t00tie
So much this! The wipers in the 3 don't fucking work. I also want a goddamn dashboard.
EricPisch
I’ll take a few buttons for the stuff you use all the time please
bingotown
Mid 80s to early 90s cars had the best mix of fun-to-drive without too much electric-crap-that-breaks.
tomatoboy
Agreed. Except for the digital dash designs they tried occasionally with segmental numeric LCD speedometers.
lawideas
I would never want any critical functions run by a touchscreen. I've seen too many touchscreens die.
ozjuggler
In aircraft there's an app for that. :-) Such as in Garmin G-1000 and above, the 2nd screen shows primary instruments if 1st screen dies.
ikagawa
Just modify your car to use the control deck from Steel Battalion!
ufoara
Oh that Startup Sequence.
shepphandler
Having worked on 16s for 8 years it’s cool seeing stuff pop up like this and knowing what most of those buttons and lights are for.
BenSnow97
As someone who never worked on a jet and never will, what's the point of having all those buttons? Do pilots actually use everything there?
ThreeLineRifle
I want this. Kind of have it.
coffeebot9000
AntennaDibb
I just want a self-driving car so I can nap in the car while I go to work.

lokitoki81
DCS World, its free, and all you need
tomyironmane
I just want gauges i dont have to take my eyes of the idiots around me to see.
But no, they tape a fucking iPad to the center console with no analog backups. Fuck that shit, Elon. Get your engineers off the ganja.
I don't even like the faux analog gauges GM uses.
Have you tried test driving one? It's one of those things that feel stupid until you experience it
opkraut
It's still stupid and goes against common sense. Use a fucking HUD like GM has had since 1988 at the very least. Bad design is inexcusable
That is is where the radio normally is, and I don't look there because it's too far off the road.
greggbert
What I want is a human driver that is also a bodyguard and dog trainer and will teach me Mandarin Chinese on the way to work.
ilikepot8os
I hate having to take my eyes off the road to adjust the volume, heat, or fan. Used to be able to do it by touch.
TrashPacker
Turn on auto pilot. With that being said, i have memorized it and no longer an issue
ChlebaNamazanejHovnem
or windshield wipers, fucking windshield wipers!
stillcynical
Hell, in that Tesla you have to look off to the side just to see the speedometer.
SoftKleenex
Heat and fan I agree. But you have a volume wheel on the steering wheel so that part is fine
BradyThomes
Accurate.
FrankJin
wait until u see f35’s console... looks exactly like a mercedes
EmperorWiggles
Things beautiful and there's more visibility over the console.
morgan0073
Tou need to fill that thing up every 400k. I'm sure the charge time is quite a while.
Tesseract09
About half an hour on the newer 350kw chargers. Charge rate is about 1000km/h
Shit, those batteries must get hot at those charge rates
The coolant lines run in contact with every cell. I don't think they peak at much more than 50degrees
Really that's sweet. I can't wait until we steal the artificial sun from the Chinese so we can have unlimited free power to run these cars.
Actually grid usage has been dropping due to energy efficiency improvements, so there's enough to power cars for everyone, and still some.
Jabardolas

shiftdi3s3l
Physical controls mean less time taking your eyes off the road because you can feel where the buttons are, and it becomes muscle memory.
What if the car keeps its eyes on the road instead?
Then don't bother driving, just take public transportation. It keeps your disastrous ass away from us.
Teslas have half as many accidents as other cars per mile, and the majority of them are Model 3s, but sure, "disastrous"
^ and that's without even counting autopilot, when it's turned on it halves again
JokerVonDoloh
What if you take a public transit? You can even sleep in the seat while it drives around! Woah! You're missing the point.
I was making a joke, but I see why that's a foreign concept to you
Ah, so you just need to make better jokes. Good luck!
Are you like a professional nitpicker? Would explain your attitude here
Biigs
I dont want a fighter jet, what i really want is a fucking spaceship so i can get the fuck off this planet...
DocTanner
I love the slick "glass cockpit" design, but the little boy in me wants a bunch of little switches and toggles like Star Wars.
METR0ID
Sure Tesla reduced the amount of buttons. Now drivers have to cycle through options instead of going directly to the physical interface
Its332amAndMyDogNeedsAWalk
Can’t have sex while flying a fighter jet, but in a self driving Tesla?
xlogik
Please don't call them self driving, they're absolutely not. It's advanced cruise control, not close to self driving.
QuarksToCosmos
... yet. But every month's software update gets Tesla drivers closer. The hardware is there, we just have to finish up some software.
The hardware isn't there for full self driving, sorry if you believe that.

Joetheho333
I know a guy who does that for Boeing. Pilots ask him to adjust stuff and his team does.

They have to have 1 layer of controls. All buttons basically have 1 function to prevent accidents and errors.
Where as something like a tesla will have several layers of controls. And I hate that it has the display off to the side...

eldorel
Eyesight has nothing to do with it, you develop muscle memory for the controls you use.
Then why do pilots need certain vision to even be in?
Vision correction is the issue. Glasses fall off, contacts do nasty things at low pressure, and even corrective surgery can fail at high G.
interesting note, copilot/navigation officers do NOT have the same vision requirements in a lot of military flight programs.
Now that I didn't know. Huh, always need a good wingman.

The point is that people want utility over "luxury" or consolidation of features. One touch screen means if it breaks you're SOL.
Mizopoad

ICantBelieveItsNotAnal
Judging by the issues tesla's been having with servicing their vehicles and getting replacement parts, its probably not gonna be real quick.
As an aircraft mechanic, if any of those buttons break, taxpayers are SOL. New planes have buttonless touchscreen multifunction displays.
There's a big difference between consolidation and like oversimplification. At some point the benefit isn't worth the problems/cost.
