Another reason this has happened: Zionists started calling anti-genocide protesters "antisemites" and cheapened the meaning of the term. I can't help but feel that some of this is because we spent so much time treating Nazi's as a punchline or an example of comedic hyperbole. It made them seem stupid, goofy & diminished the threat they represented. By treating the end result as a joke, we became blind to the first signs because, lol that's just ridiculous. But that is our greatest hubris isn't it? That this time we know better.
