My company recently posted a new position in another department. They want someone to develop, maintain operate a new system for inventory and equipment management because things have been going missing and nobody is taking responsibility. They've recently secured and separated the area where this inventory is and seem serious about investing in it, and the project seems challenging, new and fun so I applied.
Next day HR contacts me and says they won't interview me for this. As a management member who has recently successfully overhauled two areas of my own department to a lot of praise of our owner and the CEO, I was a bit taken back and pushed to find out why. Eventually they just admitted they were looking for a entry level individual making less then any other employee I know of in our company and assumed I'd never consider such a drastic pay cut. Reminder this is to develop and run a system (both computer and physical) to protect hundreds of thousands in parts and equipment.
I immediately started talking directly to their department management about how insane this is. I told them feel free to exclude my application, but that its unfair to expect that work for that pay, and that they are simply setting themselves up to fail and lose even more inventory if they are paying that price, especially an outside hire. I haven't barked up to big bosses yet, but I am seriously considering cause it just makes us look horrible, not to mention is just asking for more loss.
My company (at least my department) is usually better then this, I work here because I sleep better knowing my teams make a decent wage vs going somewhere else so I can personally get a little bit more. Its just infuriating that its next to impossible to find a job were you don't find at least a little of this scumbaggery. Asking a trained professional to help protect your wealth for the same pay as what the Arbys across the street is hiring line cooks for (according to their window posting) is just ludicrous.

Totally insane.
ironwill2008
Employers complain they can't find any workers. HOW ABOUT YOU GREEDY ASSHOLE CEOs ACTUALLY PAYING A LIVING WAGE WITH DECENT BENEFITS???
ironwill2008
And to Bezos and other mega-billionaires of his ilk, just how much $$$ is enough for you?
IndorillNerevar
Had an interview with a big corporation who wanted a degree in the field, wanted nights and weekends to work at their data center and only
IndorillNerevar
Wanted to pay $13/hour
Taxicat
This is a huge part of why we need to push for a thriving wage. Keeping the minimum wage so low drags ALL wages down across the board.
zerinsakech9000
My last job tried that but with student interns. Bless their souls they tried their best
3rdNameUsed
Good luck. Decisions have already been made that never and won't include you. Bark all you want, but accept the results.
Findrek
Sadly. It also does no one any good if I kicked and screamed until I got fired, so that is really the only option.
WonderfunkJones
Imagine having to teach your direct manager several marketing disciplines and behind a 1-man marketing team for an entire company 1/2
WonderfunkJones
Only to be fired for "poor performance" without a performance review.
gdeamonlord
Welcome to the real world
HonestCommentFarmer
Is this what it looks like when wages are depressed for so long? Employers just expect to be able to do complicated shit dirt cheap?
ArkoneAxon
Yes.
ChrisThrasher
Only thing I'd say about Arbys or FF in general is that you are likely to only get part time hours and no benefits.
localsurfer
You're more professinal than me - I'd have laughed and said 'you're so fucked'
Terridol
OP, my company makes part and tool inventory control software. It took 3 senior eningeers 3 years to develop our latest version.
Findrek
I used the term develop because they did, but I assume they will be contracting a program and this person will be adapting/implementing 1/
Findrek
the thing, but I could be wrong. Not 100% as a never got the interview 2/2
elganif
Your probably right but even then thats basically data administration. anyone who does that for min wage probably going to fuck it up. They>
elganif
will have more losses and issues through incompetence than malice trying to push the bar that low for a job like that.
Findrek
Oh absolutely, that's why I am upset about, just wanted to clarify.
CraftyGiant
My dad wrote a system like that from the ground up like they want and he was making more than that, In 1980
SundayNapday
I had a manager who wanted to hire a full stack developer but they wanted someone just out of college so they could pay $30k
evilspock
You hit it on the head. They don't care about succeeding - they just want to pretend to be doing something about the problem.
Slixxerman
I'm starting to think they need laws or regulations about this kinda shit.
wetllama
Its age discrimination which is illegal, talk to the EEOC
Imapseudonym
In this case its not about their age. Its about HR not wanting to pay for the quality required.
AnAverageAverageGuy
Almost impossible to regulate. Unions do work though.

