Tsunamis, volcanos, earthquakes, flash floods, wildfires, tornadoes... none of those give you even a tenth of the warning time that hurricanes do. There's no fucking excuse to not be prepared. We can debate about evacuating or not, but driving in that shit is clearly idiocy.

I have two sisters that live in Florida. One stays there full-time, the other has been in New York all summer. I tried to talk the full-timer into coming up here to ride out the storm, but she refused. Well, I figured at least I have one sister smart enough to not be in Florida right now. Nope. Turns out the one that's been in NY decided to go back to Florida. Yesterday. Florida people, I swear.

Part of one storm chaser teams stream was telling several families with small children that the beach is not a great place to be, right around the moment you expect the landfall of the outer eye wall and the flooding to start. Some people genuinely seem to not know that.

I appreciated that the younger newbie storm hunter team (Connor something) consciously stayed with the northern wall, out of the surges way. The more experienced crew around Timmer went straight into it, but they also knew when to not stay somewhere.

That's a Royal Palm. They grow extremely high, and the roots are just a small ball, as you can see in this video.
One of their hurricane adaptations is that palm trees are fine with after they've fallen over. The problem is when people install them for decorative purposes like this they're usually very choosy about how they want them to be arranged, so when they fall over whoever is in charge just cuts them up and installs a new tree instead of just letting the tree live

They are 100% not grass. Grass and palms are both monocots, but they're only very distantly related. Calling palms a grass would be like calling crocodiles lizards. Just because they share similar structures and have a shared evolutionary history, doesn't mean they're the same thing.

They have very shallow roots and frequently fall over in heavy wind. Also, as a general rule with exceptions, the system is not much larger than the canopy. They evolved to fall over versus breaking in half.

Only coconut palms have shallow roots. Most palms have a taproot that goes all the way down to the water table. They use it as population control: As long as there is enough water, seedlings' taproots will reach the water table before they die for lack of water.
When there are as many established trees as the groundwater can support, they wind up drinking the water table down below where a seedling can survive long enough to grow a taproot to it, and no more new trees can move in.

There's a storm chasing stream that follows 3 teams of storm chasers and i have a few observations:
-Most storm chasers seem to be guys and the types of guys who can't help but scream, "Whoooaaaaa Storm Surge! Storm Surge! Power flash! You got that power flash? Power flash! Storm Surge coming! Storm surge! Power flash! Power flash! Storm surge!" for hours on end.
