That isn't extra work, the effort put into childcare is offset by not having to cook. The effort of cooking is offset by not having to look after the kids. Someone has to build houses, the builder has time because the kids are watched and the meals are cooked. The teacher doesn't need to build the school, the fire fighter doesn't need to teach the kids, the nurse doesn't have to put out the fire and the shopkeeper doesn't have to stitch their own wound, and so on.

In an abstract way, a responsible government (I hear you laughing, hang on) is the way to achieve this 'across the board'. Min. wage, single-payer health care, hours/week max, etc. These are things that unions fight for, for their members. They are just 'closer to the point of contact' between labour and business. There are plenty of examples of strong laws and rights for workers if you look outside the USA, showing us that not only are they possible but so are governments that precipitate them.

I think it’s very situational. If people broke into your home and started beating your family, you aren’t going to try and converse with them. In that situation, violence is the first answer. I would agree that in the vast majority of situations violence should be a last resort, but I wouldn’t say it should always be the last.