so the person in charge of making sure nothing goes missing will be the lowest paid person there? Thats a recipe for disaster.
Justzissguy
It’s actually a recipe for embezzlement.
spookyu
You absolutely should bring it up to the bosses, you're a manager it's totally your prerogative! Not to mention it's a smart move.
spookyu
Those on leadership that can affect positive change have a responsiblity to. If your leadership fails to understand that, it's on them.
Findrek
I probably will on Monday if I don't like what I hear from the department. Only feels grimy to complain because I applied, but you are 1/
Findrek
correct that as management my current position dictates I bring it up, regardless of my application for the position. 2/2
spookyu
Absolutely, it isn't unreasonable to make it clear your application has little bearing on the overarching problem.
spookyu
You're never wrong to look out for your people, or even potential people.
oblimo
Hate to be that guy, but maybe consider the possibility that their department management does not want the inventory loss problem solved? /
oblimo
Brining the issue up to upper management may be kicking corrupt hornet's nest, if you get my meaning. Decide on how paranoid you are first.
Findrek
Fair concern. I have enough weight at this company though and good enough performance that the risk is fairly low though, so not to worried.
MADchemEE
"You get what you pay for": Pay should always be commensurate with the necessary prerequisites, and value added to the organization.
magister333350
Reminds me of an old restaurant I worked for. They underpaid us (duh), and didnt tip the kitchen at night. So we started stealing spendy +
magister333350
cakes and brownies from the freezer at night, smuggling them out like pros. And mixing booze into our staff soda's when working. Business +
afatrollofmyown
Ah that brings back memories. I stole so much crab and smoked duck legs and fine cheeses from work. Musta stole 1lb/crab every other day
magister333350
Hell yeah. We were stealing steak & crab on friday nights. Every other night it was these fancy "death by chocolate" cakes. $40 each!
magister333350
needs to learn. You get what you pay for. And if you dont pay, some of us will happily steal/sabotage/espionage for pennies.
Findrek
Ick, I do not miss restaurant work. That sounds pretty par for the course, especially in that industry.
localsurfer
I literally had lectures on this precise phenomenon at college. Workers will have NO interest in your business success if you screw them
localsurfer
and may well actively sabotage it.
magister333350
I have a story for that. Laid off at the end of 2019 from a document destruction company. Shitty one. Sounds like fuck-it. Bought out our +
magister333350
amazing local company. Hostile type. Ran the place into the ground, tripled prices or worse. Doubled or tripled workload. So near the end +

Wonder what field. My software engineering internship was half the pay of full-time, but that was still nearly triple my bookstore job.
itsthevoiceman
Intern should always be paid.
inchoroi
It's shit like this that makes me scared about trying to go back to school at age 36.
afatrollofmyown
I went back to college for my 2nd degree at age 36. Am 39 now. Wasn't worth it. I 2nd others: drop out, learn a trade or hands on
cheeseguy3412
If you have any IT oriented skills, Cybersecurity - standards have gone through the roof. Sec+ cert is quite good right now.
inchoroi
I have a Associate of Applied Sciences for "Computer Support Technician" that I've literally never used as I've never been able to get...
inchoroi
...even an interview for anything other than fucking Best Buy.
Exquisitine
Personal recommendation, from my experience: learn the new trade, but don't waste your time and money on college
inchoroi
I make about 40k a year now, but it's working 45-70hrs a week in a factory where you can't sit down at all during your shift.
Exquisitine
Damn, I'm sorry, that's pretty fucking brutal
NLOVNI
Arby’s. Dang it. Now I’m hungry.
Justzissguy
We would be friends, I can tell.
kickmyballsrealhard
We have the meats.

Specifically for $3.50 per lb, out back of the resteraunt, cash only. No cops.

