They're in the super family Musteloidia. This includes the Mustelids (otters, ferrets, wolverines) Mephitidae (skunks), and procyons (racoons and mine's cats). While they're not like... SUPER non related to Ursidae being both caniforms, they're WAY closer to racoons than to any of the bears. No one's really going to argue that.
But they are the first pandas. The Giant Panda was named in English after the Red Panda. So if anything Giant Panda should have been named after a type of bear.
