Stories like that give me a lot of hope. We can feel so small and alone as individuals, thinking we have no impact on the world. Then I remember a quote by Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
The problem with that is that if you haven't picked a side in this, you aren't "fighting to make your own life work". You're doing what you can within your oppressors' corrupt system and seeing just enough reward to repeat your Sisyphean task every following day ad nauseum. You're still fighting, yes, but you're only bloodying your fists and exhausting your energy for the sake of status quo. (1/3)
"Fighting to make our own lives work" is standing up and demanding to be treated fairly, and the only way we can get there is by standing together and demanding our neighbours are treated fairly as well. "Fighting to make our own lives work" is learning about and dismantling the injustices facing your surrounding communities. "Fighting to make our own lives work" is deeply DEEPLY unfair, but it's the reality that you, and almost every other person you know has to face. (2/3)
To be absolutely clear though, I'm fucking exhausted too mate. And what I'm preaching is something that I struggle to remember often, and I recognize that very few people have the wherewithal to fight constantly and consistently for their values in an unjust world. I don't show up remotely as often as I feel that I should, and I feel crushed by the world's pressure often, but we can't let that feeling be where it ends. (3/3)

That brought a smile to my face.

As an Irish person and one named Karen at that, I never tire of hearing this story.

Also grapefruit juice is delicious. I would hate to see it gone, but it was for a good cause.

Alas that my grapefruit consumption has been proscribed; ah, life is cruel and antipsychotics are unavoidable

What about being too busy and tired from just trying to make your own life work that you don't choose a side?

No matter the reason, it favours the oppressor.
