#17 Ok, so where does "subtitles are annoying because it's transcribed wrong or spelled wrong" fall on this scale...?

#17 I have major auditory processing issues that are basically brain lag. I hear someone speaking, don't know what they said (but know something was said), so I used to instinctively say "what?" and then "nevermind" a second later when I suddenly know what they said. It gets even worse when there's background conversation. I've learned to not say "what" and piece together sentences based on context. Sometimes it works... sometimes it doesn't.

#17 Yes, thank you! I'm the only one in my friend group who can't focus on the tv when subtitles are on, the rest *need* subtitles. We all have ADHD.

#22 That's absurd, "No Jeffries" is business logic that should be a trigger or handled at the application layer, not a constraint in the schema.

I don't have the patience or the software to edit this but

#36 I looked this up a while ago and Roman slapping etiquette only comes up in posts like these, not in historical sources.

Bummer, I was hoping this had a degree of accuracy. Oh well, thanks for providing context!

#25 This ended in January 2019:

Using a law that bars police from entering a place of worship while a service is in progress, hundreds of supporters of the Tamrazyan family have held rites non-stop at the Bethel church in The Hague since Oct. 26 to block their deportation.

Pretty slick to sneak in an admission of homophobia by analogizing it as 'gay intolerance'.πŸ˜‰

As a lactose-intolerant person I find this highly believable.

#3 not to be a downer, since I get that religion is a comfort to some people -- but this is a story about a good guy who happened to be in the right place at the right time to inadvertently save a child, not an answer to the question "do you believe in God". People can be good, don't take away Ws from humanity like this, we need all we can get

I follow inkskinned on tumblr. Pretty sure she didn't mean that this story is proof of God's existence but more as evidence of the divinity inherent in humanity. I won't pretend to speak for her, but that was my interpretation, having read some of her other writing.

#16 what? Satan, Lucifer, and Beelzebub are three different demons???!

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yup. Like much of the Bible/Christianity, Christians interpret various names as one place/person. Hell is not actually mentioned in the Bible, but several other mythological afterlifes and real physical places are now all references to Hell, according to them.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the New Testament, many of these names get used interchangeably. In the Old, 'Satan' isn't even an individual. It means 'adversary' and can be used to refer to anyone opposing God. Lucifer is a reference to an unnamed King of Babylon who was prophesied to fall from power due to thinking himself above God. When King Ahaziah gets badly injured, he tries to ask the Philistine god Beelzebub if he's going to die, and capital-G God says "you should've asked me. Now you're definitely going to die."

So... there's not really a singular "devil" in the Bible proper. We get the name "Satan" from an old Hebrew word which translates to "antagonist" or "accuser" and is used throughout biblical stories to define simply the villain in the current story. Sometimes an angel, sometimes mortal. In one such story our antagonist is an ancient king, among whose titles was "Morning Star" and, as it happens, this was also the title of Lucifer, Roman god of light, associated with the planet we call Venus.

Beelzebub was a Philistine storm god sometimes associated with the Greek god, Zeus. He was adopted by Judaism as a major demon associated with death and decay, or Lord of the Flies. He was then associated with another aspect of Satan by Christian scholars.

Thank you for your detailed reply. I feel better informed now.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Medieval scholars decided all these scattered references to "Satan" must refer to a singular evil figure, the same Satan appearing in every story where the word appears. Since this Satan is also the Morning Star, he became inextricably linked with the name Lucifer. Late medieval scholars decided to associate the different arch-demons or titles for the Devil with each of the Seven Deadly Sins: Lucifer with Pride, Beelzebub with Gluttony, Satan with Wrath.

#17 there are 13 neurodivergent people in my house. Only 5 have no preference either way. 2 need subtitles. 2 hate subtitles. 4 it depends on the mood &/or what's on. We can't watch TV together.

1 year ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Need google glasses or something, with subtitles rolling on the HUD. Or get a subtitle display screen above the TV like they have at operas for translations

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That seems like a lot of people for one house! Are there even more who aren't neurodivergent?
