Out of touch Boomers and the shit they say

Aug 13, 2026 9:07 PM

Not linking it because the fluff piece is the usual "We inherented a fantastic economy and quality of life due to socialism and the hard work of the generation beforehand, dismantled it all to enrich the already wealthy, and gosh darn it you kids and your avocado toast and pac-man and hip-hop music just need to pull yourselves up by the bootstraps that we stole".

.

Edit to add: Don't care that she was technically born after the Boomer generation, this is prime Boomer shit right here.

Oh shut the fuck up.

If I bought coffee EVERY DAY (which I don't) and spent $7 per coffee (which I don't) and suddenly stopped, I would have an extra 2500ish a year. Which is about 1.3 months of rent in my area, or if I invested that (which wouldn't be a full year since I would only be investing $7 per day over the year) I would have an extra... $130, assuming a fairly average rate of return.

Your mistake was not saving for your house since you were 8. In your previous life.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'd like to have the economy from thirty years ago again, maybe not all the politics but sure as hell the money side.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Stop buying Starbucks coffee is always correct, even if you have no money problems.

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I bought my house about 17 years ago during the last housing market crash and crisis. It's valued at about 500% what I paid for it 17 years ago. I cannot afford any other house in my neighborhood or even close to where I now live. I could not afford to buy my current house at its current valuation. And it's not even a great asset, even though it appreciated so much because I can't afford to sell it and take any of the equity because then where would I live?

2 weeks ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Stop trying to divert responsibility for the absolutely abusive lack of living wages being the reason people can't afford to buy houses -and it's because you and your fellow mentally sick greedy mutherfuckers keep screwing over wage earners left and right.

"...by the bootstraps we stole." Fekkin hell, chef's kiss for that summary alone.

My favorite thing about the bootstraps phrase is that it was originally meant as a critique of the absurd notion that people could do any such thing.

See, we ought to say this aloud. These monsters are used to being able to just say whatever they want about everyone else without pushback. Fuck that. Call them stupid and uneducated. Call them *weird*, because apparently they hate that. Say that you wish you the time to waste being as hateful and nosy as they are.
Stop playing nice, stop treating it as if it was good faith. It never was.

Meh, I honestly think we've passed the point of pretending that we can have reasonable, civil discourse with these omnicidal sociopaths. Genuinely, I think we should start at the richest of them, start executing them publicly, and see how long it takes for the rest of them to stop being such stupendous cunts. I think the alacrity with which they manage to manufacture at least a facsimile of humanity might surprise people.

I managed to get a mortgage on a condo 4 years ago, about 29 years after my dad bought their current house.

I asked about his loan and old income to get perspective and decide if I should buy or not. His mortgage payment as a percentage of income was within 1% of mine (almost identical numbers across a ton of metrics that were isolated from inflation).

The big difference: he was a public high school teacher and I was a level 3 electrical engineer.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well, shit, you know, I actually don’t buy Starbucks coffee. I make my own coffee.

And I don’t eat avocado toast either, as I don’t really like avocado very much.

And I still have to live with my parents at 33. Go figure.

2 weeks ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

What the heck is wrong with avocado toast? Avocados are not that expensive nor is bread.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

"stop eating avocado toast" was a common retort from the privileged class whenever millennials would criticize that we were struggling to afford our basic necessities all throughout the 2010s.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

avocados Are pretty expensive, the boomers don't want to let you eat anything more expensive than onions and potatoes.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Actually where I am, avocados are not that expensive. They are on par with onions per volume (when on sale). Not so much with potatoes but still.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

when they're on sale, but not when onions are on sale. Also, more of the avocado is not food than the onion, so even if they were the same price per weight (which, let's be real, they aren't) they're more expensive.

If I were Starbucks Marketing dept. I would lean into the whole " you can't afford a house anyway.... Enjoy a starbucks"

2 weeks ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

They are. We should burn their stores to the fucking ground in response. Not a joke, not sarcasm.

When capitalist entities like a corporation utilize mockery of our poverty to try and sell us their product, we should consider that violence. They are both normalizing keeping us in poverty, and trying to capitalize on our poverty for their profit. That is a death cult ideology, and we NEED to start treating it as such. They don't care if we die, as long as they profit. Time to act like it.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, we really need to recognize when they say let them eat cake to our faces and react appropriately.

