Yeah, self-driving cars only work in specific areas where the roads have been surveyed and mapped to the nearest inch, and no road signs or roads are added or subtracted without updating the entire database. This is also why Tesla's "self"-driving cars will never, ever be truly autonomous.

I will note that most of those deaths are because of Tesla's autopilot and its lack of a LIDAR (it just uses a pair of cameras to fail to see pedestrians and other vehicles).

And Tesla's (Well, Elon's) excuse is "multiple sensors can cause conflicts".
As opposed to programming the thing to act on caution and go with the potential false positive as opposed to a potential false negative. One sensor "thinks" a person is going to step in the road while another doesn't? Have it act like a human driver that isn't sure if a person is going to step in the road. Slow down and keep an eye on them so YOU DON'T HIT THE PERSON.

None of this is accurate, just btw. Plenty of reasons to hate Musk, but make sure they're real. Tesla went for camera sensors because humans use vision to drive. Their first versions also incorporated radar and ultrasonic sensors, which are also the ones with higher incident rates.
The FSD AI uses two computers that both make driving decisions in real time, and the vehicle only makes decisions where both are in agreement. Sensor conflicts are... not a thing.

I could also go on about how neural networks are trained, but suffice to say that none of it is programmed directly by an engineer. They use video data to train the AI what is correct and what is incorrect based on human driving. If it does something that is incorrect, it's either because it was a situation that doesn't happen often, or because humans also do it incorrectly most of the time.

There was a video of a Tesla who when encountering a road worker holding the stop/slow lollipop sign, did stop, but immediately proceeded.
It did not differentiate between the octagonal fixed stop sign and the mobile circular stop sign being welded by a construction worker.
Will be fun when self driving vehicles encounter police conducting traffic.

The last 3 to 5 years of development has been explosive comparatively. This has led to a lot of misunderstanding among general public and potential issues. Its just messy currently and the US has different regulations per state making it even harder for the general public to know what the actual fuck is out there.
