Hi guys, Kit here. I saw Imgur was doing A Day in the Life as a category, so I decided why not. A Day in the Life of a Sucky Skater. I didn't know what to put as the beginning of this, so I just took a picture after I took all of my gear off.
This, is 5:00 in the morning Kit. Full bedhead and everything. Jump training. This is just one part, the high jump, but I do a lot more like calf raises, situps, etc.
Stationary manual practice this morning. I'm trying to get better at controlling it here for longer and longer times, and maybe some skills will translate to pavement
Rolling ollie this morning. It rained last night, so most of the ground is pretty wet.
I tried doing manuals at a faster speed to see if that helped, but they honestly kinda remained the same. I found out that when I bend my knees too much, the board gets more front-heavy. I guess that's just a me thing.
Kickturns are my latest point of frustration. Last night I went on freestyle trick tips for some help, and it recommended a shorter wheelbase for this. I didn't know what a wheelbase was, so I looked it up and measured it out. My wheelbase is 14.75 inches. I found another chart for wheelbase that puts it together with height, and my recommended wheelbase is 13.75. No wonder I feel so awkward trying to do this 180. We're gonna have to put up with it though since I'm probably not getting a new deck until December.
I dunno man. We just could not Walk the Dog today. Maybe because the grip tape was wet?
This, is what keeps me alive. My usual sleep schedule is about 10 or 11 o clock to five in the morning, so I turn to the sacred coffee with Pumpkin Spice coffee creamer. Every day of the year is a Pumpkin spice day of the year. Does anyone else get sleepy after drinking coffee?
This is my best friend NoNo in my Calculus class. Currently, limits are making no sense to her. We bicker a lot, and she fusses at me for not putting icepacks on my bruises and eating too much Waffle House. She sings the soundtrack to Pitch Perfect while on the phone at 11:00 at night. She really really likes plants. I mean really likes plants. She somehow tolerates me, and we are best friends.
Me and NoNo also have English together. Somehow, SpongeBob Squarepants is related to Beowulf. We had to learn about archetypes and the format of the hero's journey. I said her archetype would be the hero, and she said mine would be the outsider. We also have epic pencil swordfights.
My third period class is library assistant, so I mostly read and help shelve books. Right now, I have Night Shift by Stephen King (I like horror and I miss spooky season) and The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett (the movie made no sense, so here's the book). I also do some schoolwork in here.
We have assigned sections to keep up with. I was out the day these were assigned so I ended up with some of the nonfiction and the entire comic book section. This is my friend Emily posing with a stack of all of the manga books I have to shelve away since apparently a lot of people here like reading manga. Emily also draws really really good. Like super good. She even painted on my denim jacket to look like the background of Metallica's Ride the Lightning. Super good artist. She also likes bones. Like skeletons. In the cool way though.
When I get home, I try to carpetboard some. Here is my carpet shove-it. One thing I'm gonna try is putting my scoop foot not on the tail, but in the pocket.
Trying the Strawberry Milkshake here. I'm still having issues picking up the board. I can't exactly tell why. I just know that it feels a bit cumbersome and heavy to flip.
My yo-yo hops are still bad. I'm trying to hold onto them more, but I think I have to go less forward but more up in my jump.
Last Stationary manual practice in the evening. Oh, if you guys could see what on God's green earth my arms are doing up there.
My nightly ritual: hot cocoa. Almost every single night a while back I would make it. Hot cocoa fixes all wounds. My current wounds are that my ankles hurt turning my feet in during kickturns. Hot cocoa will fix it.

you are in serious danger of losing your "sucks at skating" title if you keep this up
KitSucksAtSkating
Oh no! /s

YEEEAAAAAAHHH!
Goldenteckel
Best wishes from Paris, and thank you for sharing these glimpses of life with us. NoNo looks like the best friend one could wish for.
KitSucksAtSkating
And I quote "What? I'm not. Tell them I'm not"
Goldenteckel
"Yes you are ! Yes you are !..." Anyone goofy enough to sing "Pitch Perfect"s soundtrack at 11pm has the keys to a universe of wonders, laughter and high hopes (ok : maybe at the expense of a few hours of sleep). Despite the harsh moments, the ouchy ankles and the calculus, you're both making ifelong memories (as will be, hopefully, your friendship). Sorry for my clumsy english : may I be understandable nonetheless. As for the "Pitch Breakfast" reference :

