The first climate change research started in the 1820s. Over the decades that followed various scientists provided additional proof, eventually leading to Arrhenius providing the first predictions for man-made global warming in the 1890s (which had to be adjusted during his lifetime to account for the massive increase in emissions).
Most arguments against it still used today comes from an early 1900s counter movement that used flawed experiments and incorrect assumptions to try and disprove it.

The bits that really piss me off is pretty much ALL of the republicans that admit it went directly from "It's not real" to "It is real but it's too late to do anything about it now lol so lets do nothing" which is also admitting the people they've been getting their news from have been blatantly lying to them for decades but even though they've been lied to to the point of destroying the planet for their children they don't even give enough of a fuck to change news stations.

Seriously, I cannot emphasize enough how worrying the fact that this is getting out of hand at an exponential rate is gonna make it out of our control when shit really hits the fan. And then there will literally be NOTHING we can do to fix it. The longer we delay action, the faster this shit will get worse and the harder we'll get hit back by it.

In terms of like actually addressing the issue were already beyond red most people just arent aware of it. I forget the exact timeline but the deadline to actually prevent catastrophic climate related events has already come and gone. We are currently in the "if we start scrambling RIGHT NOW maybe we'll save a couple million more people when the bad shit REALLY starts" phase. And were also nearing the end this phase as well.

Nope not yet ... i did a physics based degree in renewable energy and i read the IPCC reports. If you want to really understand the warning signs then read "Our Final Warning: Six Degrees of Climate Emergency" . It shows you what peer reviewed scientists predict will happen. Its easy reading especially if you are into disaster movies and thinking about how billions of people will definitely die if temperatures continue to rise.

But that doesn't attract eyeballs. We've stopped celebrating our successes. GDP and pop up, emissions DOWN. What was looking like an exponential curve up has reversed in the USA (and flattened globally). This is mostly getting away from coal. We are still in the red, but better...

Depending on what country you’re talking about, there may not be a “middle class”. In the US a lot of what used to be the middle class has slid backwards, with only a minority either staying put or actually climbing the SES ladder. Too late. We are doomed. Sorry to be such a downer. The genetic experiment 'what happens if we make a mammal smart enough to manipulate it's environment ' will be over. The answer was 'they will do more and more stuff until they destroy that environment '. Life will move on.
