aside from bicycle accidents & faling out of trees, I broke a finger in a door and a toe when a bar on a playground came loose. My early panic attacks were misdiagnosed as asthma and I was pumped full of corticosteroids. I almost died when my appendix ruptured after a pediatrician misdiagnosed my appendicitis as a case of bad gas. When I recovered in the hospital, a nurse ripped the window wide open in the middle of December and I caught a pleurisy. Etc.

#11 Wait, THREE sisters? I know about Kelly, but where did the other two come from?
SuchACatastrophe
Skipper and Stacie are the other two. I had dolls of all 3 younger sisters back in the 90s. Kelly is also now Chelsea for some reason. Skipper dates back to the 60s, Stacie was added in 1990.
CarInAVet
Man, I was a Barbie-obsessed 90s kid and somehow I never heard of them.

#1 ah. To critique this is ok. But when my autistic ass complains about the tails of ANY furry art being orthogonally attached to the spine at the height of the navel noooooo you won't hear it
ItHappenedInThe20thCentury
nuh-uh-uh, I'll hear it alright! Please do comment on this every time you see it. Don't be a jerk, of course, but how else are people going to correct it if it's not pointed out?
NotMuchMoneyInItThough365
Honestly, how would they correct it?
ItHappenedInThe20thCentury
By making suits where the tail is attached elsewhere and differently! "But how?", you may ask. Well that's a problem for the creators, we can only provide the environmental pressure.
Navrodel
#22 - Fortunately a lot of that IS actually getting answered. Unfortunately, it's not what a lot of "autism" charities are focused on because things like "Autism Speaks" are more accurately advocacy groups for parents of children with high support needs, and thus more focused on how inconvenient neurodiversity is for everyone else than actually helping the autistic.
As for the answers that I came across to this (on facebook, so have a grain of salt):
ItHappenedInThe20thCentury
Fascinating last point, because building from the bottom-up is basically what we learn in counterpoint and in a good part of voice-leading and harmony, and a lot in writing rhythm too. Granted, "top-down" processing is right there with standard forms (sonata, minuet, rondo...), but if you've taken composition classes you've seen how these more often than not are flexible guidelines with some important landmarks, and not a strict structure. The overall form emerges from the details. ./..
ItHappenedInThe20thCentury
So that's the "typical" in classical music [I'm simplifying ofc], and it was only in the second half of the 20th century that someone like Xenakis came along and said "buf what it we DID start with the overall form and THEN worked the details out so that this exact form is heard?", and a lot of people Did Not Care For It - Boulez chief amongst them, one of the most bottom-up guys you can find.

Any respectable scientist/engineer/technician will admit that there probably isn't an irritable spirit living in the printer, but the evidence that there ISN'T an irritable spirit isn't as solid as they would like.

First series this made me think of. But they've filmed so many shows in that same area! There's one specific bridge in a park that I've seen in Fringe, the X-Files, and Supernatural.

AgentTasmania
One must ask: are these modern series actually doing anything more with the absurd budgets or is it just about the greatest possible amount vanishing untaxed?
ps238principal
Not to mention that they filmed in a part of Canada that had access to basically every biome. So you got forests, dunes, seashore, etc.
Just no weird alien plants, animals, sky colors, etc. unless it was plot relevant. And since the System Lords were making colonies of enslaved humans, the planets pretty much had to be earth like.
Subtilico

Its location must make it really expensive, because only nature documentaries have been filmed there, which is a shame. You'd think at least one sci-fi movie would've used it by now.

I am a bisexual man who was hyped for SFA and the Gay Klingon. Till I saw the first episode and dude was more of a cartoon than Will Graces gay mafia episode. Show was a trashfire

Never watched it. Currently on my first in order watchthrough of DS9, next up is Lower Decks.

#8 As much as I adore John Williams, this misconstrues his talent. Sit down and listen to Holst -- especially the Planets suite, but not *just* the Planets. And then listen to other classic composers, like Wagner and Stravinsky...
Williams learned from those who came before him, and did a wonderful job applying it to his own work. And he's bound to be inspiring others, including talents that will outshine his. And that's more awesome than one crazy talented guy, I think.
hujaz
Thiiis. You can catch both Duel of the Fates AND Jaws in Dvorak's 9th alone
ItHappenedInThe20thCentury
If you're looking for an absolute genius with less direct quotes (if any...), might I recommend Ennio Morricone. Holy shit the guy was good.
Williams deserves all the praise he gets, no doubt, but... imho there is a BIG difference.

