I was thinking about it earlier this morning too. If we all had our basic needs met (housing, healthcare, food, etc.) then it would truly become a meritocracy.
Only those who chose to work, would. And if they were successful, it wouldn't be just the rich kids who 'found' great jobs.
Plus. Large industries would have issues. Nobody WANTS to work in insurance. Yet, here we are.
The admin staff in my department started stocking a little food pantry for the grad students after they noticed that some students were'nt hanging out in the break room around lunchtime anymore. Some of them have been skipping meals because their COL raises haven't kept up with inflation, and it's not like a PhD candidate can just go take a second job, not even to mention the international students we have, who would be in violation of their visas if they did that.

Fun fact about that, its one of the ways companies screw themselves over with enshitification. Focus groups test today's product against a potential future product that is cheaper to make. If people can't tell the difference, they go with the cheaper formula. Eventually the quality moves so far from the original baseline that no one buys it anymore, even though focus groups don't think version 407 is worse than version 406. Turns out 407 tastes like garbage compared to version 1.
I think that's precisely the point of the quote. Yesterday was shit, today is shit, you don't see much difference so why bother, you get used to it and don't act on it. But if you compare with what your situation was years ago, you realize it has gone downhill. That calls for action..
I appreciate community meeting spaces in small communities are where they can be, but the stained glass implies a house of worship and I don't care which one it is, that's not where we're supposed to be.
As noted, in a heck of a lot of communities, churches are the only place to hold a meeting of more than a dozen or two people. Sometimes not even schools, it can be 15 to 20 miles to the nearest school in rural districts but there are churches usually ever 5 miles (distance dating to back when most people walked or rode carriages to church - that's where I live now).
There's a *lot* of places where the church is the only place that can hold a public gathering of any size, so don't shit on the fact that this *might* be in a church. It may no longer be a church, or is only a church when it needs to be. Kind of weird how you got all aggro about meeting in this space.
You'd be surprised how many towns do not have e community center or a place OTHER THAN a church in which to hold such meetings. In many such towns, that church doubles as the community center. School auditoriums are almost never used because these meetings are not planned months in advance with an insurance doc attached, as most schools require.
I don't like who I would have to thank. Build a new community center by raising funds, or hold meetings outside in a park if possible. You don't have to bow down, worship, or use services from a racist, sexist, and homophobic God.
