The black thing that floats away is called a pilot chute. It attaches to the canopy using something called a bridle. This bridle has /1

pins that close the container(rig) that has the canopy inside of it. When the jumper throws the pilot chute from its pouch into the /2

air stream, it inflates, pulls on the bridle pulling the pins which causes the container to open. Once the container is open, the bridle/3