2 weeks ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

Sure but blaming the purchase of petty luxuries as the reason why people cannot afford their basic necessities is at best monumentally ignorant of the problem at hand and at worse maliciously invalidating the struggles of the working class.

2 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Your petty luxuries right now are someone else's survival and yes we are responsible for each other

Families are starving in Michigan because someone in Birmingham is still buying clothes seasonally like that matters right now

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The enemy isn't a fellow worker partaking of the labor of their local community. Families in Michigan are NOT starving because someone in Alabama bought some clothes they liked. The enemy is the owning class who is preventing you from accessing the resources that are readily available in your community.

Pull your boots up with your self straps

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps has the same effectiveness as a cartoon character struggling to pull open a door that they are standing on, but pulling in the upwards direction just sounds better, doesn’t it?

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Note; the meaning of "bootstrapping" in computing is partially in reference to doing something that seems impossible: having the compiler for a language be written that language and then compile itself. Per a Ken Thompson anecdote, Doug McIlroy wrote, on a sheet of paper, a TMG compiler in TMG, hand computed the output of applying it to itself, typed the resulting assembly into a PDP-7, and got it to work. Not usually how you do it, but sick as Hell nonetheless.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pfft, what an attitude. You should strive to emulate Baron Münchhausen. If he was able to get himself and his horse out of a swamp by pulling his own hair, you can pull youself up by your boot straps!

2 weeks ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

If I recall, he was also able to launch himself over the enemy walls by using a chain attached to a cannon ball that was fired from a cannon. I don't know about most of it, but firing cannons at the rich seems like a great idea.

2 weeks ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

You may also be pleased with the results we would get from wrapping a chain around the rich and then firing the chain out of a cannon

Born in 1971, so she is GenerationX.

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Boomers shat in our skulls when we were kids and some Xers never cleaned that shit out. So now when they open their mouths, boomer shit falls out.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Boomers used to be hippies want wanted to change the world for the better. And then did the opposite. GenX pretended not to 'rage against the machine' but voted en masse for Trump (!) in the 2024 election. It's just a matter for time and then Millennials will start to vote hardcore conservative. I think it's not generation vs generation. Boomer vs GenX vs GenY vs GenZ. I think it;s old people vs young people. Young people want progress, old people want to step on the break and kill progress.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Then 'boomer' becomes slang for 'old people', which is fine by me.... but that means sooner or later your generation will become 'boomers' as well.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She is my generation. Most of us Gen Xers are not boomers, she definitely is.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

As a GenX I'm sorry to say you're wrong. GenX overwhelmingly voted for Trump. We are the 'boomers'. But it will happen to Millennials too. 20 years from now they will vote extremely conservative. And 20 years after that GenZ will vote hardcore Republican crap. It;s sad but old people become conservative nutjobs. Not you, not me, but the average person.. yep.

Yeah, turns out a house is more than 100,000 coffees. Are MBAs that bad at math or just adept at lying.

2 weeks ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

ADEPT at lying? The only one who believes their stupid lies is them, that actually makes them really bad at lying.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As far as I can tell MBAs have little to know real hurdles, academically or otherwise, and anyone that can afford tuition can obtain one. I'm sure some schools have a good reputation for it but overall they seem to be a dime a dozen as far as graduate degrees go.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

> cgt9803 : "Yeah, turns out a house is more than 100,000 coffees. Are MBAs that bad at math or just adept at lying."

They're great at math when it comes to making the rich richer by robbing everyone else.
They're bad liars but both mainstream media & social media spread such lies/propaganda unquestioningly.

2 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't think she's lying so much as delusional.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Technically an FHA loan only requires 3.5% down payment. Which is only a "mere" 3500 coffees.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just skip your daily Starbucks, and you'll have saved enough to buy a house by the time you're 300 years old.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They know what they're doing. It's pushing conspicuous consumption onto modern generations, keeping up with the Jones, and making people feel like shit if they can't. They keep setting the bar at a family with a house and kids, bc that keeps pushing the american dream and makes folks sacrifice their down time with grind/hustle culture trying to keep up. Lot of folks are struggling, but these vultures push media articles making people think they're not doing something right when it's the system.

2 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yes

2 weeks ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

So that 4167 days of coffees to buy a house.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

good news, the housing market is doubling faster than that, so after not having your mochafraphalfcafnon-soydoublefoam for 2083 days you only have 4167 days left to save up.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

for additional context, 100,000 daily coffees is a little less than 274 years, weekends included.

