Nothing special...

Things start off looking like your typical springtime thunderstorm in the great plains of the United States

Oh look, there's some rain coming our way.

Nah, son. That ain't just rain. Behind that is a monster that will tear your damn limbs off and send pieces of debris through your fucking skull if it feels like it.

Shit starts getting real.

See that dark spot to the left of the screen? Yeah... That's a massive "wedge" tornado (meaning it's wider than it is tall, in terms of the ground to the cloud base). It's coming right for these poor souls. But then again, they got themselves into it, so it's their fault really.

Can't see shit.

Winds start reaching upwards of 140 mph (200 kmh) at this point. Soon enough, nothing beyond the headlights of this vehicle is visible.

REALLY can't see shit.

Day turns to night with the amount of dirt and debris flying around in this monster. Seriously, unless you were in a bomb shelter or something, you'd probably be left in pieces a few hundred feet away. Unless you're like these insane bastards who drove right in the path of this thing. Wind speeds were recorded at about 175 mph (280 kmh) before the measuring equipment was destroyed, suggesting it could have been stronger than that.

The eye of the tornado

A few seconds in you can see a flash across the windshield leaving a scrape on it. My guess is this was a piece of iron roofing from a shed or something that hit the vehicle's windscreen so hard that it sparked. Good thing this tank of a car was lined in bulletproof glass.

Things start clearing up... finally

2 minutes into the ordeal, it finally starts to pass. You can notice the darkness of that spiraling wind of hate passing by, and daylight once more setting in. The road finally becomes visible. I dunno about you guys, but I would have likely been a fatality from having A FUCKING HEART ATTACK FROM HOW BULLSHIT SCARY THIS MUST HAVE BEEN.

The vehicle itself that rode this storm out

Called the Tornado Intercept Vehicle 2 (TIV2 for short, as it's the second version these guys had custom made), it's basically a tank that has lowering shields that hug the ground so that no wind can scoop up underneath it and cause it to fly through the air. It's just a modified SUV I believe. See those red pipe looking things on the side there? Those are spikes that lower down and prod into the earth to hold this thing down, though honestly, I think that's useless considering they would probably be safe with just the weight of the massive balls from the people riding within this thing.

MOAR TORNADO POSTS!

This is how it felt to sit through an automatic car wash as a kid.. Terrifying.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

My theory is that they actually were in an automatic car wash and they just edited the video to make it look like they were on a road..

in other words what it looks like in moore oklahoma every april-may

This looks like a truck made for a zombie apocalypse more than a tornado

Good engineers design dual-use equipment

A half-million dollar tank, and they can't get a better camera than their handheld phone, with half the screen blocked by a suction cup?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Just wanted to point out that 140 mph ≈ 225 km/h; 200 km/h ≈ 125 mph

Twister lied to us.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, pretty dangerous even with a made up tank.. You'll never know what can happen.. Well, here's my upvote

It helps that they were in a field, less heavy solid objects to throw at you.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it put a nice crack in the window.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I get anxiety watching these

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The shit happens when you get hit by something large that the tornado is carrying. Good luck to you ballsofsteel.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yeah, if this tank of a car got hit by another car or two I'm not sure how well it'd stand up.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I am fairly certain there is an up draft in tornadoes which causes most debris to be lifted higher than the vehicle on the ground.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

what goes up must eventually come down. They might have caught a car. or a house... with only those ruby anchors sticking out from under it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Generally, but low flying debris happens. I've seen fence posts stuck in the sides of sheds 2 feet off the ground from a tornado passing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yaaaaas! I love that movie.

While detassling (google it) in Iowa, a tornado started and we had to get in the ditch. Went right over our heads. It's a misconception1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that they reach down and pull things up. If you're lower than the tornado, the wind wont touch you.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd love to do that in a real tank...

Hahaha shut the fuck up this is so stupid but it made me laugh so hard wHY +1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not a tank, it's a stealth car. Tornado can't see it so it's safe.

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

That's bullshit.It doesn't have on camo.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wonder what happened to TiV1

10 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

We never found it, so we don't know what happened.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mistakes were made.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

From what I remember from the Storm Chasers tv show, the TIV1 had some reliability problems. Spent more time in the shop than on the road.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Better than "more time in the air than on the road"

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Valid point!

I love that movie so much, the script was amazing. written by Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton and his wife

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

came to see if anyone else made a Twister reference. Good on you, sir/madam! +1

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but if I remember right, the Dodge didn't fair to well in the end. What you need is a drain pipe, belts and sharp farm equipment

Thanks to watching this movie when I was young and impressionable, I now have a highly irrational fear/interest in tornadoes.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Check out that last image, the hood badge is old school cool 'DODGE'

I recently rewatched that movie. Its so so so soooo dumb.

Aww Dusty... I has a sad.

Great movie

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm not scared of tornadoes. You have to be gay to be killed by wind. You can miss me with that gay shit.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I shower in the dark because I don't want to be looking at my dick. Miss me with that gay shit...

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Its not the wind itself that kills you. Its the debris that the wind carries. Unless it picks you up and carries you then body slams you.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, I know. I was just quoting black twitter.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not aware of black twitter. I'll have to check it out.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In any case, I'm upvoting you.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I haven't watched the source, but is the audio just *whooooshh* "Holy fuck holy fuck holy fuck holy fuck holy fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!"?

10 years ago | Likes 260 Dislikes 0

My commentary would be AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH *thud*

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Watch it. With the higher frame rate, you get to see a peice of 1/8" ballistic steel (the hood) vibrating like a clarinet reed.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

... does it actually buzz?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The mic is clipping pretty bad by that point, but with one functioning ear I couldn't pick it out from the general roar.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The mic is clipping pretty bad by that point, but with one functioning ear I couldn't pick it out from the general roar.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The audio is: 'My ears are popping [repeated a couple of times]', 'FFROWROWROROROROROORORORROROR', and then 'WOO'&'FUCK'[repeated]

10 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 0

Their ears probably hurt like a bitch since the pressure inside a tornado can drop to stratospheric levels (unless the tank was pressurized)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is pretty much accurate.

Reed Timmer or Sean Casey?

10 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Reed timmer is fantastic!! I got to meet him once. So freaking knowledgeable on storms. Thus isn't him though lol.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reed is affiliated in Oklahoma now isn't he?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reed Timmer's tornado vehicle is way smaller. This guy has a 360 turret and a IMAX camera mounted on it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You have no idea how much I miss Storm Chasers. One of the only truely real reality TV shows.

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

yup, especially when they admit that most of the season is just waiting around for a storm to brew

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It did start getting annoying to watch, "Were gonna catch the storm! Aww shit, missed it again!"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The drama got aggravating too. Even the people involved were fed up with it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that's the real-est part lol

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sean Casey. Reed runs a whole different vehicle. The Dominator he calls it. Brandon Ivey rolls with Sean.

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Hey OP, I watched the show when it came out

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You and me both! I watched their show from day 1. Honestly, I didn't like how dramatic Discovery made it. Not true storm chaser material.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

FUCK Reed Timmer.