For those 180° turns, try leading with your shoulders more. Twist your upper body first and your hips/legs/feet will follow more easily. It's like winding up a spring, and then lifting your front wheels is like letting go of one end so it can unwind to where the tension/momentum is taking it. Hope that makes sense!
KitSucksAtSkating
Will do
WaitressQuest
You kick ass, keep at it
KitSucksAtSkating
Thank you <3

Sleepy after drinking coffee or stimulants? Welcome to the world of ADHD. Red Bull is the best bedtime drink I've ever found.
KitSucksAtSkating
I dunno man. For me, milk kind of does the same thing. Give me some warm milk or room temperature coffee and Kit will be OUT.
ThatOtherMacAvoyWoman
Warm milk puts everyone to sleep, Kit. Lol.
FudgeWeasel
Many of us Autistics have this issue too.
FatmanSaul
Can confirm, I am also one of the Captain Autis crew

My brain an hour after taking Adderall: "time for a nap."
Mncdk
Maybe this is a dumb question, but if you want/need a narrower wheelbase, can't you just drill new holes for the trucks and move them a bit?
KitSucksAtSkating
I could, but it also comes at the risk of me damaging the deck.
Mncdk
You could also buy a new deck and move the trucks. As far as I can find, they are sold with the holes already drilled, and then you can get the proper size. But it looks like you're a student, so I don't know how easy "just buy another deck" is. :D
KitSucksAtSkating
I've been thinking about getting something new around November/December when razortail finally eats the deck alive, but I can't decide if I wanna do just a smaller popsicle deck, or go extra and commit to maybe a freestyle board. Currently I'm leaning on playing it safe with just a smaller popsicle
StevieTheAussie
Might suggest learning now how to stop properly then, before buying a new board so you can avoid giving the new one razor tail as well.
KitSucksAtSkating
You mean by just putting your foot on the ground? Just checking for clarity
KyotoGaijin
The kids are all right. I started riding in the 1970s with clay wheels at first, and then urethane Cadillacs (clear amber), Road Riders (red) and green Kryptonics. Nice memories. We didn't have all those tricks, though. Have fun, girl.
KitSucksAtSkating
Thank you :) <3
ToddTheTerrible
Wonderful view of your day!
KitSucksAtSkating
Thanks <3
nicky512
Cool beans. Looks like a nice day… in the life… heh. You get what I’m saying. Anyway, careful with skating in the rain/water, it can mess up your board.
KitSucksAtSkating
I try and stay away from puddles, but I do skate in the area called "the swamp". Mainly I'm worried about water getting in my bearings and the small cracks in my deck. Hopefully this time won't hurt it too much.
nicky512
Yeah, rusted bearings suck, and it’s dangerous. I’ve ruined my deck, grip tape, and bearings from skating in water, and I never had money to buy any of them, so I just couldn’t skate. Maybe I’m just projecting my teenage fears onto you. Haha.
stilloldbull
Old Skater here. Now and then let yourself just ride the board around. Just ride it. Most days that’s what I got left in me and it’s enough!
blues999
