If a teacher strays from that curriculum they can be fired. Learning fractions are the same as divsion made a differance. The only class I ever failed was business cal. The teacher was hard to understand and would be voilently upset if you asked a question. The next business calc teacher taught calc III, aced his class, he knew the shortcuts
Small magnets for kids is a terrible idea. Just asking for a trip to the emergency room. The book needs to be magnetized and the fraction pieces be just metal.

Darts gets you very good at doing simple arithmetic while drinking beer. But if I've got a linear algebra 4x4 matrix multiplication I'm gonna get me a pencil and paper... or Mathematica or Wolfram Alpha.
When I taught and even in my current job, I always want people to show their work so that I can give them some credit as opposed to no credit. If I can't see where you went wrong and there's a wrong answer then I can't justify giving you points.
You show the work so you can prove you know how to do it.
I had a chemistry teacher that said the final numerical answer was only worth 5 points... the 95 points were showing the work....
He said, you can get an A in my class if you don't have a calculator.... just identify the values you would have come up with and carry them to the next formula.

It's only hard to learn fractions because it's hard to visualize them. Once you can visualize that ยฝ is just ยผ+ยผ, it's easy to understand how to add ยผ+ยฝ to get ยพ, because you can visualize how they relate and convert.

You aren't learning fractions in vaccum, it is a building block for years and years of primary school math. 1/4 + 1/2 = 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4 (convert to the same base then add).

Your reasoning is backwards. It is like saying "Why is 1 Euro a thing when it just means 1,17 dollar?". You're starting of with your weird unit, which then makes the sane unit broken. Start with a clear number and then make it into fractions and the fraction seems silly. It still always does, but even more so.
It's not backwards, fractions are incredibly useful in math, especially calculus and algebra because you have to keep exact values, rounding will mess up formulas. Only once you get to the final answer do you round, intermediate rounding steps will throw you off.
Now multiply by 5, it's 147/25. Divide that by 3 and you have 49/25. Divide that by 12 and it's 49/300. This is why fractions are used in algebra and calculus, they are easier to play around with, especially in formulas.
It depends a lot in the context, and what you're doing. Exact stuff such as calculus and pure abstract math? Yes. Measuring things? Yeah you're NEVER gonna have an exact fraction there. Never. So it's pointless to use fractions for that if your argument is that they're useful in formulas requiring total precision. Just use decimals since the number is not exact to begin with.

Anything under an inch I use metric these days. Especially since I do 3d printing and such so everything is in mm already.

Fractions have uses outside of tools. Representing something as 6/13 is easier than .46153846. it's also used in algebra and calculus.
