Halloumi is a semi-hard, unripened cheese made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk. Originated from Cyprus. It has a high melting point so it can easily be fried or grilled. It tastes best right out of the pan when it's still hot. It's squeaky cheese. If you let it sit out it hardens.

Halloumi is the easiest thing to make. Just cut it up and place it on a grill or sear it for 3 minutes on medium heat, or once the bottom starts to brown. Flip it and cook for another 2 minutes and you're done. The halloumi itself is pretty salty so you don't need to season it.

I made a lil salad with some things I found in the fridge. I added the halloumi with some tomatoes, pepper, nectarine, basil, mint, salt, pepper, lemon, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Cucumber would be good too... unfortunately my cucumber was squishy so I had to toss it.

It's a nice fresh summer salad if you're not looking for something too heavy. Plus you can add whatever.

I found out you can share folders. Anyways here's more food I've made if anyone's hungry: https://imgur.com/user/ItsMoni/favorites/folder/10434992/food-ive-made

That looks frikken delicious OP. Grilled Halloumi is transcendent. It’s the bacon of cheese.

They didn’t have to completely drown it in dressing though

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This guy knows what he is talking about.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you marinate the halloumi in lemon and honey for a few hours first and add the marinade into the pan when you fry the halloumi, so good

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Way I do it is to get herb marinated halloumi already, fry it up and put it aside. The three TBSP of olive oil and a heap of diced garlic

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sauté the garlic until it’s nice and brown and then give the halloumi a quick flip in the pan with it and plate. So, fucking, good.

Just came from Cyprus yesterday. That place is fantastic....the food is amazing.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also, in Larnaca airport, I went for a bite in BK before boarding. They have a haloumi whooper!!!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Halloumiiiiiiii no one seems to know this cheese in the USA

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's not grilled. That's fried.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Squeeeke...,squeeksqueeksqueek........squeek

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's a lot of acidic foods/ingredients

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ahh, a fried cheese amalgamation

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

halloumi is non-bacon bacon

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Trust me on this one - grill those peppers. Seriously. Do it, then come back here and thank me afterwards.

Where is the grill I see a fry?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We call this squeaky cheese!!

5 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

After the way it tastes ofcourse

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yes, the bastard child of cheese and rubber boots.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I was disappointed with this cheese. Loved the idea that you can brown/grill it, but has very little flavor and the texture is very rubbery.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MORE CHEESE!!!!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

WHY DOES HALLOUMI ALWAYS HAS THAT CRACK IN THE MIDDLE?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Halloumi! With! honey!! That is all.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It squeaks when you chew it. It’s bloody good. UK Burger King makes a halloumi with bacon in a bun. ?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That looks great … By the way the song is great also. Reminds me of my favorite movie of all time. “Zorba”.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That movie is great as it teaches you to just enjoy life. Anthony Quinn once said in an interview. “To live life you must love”,

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

he couldnt be more true. You cannot live and enjoy life if you cannot love.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean that's fried, not grilled.

5 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

Technically it's seared, not fried. But "grilled cheese" gets more clicks than "seared cheese".

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 8

Haloumi has so much fat in it there is no need to use any fat to fry it, I always just use a dry pan.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Soon as you fry out the remaining moisture it’s delicious fried cheese time

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mmm one of my favourite times

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

regardless a grilled cheese is not grilled cheese. it's a grilled cheese sandwich. as in a cheese sandwhich which has been grilled.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Favourited to remind me to make it in 12-18 months when I find it again in my favourites

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Squeaky Cheese!!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your supposed to unfold the cheese, stops you getting that big crack in each slice.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How does one unfold a semi-hard cheese? Bending it just makes it crack.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It has a pretty clear fold within it you open it up which breaks it in two pieces. If you look at the slices they all have a crack.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So you want to break it apart instead of folding it open?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's hard to explain without a halloumi and you Infront of me.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What does unfold the cheese mean? v

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

When I saw this episode I had to pause it because I was laughing so much! LOVE Schitts Creek!

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh no - a crack in the food I am going to cut up, put into my mouth, and chew until it is a wet mushy slurry I can swallow?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Forget all that other crap just pass be the crispy cheese.

5 years ago | Likes 326 Dislikes 7

Easy there Monterey Jack.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Try saganaki from Greece. Like Haloumi but you often drizzle honey, lemon and even ouzo on it. It's unreal.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think you’ll find that’s called squeaky cheese

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

* praise be, the crispy cheese.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

squeeze of lemon is needed though.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's more squeaky than crispy in my own experience

5 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Well then we’ll stab it with our steely knives.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You know what they say, "the squeaky cheese gets the oil"

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Depends. If you eat it directly out of the pan after you fried it to golden brown, it's crispy. Put it in a sauce and it becomes squeaky.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I've eaten it straight out the pan and it's still squeaky. I've never had it in a sauce

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hmm. I do actually rest it on some kitchen towels after frying. Maybe that helps draw some extra moisture out.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No idea. Might give it a try but any time I've had it it's like very very tasty polystyrene

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm with fragarach

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No oil just nonstick pan fry both sides. Not too thick. It will squeek and crunch. Eat it with other things to not be overwhelmed.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've eaten it many times, in a number of different ways but thanks for the advice.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He's just big bristled

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ha!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just a massive fan of cheese.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Same here. Also a massive fan of vegetables. I'd take the cheese on the side. To mix flavours I'd eat a bit of each together

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That sounds delicious. Is that cheese sold in the US?

5 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 1

Yes! I bought it from the international store but I've seen it at regular grocery stores as well next to cheeses like mozzarella balls.

5 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

Is that real (PDO) halloumi from Cyprus? Or an American version?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It says product of Cyprus on the box. https://www.kraimpco.com/

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cool! Wasn't sure if it would be exported all the way to US!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you've got any middle eastern grocery store, they'll have it for sure

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My local Costco stocks it

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Depending on your store, you might be able to find it in the same area they stock blue cheese and feta.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Cut it into sticks, bread and fry them like mozzarella sticks. They work with egg/seasoned flour shallow fried as well. To die for.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Halloumi fries is actually 'trendy' right now in the UK.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is where I am and have eaten plenty of them!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yes you can, called grilling cheese at safeway.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Cypriot cheese. Amazing when heated

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yes usually too expensive, you can get panela or queso fresco (mexican cheeses) and fry them cheap, same thing

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

...yes...

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aldi has it

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I was just about to post that. ?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dot.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everytime I go to Aldi, I get this cheese

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get it at any store in Canada

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Hi fellow Canadian, I just came here to say this

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hello!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Every store in canada sells cheese?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Haha well every grocery store and maybe convenience stores. Won't find it at Canadian Tire

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's very similar to the "squish squish" cheese Canadians use for their poutines if that can help

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Curd? Not really, as that melts just by pouring hot gravy on it while halloumi doesn't melt easily at all. You could never make poutine /1

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

with halloumi and you couldn't fry curd as in this recipe. /2

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes but depending where you like it can be quite expensive, like for me that would be like 30$ for that much

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Wtf, that's a $3 piece.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Wow that's steep. I'd expect around 4-5€, a bit more if bio

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sadly I discovered this cheese on sale, had a taste, and now I just look longingly at the price and cry inside

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Move to the middle east, it's everywhere here. 3 bucks a pound

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My usual takeaway food is a halloumi pita wrap. Fried halloumi, good load of salad, chili+garlic+yoghurt sauces. It's amazing