Well if it isn't my favourite skater. If your looking for some more horror short stories, I'd recommend Robert W. Chambers "The King in Yellow" the first few stories and poem are horror, the rest are romance (I think I may have listened to one of them, but just prefer the horror ones). I have an audiobook of it, it's old enough to be in public domain now so you can find it on YouTube. Keep up the skating, strawberry milkshake is getting smooth!
KitSucksAtSkating
ooooo sounds interesting! I'll check it out! I do love me some Cthulu!
TheMightyChewbacca
I also get sleepy when I drink coffee – one clue that lead to me learning that I have ADHD
iExplainTheJoke
ARMY PT SHORTS HOOAH ALSO THAT IS AR670-1 compliant DONT LET BOOMERS YELL AT YOU HOOAH
KitSucksAtSkating
These bad boys are super comfortable. I love shorts similar to this or basketball shorts :)
mex1man900
Aaaayyyeee I caught this in the wild! Good job with learning to skateboard! I'll probably refer to your vids if my old self decides to skate
KitSucksAtSkating
Thank you <3 I may not be the best guide, but I'm still flattered :)
NomDeImguerre
Keep it up, kiddo! You'll surpass Anthony Accipitridae in no time!
KitSucksAtSkating
The fact that I genuinely looked up Anthony Accipitridae thinking that was a completely different name makes me extremely upset that I can only give you one upvote
KitSucksAtSkating
See you guys Friday. My ankles hurt like a son of a biscuit from turning them inwards from the kickturns. Gonna chill a bit
Eomund521
Ouch. Ibuprofen will be your friend. And give yourself time to heal. As one who's been doing similar as long as you've been around. If you don't, you might regret it later in life.
jermprobably
Ahhh I've been following your journey from so long ago! It's so cool to see your day played out!! You're rad, and I hope you know you're rad. Keep being awesome, Kit!
KitSucksAtSkating
Thank you <3
MileysVirus
You should work on tic-tacs. Doing it will help your kick turns both frontside and backside.
KitSucksAtSkating
I did originally on my own and with my weird waddle, but I realized that when I do tic tacs rolling, my feet aren't in the concave but more like a manual because of how far the wheelbase is
MileysVirus
What kind of trucks are you rocking? What size deck? Going by your size I'd recommend something like 7.8. Maybe an 8 if you feel more comfortable with a wider deck.
KitSucksAtSkating
Mine is an 8 wide, 31.6 long, 14.75 wheelbase. Trucks, I'm not exactly sure off the top of my head.
MileysVirus
Good choice, later down the line when you start trying to stick a kickflip, you may find it easier with something a little more narrow. If you ever try small half pipes or quarterpipes, that will be easier with a wider deck. Trucks aren't a big issue when you are early stage of learning, I'd recommend venture featherlights or girl. Keep at it!
amalgarhythm
If you can find a crack in the sidewalk and rest your wheels in it and practice stationary mannies. Isolating the movement and letting your body focus on balance could be helpful. Keep it up dude we're all waiting to see that first clean ollie!!!
KitSucksAtSkating
Yeah that's why I started doing them on carpet. At least the carpet can hold it still enough.:)
peanutbutterandham
I dig the way you write. Great voice.
KitSucksAtSkating
Thank you :) I tend to write better than I speak :)
Kevinbfree
Hi Kit! Thanks for sharing a day in your life!
KitSucksAtSkating
Hi Kevin! Hope your day in your life today is going well!