Welp. I hope your company enjoys loosing thousands of parts.
TrynaHelp
*loooosing
DarkDuskBlade
Yeah, seriously. This needs to be brought to the bosses or at least a risk assessor
NLOVNI
The loose ones just lose themselves.
jimmyriba
in the music, the moment: you own it, you better never let it go, yo.
Johnsky
When the position is filled, can you give us the employees name? Might be nice to get some cheap parts.
Stephenfromaustin
He was trying to show that you meant “losing” rather than “loosing” in your comment.
AdmiralButtStuff
Honestly if this is the kinda shit your employer is pulling I can see why people are stealing from them. I hope they never get caught.
Findrek
Like I said, at least in my dep. they're much better. That said, I do kind of hope they see record loss and the dep. gets overhauled for it
VodkaReindeer
If I were hiring and got informed that the applicant was an imgur user, I just might be less inclined to hire them due to these comments.
Darkspire
Then you'd be a moron. Sample size: 1
AdmiralButtStuff
As opposed to paying them fairly for the job you're hiring them to do. Good to know.
VodkaReindeer
I'd just pay fairly to someone who doesn't hang around the thieves guild in their free time.
Fattbeard
I'm on the other end of this. Putting in for "entry level" positions but am told I need 3-5 years of experience in that specific position.
Hexo231
Try restarting same career entry level with 10 years of experience
IFoldlyGo
Position: Requires a college degree. First day on the job: "forget all that stuff you learned at college"
HisBuddhaness
Report those companies to the Better Business Bureau, they love hearing about those companies.
redemption2517
This. Been looking for years and I'm starting to believe entry level doesn't actually exist anymore and it's all a lie
TehGuard
I got incredibly lucky. They were looking for someone with a lot more experience but took a riak on me due to the interview
AvocadoHouse
My company pays well but recently opened an “entry level” position requiring advanced mechanical & computer skills. Def not entry level
ILikeRespondingWithWillSmithGifs
Wells Fargo refused to hire entry level for an entry level position for me to learn entry lvl position job.. now I work groceries.. and cry.
DecorativeCacti
I am overqualified for entry level jobs based on experience (10 years) but underqualified based on no degree for everything else. 1/2
DecorativeCacti
So I said fuck it and I'm going back to school to change fields even though I liked my work. 2/2
jackskellington13
At least you'll now be qualified for those entry level positions.
ExoCyberBit
Entry level wages
Froggie243
I'm so tired of being considered entry level with 5 years experience after summer/college jobs in field.
onecowboytoo
Information Security?
DarkZalgo
Pretty sure entry level infosec is just a myth.
onecowboytoo
No shit. I have over 10 years of IT experience. Been trying to move into infosec for years.
DarkZalgo
Oof. And then a dude I met in college because a senior sec analyst as his first job.
DarkZalgo
Became*
onecowboytoo
He knew someone.
DarkZalgo
Yeah it took me about a year of searching to find a company that would hire me for an entry level position with my summa cum laude degree.
zoeytg
Yea, college connections are a bigger factor for being hired.
IlCastradore
Was the degree relevant to the field every time?
DarkZalgo
My degree covers a pretty broad range, but yes it was.
IlCastradore
Summa cum laude is mighty impressive at that . Good luck
DarkZalgo
Thanks, I did end up finally getting a job. Apparently the company I already work out didn't know I was looking for a job, even though I
aluminumfoil3789
When you enter the real world you will understand that a degree is a degree GPA doesn't mean squat.
wmzer0mw1
Can't speak for all fields but if u don't have at least a 3.0 in accounting you won't get hired anywhere except govt. Which is the worst.
aluminumfoil3789
Well considering I have worked for John Hopkins Northrop and Lockheed. 3 very well paying companies I have never once bee. Asked for GPA
wmzer0mw1
im sure if we narrow down your age and ur history we can find an offsetting reasonin for those.
egubePieBeast
GPA matters a bit cuz some internship positions (via the school) depend on GPA. Those internships are a good way to get into the real world
DarkZalgo
A significant number of the places I was applying for specifically asked for GPA of 3.5+. And almost all asked for GPA on the application.
aluminumfoil3789
Try listing your GPA on USAJobs see how many hits you get with that lol. Things that matter are disability, vet status, degree, experience.
DarkZalgo
...did you not read "a significant number specifically asked for high GPA"?
DarkZalgo
They absolutely do care, especially if it's particularly high in a good degree.