#10 For a long time, Miasma Theory competed with Spore Theory, which was actually a lot closer to Germ Theory. But because some influential people preferred Miasma Theory, that won out until Spore Theory became Germ Theory and came back with a steel chair.

#9 So, 2019. During his first term. Before Biden replaced him, and the Biden administration had 4 YEARS to do literally anything. FOUR FUCKING YEARS!!! Justice is not that slow, not when it comes to any normal human. If it existed at all, Trump would have been in prison by 2024. These complicit fucks deserve to be suffering the consequences, not any of us!

#17 None of these assholes actually read the book they pound.
whereismymind86
Of course not, Christians who’ve actually read the Bible tend to call themselves atheists afterwards
ToSisPoS
They don’t even read the Constitution they just point at it and say “gun for us and we should get to say the N-word!”
VikingsAreNinjaPirates
I saw a bumper sticker that said, "2nd Amendment: Est. 1776" with a pic of an AR-15. It was written in 1789. Willfully ignorant fuckers.

It is their holy symbol
JBloodthorn
Reading is widely known to cause thinking. Very much frowned upon in those circles. Could lose a person a lot of face.
TheBlueMuppet
That's the least horny sentence i've ever seen with the words "assholes" and "pound".

but the men of Sodom did want to "know" the angels (Genesis 19), and Lot offered them his daughters "to do as they please" (how nice) and they refused the deal
https://esv.org/Genesis+19/
69thStPepper
Seriously, they spend an entire verse on how these evil towns refused to feed and shelter travelers, and God says directly how he's killing them for abusing guests, and spares the one family who respects guests, and the interpretation is that God hates buttsex?
FckleberryFarms
If you watch people who are actual biblical scholars, including ones who used to be evangelical lunatics like Bart Ehrman, it's so much worse. Thousands of years of the telephone game, across languages, with incomplete texts and fuck tons of copy errors. Yet some of them (zealots) actually believe the text is inerrant which is utterly insane. I can recommend Bart. He has told his story of eventually getting out of the parochial pit his beliefs/views put him in. He's on YT.
JustinArnold
My ma had that 'the book is inerrant' crap in her head. I asked her why so many different versions of it existed, then. If it had never been misinterpreted or misrepresented, there would only be one, divinely enforced, version.
ToSisPoS
I can’t imagine what it’s gonna be like 2000 years from now when they go to holy war over “Who was right: Iron Man or Captain America?” and treating the Snap like the biblical flood.
supertigerlamp
"Despicable acts before me" allows them to imagine that as whatever they want it to be. Gay marriage/sex, mixing Energizer and Duracell batteries in the same appliance, picking Kaiden over Ashley in [REDACTED], wearing puffy director's pants, or NOT wearing puffy director's pants.
ToSisPoS
Are you telling me that they let the cats and dogs marry each other too?
supertigerlamp

Instead you got a Star Wars ad.

#22 more and more research suggests the gut is the second brain I wonder if that’s why so many neurodivergent folks have issues
Kbantar
An anti anxiety medication fixed my gut issues. It makes sense as most of the body's serotonin is in the digestive system not the brain. So neurotransmitter disorders would often lead to gut problems. But I don't get how it would cause other things like immune system gut problems or specific things like lactose intolerance.
RocketKokket
That’s really cool ! I should look into that with my doctor
Kbantar
Good luck, and I truly mean that.

#12 The most interesting part of this video is the Yoda fountain at the beginning, and it's not even shown properly.

It struck me as some boring ass merch store at the airport.

#2 that goes harder than it has any right to go
Kbantar
I agree. Anyone terrified of a tv show even a poorly written one is quite pathetic. Don't like it; don't watch it and just walk away.

I will forever remember how I loved Space: 1999 in my youth. Even my family lightly mocked me for it. I can never throw stones. lol

#5 I recognize some of these characters but can't remember why or from what. Anyone else know what this is from?
darthinebriated
Its Discworld, specifically the Watch. Nobby, Detritus, Colon, Vimes, Carrot, Anguia, Cheery Littlebottom and the rest.
Ilovehavingfreehealthcare
Ah, it's been a long time since reading some of that. Thank you