Now, I get what they're trying to imply, which is that you should cut out unnecessary and overpriced "indulgences" if you want to save up for a house, but like avocado toast it's a terrible example. Also, the whole suggestion of austerity isn't really great - life is for living, not surviving. These are the same people who will tell you to "live a little" if you hesitate to indulge around them.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's a message for other boomers to soothe their anxiety when children and grandchildren can't reach their own quality of life. Starbucks is the go-to because Boomers remember coffee as costing a nickel, so clearly Starbucks is a scam and it's therefore our fault for not buying nickel coffee.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Nah, way too respectful and gamified. Time to round them up, strip them of all assets, and put them in camps, like they've done to immigrants and prisoners for years. Then, on a weekly basis, we take a few of them out, and execute them publicly, preferably in the most horrifying ways possible. It would really behoove us to leave an indellible reminder in their collective psyche that we can and will remind them of the painful mortality they are beholden to. They seem to have forgotten.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

No. as long as they are alive there will be somoene willing to fight for them to get a taste of their money. End them fast, send a message.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But their money literally does not exist. It's numbers in databases, not real world assets, in a lot of cases, and even the real world stuff is so distributed physically already that allowing local entities to seize it after the billionaires are detained is trivially simple. Or we could just fly drones into the engines of their privaye jets like they did in ministry for the futur

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I vote for the quicker the better.

The funny thing is I don't see people with starbucks the way I used too. I don't see lines wrapping around buildings to use the drive thrus. People aren't drinking starbucks as much in general... probably because they can't afford it in the first place.

2 weeks ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 0

Probably another sad reason about it. People not buying because they can't afford it, not because it isn't worth it.

Seven Brew is very popular in my area and I see it a lot in IG posts as well. I’ll have to look into their company because they really have great coffee drinks AND a drive thru. That’s really all that is missing from small, local shops- drive thru windows.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Agreed, it's always better to go to a small local Café. They've got more to prove, so their coffee is usually wayyyy better.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The illusion of "ethical company" has long since been dispelled to the layperson.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Here's the real secret: We were never buying starbucks we couldn't afford. That's a lie made up by boomers to ignore the financial crisis that they very intentionally created to line their own pocket, at the cost of future generations having things like a functional economy and a democratic government (yes, fascism is tied to the financial crisis, no I will not explain in 500 character chunks). We are one of the most financially literate generations in history. It was never a literacy problem.

2 weeks ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

It’s always been my generation (X) supporting Starbucks. I know this because a large group of local women my age put one SB out of business during Iraq II because there was a request to send our local deployed troops coffee and SB refused. All of the protesters, as is true of most protests I attend, were women about my age. We were the ones with husbands and young sons overseas. It’s been our fault for ages that Starbucks does well.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Is Starbucks even opening new stores any more?

2 weeks ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

One just opened up in my little home town this past year. And another opened one town over just two or so years ago. They don't even realize they're already dead.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, if you can afford it, a good coffee machine is $5-600. So instead of paying between $5-8 a coffee, you could grind and make your own MUCH BETTER coffee and cost about 50-80c. The machine would pay for itself in a few months, depending on how much you drink...
Or you can just be happy with instant, I know I was for the past 20 years. I've only recently made the switch to an espresso machine.

2 weeks ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I kept reading that as five dollars to six hundred dollars and was trying to make sense of a “good machine” that costs $5. I did come up with thrifted or yard sale but even that would be AT LEAST $100, I think. LoL
It finally clicked in my head that you meant five hundred to six hundred dollars.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So ignoring the effort and time to make it involved in only 4 months, it'll pay for itself if you drink coffee every morning.

If you're like me and drink once a week, it will only take about two years

That's actually not too bad.

It's better if you get a coffee machine at a thrift shop since they're pretty common there

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My sister's Breville has lasted their family 8 years. Tech has come a long way since then but they've found no reason to upgrade. It still makes great coffee.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do prefer ground, but a normal coffee machine is fine. Even if I do instant I run the water through the coffee machine to make it.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I do the same thing, but primarily because I ditched my kettle and have a jet boiler in my machine.
I'll make instant, first thing in the morning, because I won't appreciate ground coffee when I've just woken up. 3 seconds from turning it on to hot water coming out.
