Is "kid goes to magic school" a good idea? Debatable. But I think we can all agree she fucked up the execution.
For a trilogy that takes that concept, runs in a very different direction with it, and did an absolute banger job, "A Deadly Education," by Naomi Novik. Imagine being sent to a high school where you're locked in the entire four years, and you have (at best) a 50% chance of living to graduation. And you're desperate to get into this school, because those odds are so much better...

George is never finishing the main series. He has WAAAAAAAY too many characters to keep track of and can't help but add more new characters with each new one. God only knows what new Targs, or Baratheons or FUCKING STARKS we've never heard of will show up when the last two books are released posthumously.

Words are hard, but it's more about the idiotic things he's said than the actual progress. He's said repeatedly he's only working on WoW, then worked on other things, said he was isolating himself to write, then got zero pages in a whole year while working on a bunch of other projects.
Taking a while is one thing. At this point it feels like he knows he can't end the series in a way that pleases enough people so he'd rather just not, but can't admit that either.

To be fair, there were people who criticized "Potter" before Rowling showed her true colors. There are also people who don't like Tolkien's work. Some times the critiques really are about the work. We have the old saying, "You can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all of the time."

My personal favorite is that after witnessing all sorts of corruption, discrimination, and abuse at all levels of the magical society (not just from the main antagonist), the epilogue is nothing really changes at large and the main character simply becomes a cop in said society..

For me it's more about "I greatly enjoyed reading them as a child and young adult" and JKR being a twat waffle doesn't suddenly make that not true anymore. I know plenty of people who loved the books more than I did and are now all over the internet yelling about how horrible they are just because it's trendy to hate JKR (rightfully so, but it shouldn't change anything about if you liked them as a young adult).

I think it's important to look back and see if old media still holds up, especially when it's something still in popular circulation. People are still giving this to their kids, after all. It's ok to say "I loved this as a kid." It's also ok to say "Wow, this book says some people are natural slaves, what was I thinking?!"

I guess my point is just that any series written for kids is probably going to have some plot holes and stuff so of course it's not going to stand up to higher level scrutiny, it wasn't intended to be LotR level (or at least wasn't marketed as such to me).