ICE YOUR BRUISES
KitSucksAtSkating
I do now! She started fussing at me because I ended up bruising one of my legs so badly that it kinda just went stiff, so at 11 o clock at night she was absolutely scolding me on the phone for not putting ice on it, and my usual stubborn self was like "Do I look like I own a sack of frozen peas???"
kisselFL
I used to watch SpongeBob after finishing physics homework. Needed to unwind to something brainless.
KitSucksAtSkating
We ended up watching the Pizza delivery episode. Thirty high schoolers plus SpongeBob = chaos
Redisia
As a former sucky skater to a current sucky skater... Keep at it :D Its only upwards from here (unless you fall..., but thats the exeption)
KitSucksAtSkating
The only place go go from rock bottom is up! <3
WhatFuckingNameIsntTaken
First step of being good at something is being kinda bad at something and working on improving. You're consistently working on improvement, you'll be an OK to kinda good skater before you know it. Also, I'd break something just by trying to stand on a board, so you're well ahead of me!
KitSucksAtSkating
Hopefully!

#2 the slowmo hairpush is so fucking glamorous
KitSucksAtSkating
Thank you <3 My hair gets in my face all the time <3
mastikator
Good on you for wearing a helmet.
KitSucksAtSkating
Thank you :) I even put a sticker on my helmet :)

Nice. I read Nightshift probably at your age. Sucked me into Stephen King's short stories and short stories in general. If you like Nightshift try Everything's Eventual next. It's pretty good collection of shorts and novellas if memory serves.
KitSucksAtSkating
I think my first King book was The Shining at about twelve or thirteen. Wasn't that much of a fan, but I enjoyed Misery and got hooked in :)
ELKronos
What's your favorite story in Nightshift so far? I really enjoy his short stories, his novels are hit or miss for me.
KitSucksAtSkating
Not to sound super basic (I haven't finished it yet) but I liked The Boogeyman and Sometimes They Come Back. STCB didn't go the way I thought it would, so I liked it
ELKronos
Haha I wasn't expecting Boogeyman to be honest. I guess it's fairly popular and well done. I always found it interesting that you don't really like the sexist/racist father, which sort of leads to a disbelief of what he's claiming up to the end. He seems selfish and self-centered so it's not difficult to imagine it's something he did at first. STCB really surprised me too but I always chalked that up to the fact that I saw the movie first and it's so different
KitSucksAtSkating
STCB surprised me mostly because I was full on expecting just an eye for an eye rematch but nah, homeboy summoned some help from the other side and the fact that it's still going to have an impact on him like his brothers death
NatesSauceLab
What up, Kit?! Those older designs of Powell Peralta and others... the old pool and ramp decks were a bit heavy for street so the street decks evolved into narrower and lighter designs. It's hard to buy decks as a student so try to source used. Ramp/pool decks often have less wear and tear than street decks. I grew up on the pool/ramp decks and they were awesome for shredding the neighborhoods. Heavy, but felt more stable than current street deck. You have what's right for your goals, it seems.
NatesSauceLab
Also, have you considered a Balance Board for your room? I had (still kinda have) a 5 inch PVC pipe (a foot long) from Home Depot and an unmounted skate deck (could be a piece of wood, frankly). Balance Boards actually sell for over-priced versions in real life, but making your own is very easy and very cheap. https://images.app.goo.gl/u6Kd769YQ92QSz9J7
KitSucksAtSkating
I've seen people have those before, but I didn't know what they were! I've thought about those just to play around on, but I don't have a spare deck to use. It would be an interesting thing to look into though.
NatesSauceLab
I use(d) this pvc pipe with a blank deck in my room for decades. I used to stand on it for hours while talking on the phone. https://images.app.goo.gl/jqgwCUCMLybqB3Yt8
NatesSauceLab
And when you really wanna nerd out on finding your body's hinge points for upper/lower body balance points... you're gonna want a slack-line. https://images.app.goo.gl/LKSMy2u5cfkWMMfs6 I had one of these in my room, too. From wall-to-wall, 8 inches off the floor.
NatesSauceLab
Skating is all balance. Life is all balance. Find balance. And, to do so, train balance. Paying attention to balance in every step will help you to balance all risk in life. /I'm 47 and still stand on my boards and slack-lines a few minutes a day. And I still ski at about 60mph. That's probably kinda dumb. But it's easy now. I can balance the risk like drinking a cup of coffee. I also drink coffee while standing on my balance boards and slack-lines.
NatesSauceLab
My slack-lines are outside now, tied to trees. But they used to be in my room. And that was cool. I miss that. But I also have axes outside for firewood. Throwing axes is another meditation. /Maybe later... keep skating.
EngorgedPhallus
What is a Sucky Skater exactly? Like, you clearly don't suck...
KitSucksAtSkating
Me, or really it's more of a sucky skater plus three months and some change of work:)
PacManDreaming
Keep up the good work, @OP. This is the last deck I got(late '80s) before I switched gears and took up mountain biking.
KitSucksAtSkating
A Per Welinder deck! Man I have been slowly wanting more and more to try out one of the old school powell peralta decks. Just out of curiosity to just feel the difference
PacManDreaming
Yep, I always got a Welinder deck, Gullwing or Indy trucks, Slimeball wheels and Rat Nuts to hold it all together. My friends all rode Lance Mountains, Natas, Lucero and Psycho Sticks. I've wondered if modern decks are just as heavy and clunky as out old school boards were.
KitSucksAtSkating
Was it smaller like a freestyle deck? Or was it closes to just a small popsicle in size?? (Sorry, just curious)
PacManDreaming
No, it's a full sized streetstyle deck. I could never get the hang of those freestyle boards. Too narrow for me.
