every lara croft game is trying to crowd fund to sell some shitty ass bag for an insane price like its an indie dev right now

The guys who made PalWorld and Zeekers (Lethal Company) made millions and are basically set for life at this point.

Very much an exception to the rule. Most games fail, that's how it's always been, and this year has been a catastrophic year for studios big and small. It will get even worse.

Sick of most of gaming industry these years

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just started work on what will hopefully be my first commercial product as an indie dev.

I do not expect to quit my day job.

Good luck! If you ever need any help or need to ask me something, feel free to hit me up :) .. I will try to help when I can!

Meanwhile, at Arrowhead Studios: "QUICK! HIRE MORE PEOPLE TO HOLD OUR TROUSERS UP! WE'VE MADE ANOTHER MILLION OVERNIGHT!"
"I'M TRYING TO SPEND ALL MINE ON SERVERS, BUT I CAN'T BUY THEM FAST ENOUGH!"
"Oh yeah, that reminds me, I had to explain to Cloudflare that we're not getting DDOS'd, again. Next time you're doing it."

The "fridge is too full" kind of problem to have.

*Balatro dev spreading avocado on their toast*

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sigh it is so true. I miss working in games. The people are so passionate about what they make.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Non-indie devs get turbo fucked on the regular too. Blizzard Entertainment employees report not being able to afford meals in the company cafeteria, and purposefully using the provided free coffee as an appetite suppressant.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Totally. It's very sad! I know a case where they worked like INSANE amount of hours for an AAA company and even the wage was not that great... very sad.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

and the saddest thing is these are well known companies. Companies you would think they treat their employees fair but it's the other way around.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And wait until you hear the complaints from the female employees.

Fake news

Sony made 6% profit in the Christmas quarter? If I said you’d make 6 cents on every dollar of goods you sell most people wouldn’t even bother.

Big "why are you running for president? - because it's faster than walking for president" vibes here

Twas like this over 20 years ago. It ain't gonna change.

This is why I don't care if indie developers push their games at the end of posts on Imgur.
Or even use the post to promote it! Support your indie developers! People scream "Ad!!" like it's f'in EA promoting Madden 24.

2 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 3

EA were great to me when I worked for them, however, this was like 1999. A whole pizza each, daily, beer on Fridays and we played tons of Quake 3 over LAN, it was so good

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think those were the good old EA days until greed took over .. happens with a lot of companies unfortunately and it's sad :(

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thank you for your support <3 Comments like these really means so much to small indie developers like us :)

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Hey wait! I remember you! You did the Voidness! The comment I use from Spock about indie devs being allowed to promote their games on Imgur was actually in one of your posts for that game!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey yeah haha that's me! Thank you so much man <3 I get why some people get angry because they hate ads (who doesn't) but most indie devs like myself genuinely want to share their work they happily worked on and don't have the high budget $$$ for ads, because ads are not cheap at all

I really enjoy seeing others creative work here and I don't mind because in the end I am discovering new things, and if I don't like it I just carry on about. There is always a limit tho. Thanks again dude!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Eh… I’m fine with somebody that is genuinely showing off their project (especially on Imgur’s “show us what you make” events and the like), but when the account name is the game title, and they have no posts or comments except ads, I get annoyed.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

There's showing art, and there's selling a product. The moment there's a link or a name listed by the OP, it's downvoted and reported as spam.

Nobody here should be submitting to advertisements because it's the little guy cramming them in your face.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Report it as spam all you want, but it's not a violation of the community rules, and is encouraged by Imgur. But, don't take my word for it, take Imgur's: /gallery/Vujvw2M/comment/2315054001/1

I love when people snow off their stuff on here, will have to show mine when it's finished

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Graphics so realistic tho!!!!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I KNOW! And look here! That pirate ship is so PiRaTeY! I befriended a parrot and got scurvy.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

AAA devs? Or Indie? Either way, I don't play video games for the graphics. I'll watch a Micheal bay movie if I want graphics with narrow thin plots.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

If you want "graphics" and "thin plots", I've got a couple doujins I could recommend.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'll never say no to a good thin plotted large graphiced doujin

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And those devs work their asses off. I was in the industry for a short time and learned that sleeping under desks is not unheard of in game studios.

2 years ago | Likes 203 Dislikes 1

Totally agree. Some of them are very over worked and some of them really need more praise for all the work the have done! I heard some stories about LOOOOONG hours they work for an AAA-company and the pay was not even that great :/

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I would highly recommend to watch a video The Engoodening of No Man's Sky, they went through shit and back.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Be wary of the studios that cater meals. It means they expect you to never leave.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

My college and university taught us to do it, and encouraged it, stating it is expected of us.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sleeping under desks. Heavy drinking. Mismanaged projects. People who don't bathe. Insane pressure from above to mtx. List goes on

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Their cubicle/apartment rent is calculated out of their base pay (big slash-s on this, I'm not at all being serious as I'm not in that industry but also wouldn't be surprised if they actually would do that.)

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I worked at my professional studios (EA, Rockstar, etc) in management. We calculate “total cost” of an employee. Salary+bonus+equipment+rent+utilities etc when budgeting (I was responsible for dev teams on several AAA games)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Many not my

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Every industry will abuse rhere employees if we let them. People need to not tolerate this bullshit anymore. The government needs to better protect employees from this.

2 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 2

According to a lot of people that would be socialism

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree that this is something that needs to stop but it's more built in the culture (rather than enforced) than it seems. Supergiant Games (Hades, Bastion, etc) talked about how they had to force employees to spend their paid leaves or else people wouldn't, because they felt like they were letting down their team if so. I recommand listening to the documentary they made about Hades production, it's very interesting

Got a link?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly, I just hope all the big AAA Game Studios will die soon, the way they get outclassed by Indie Studios who focus on making good games.

2 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 9

I highly recommend Holocure, it's free on Steam and my fave game right now

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Wait until you find out that vampire survivors is like the same thing but with more content

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Holocure has much better controls IMO, and seems to have more content than I could possibly use. I'd rate it way above vampire survivors but I respect your opinion

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

you can just say you're in it for the anime girls

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm... Not though? There's plenty of other games with anime girls. They're not particularly hot in Holocure. It's a genuinely great game, I was just reccomending it

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

They won’t because the normies outweigh the indie game steam crowd

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I have several friends in the game industry, from what the director of one local studio tells me, you’re likely to get your wish in 2024, unfortunately the same is true for the smaller studios as well. It’s gonna be an crappy year to be a game dev.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Doubt it. I've got some friends in the game industry as well and while things don't look great for developers in general, the studios are chugging along just fine. AAA studios come and go but as a whole, they're here to stay.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I love plenty of indie games but it's disingenuous to turn a blind eye to the absolute mountains of absolute garbage that comes out of the indie sphere.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

90% of it winds up on imgur. Oh look, another generic unity asset amalgam!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Then indie devs become triple a and the cycle continues.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I hope studios like Larian become the role model for game developers going on, staying independent and making their games with crowdfunding, and not by signing their soul over to some suits...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well 'become' - more like 'get EATEN ALIVE AND HOLLOWED OUT by some publisher'

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yes

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s a free choice to align with a publisher.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It’s a number game. Every day there are 50 games released per day. PER DAY. and in those 14000 games the occasional gem pops up.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

This math seems a little off.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Games usually do not get released on non-working days.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TIL- There are 280 days in a year.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

How many working days are in your average year, wise guy? Games don’t get released on non-working days. I was hoping people here would possess the necessary transfer function to deduce this and they didn’t need to be spoonfed. My bad.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are >260< working days in a year, without deducting holidays... If, in protest of simple jokes, you're going to pitch a fit over how super correct your math was, it would help if it was actually correct.
