Extraverted people get told to shut up ALL THE FUCKING TIME on a constant, daily basis. They don't need articles on it because it is constantly happening every single fucking day multiple times a day.
Introverts typically do know how to be social. I've never understood why we have this image of them as ignorant caterpillars wanting to come out of their cocoons and being social butterflies but not knowing how.
It's funny: I can be quite social and would never say I'm an introvert, but last night after a get together, I said to my wife "...why is it so hard for [person A] or [person B] to just let a moment of silence happen?!? Why do they seem to need to CONSTANTLY talk?!!".
A little from A and B, people self diagnosing is absolutely an issue- but some people are just naturally more outgoing than others. People feel the need to want to 'label' stuff.
I love you, but don't buy into the bs! I've been told that I'm an introvert, an extrovert, an ambivert, and an omnivert. All from people who don't have a therapy license.
My two cents are this, people display behaviors at different times with different people. They don't souly embody a definition just to make themselves better understood. Labels like these actually reduces someone and causes frustration when they don't fit into that perfect package!
I'm an extroverted introvert (I love chatting but fuuuuck me is it tiring and I have zero self control) and my coworker is an introverted extrovert (hates small talk but really really wants to parallel play at all times because he gets lonely af) so now at work we are apparently a single entity and our other coworkers refer to us as if we're one person.
Everyone in the world, especially introverts, should read the book "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking" by Susan Cain (2012). It contained a section that talked about how, counterintuitively, outgoing infants and toddlers usually end up as introverts and withdrawn toddlers and infants usually end up as extroverts.
It’s not like you who I’m talking to has the power to change the unbelievable circumstances that have conspired together to create a modern living hell in which we all exist. So yeah, I’m “okay.” “Just a little tired.”
Introvert and extrovert are true but not in the ways people make it out to be.. introvert does not mean shy. It means you lose energy with social interaction. An extrovert isn't outgoing it just means they gain energy with social interaction. You can be a shy extrovert for instance.
For some people social interactions and acceptance is foundational to their sense of self, like to the point of being a biological need. While others it isn't so important, but studies show that long term isolation is one of the most psychologically damaging things you can do to a person or yourself.
Being around people was the largest cause of my mental health issues. Since pretty much cutting of contact with most of the outside direct contact, I have seen a noteable improvement.
As is the case with most things in life, it's a balance that needs to be struck. The issue is everyone's balance is different. I don't need a lot of friends like some people do. Finding what your balance is will show noticable improvement in mental health.
Society is more accepting of introversion than ever before. Almost everything you need can be had online...and self-checkout exists for what you need to be in-person to buy. People spending all day inside streaming old shows or movies is just a day-to-day thing now too. This article is 6 years old...which in the current landscape of social interaction might as well be 20 years ago.
that's not really "society is more accepting of introversion" though, that's, "capitalism+tech=we want you to consume every single second of every day as efficiently as possible"
And to be frank...everyone being able to be solo all the time is probably part of the reason we have so much division and hatred...if you don't actually have to interact with people, then you don't know people.
That's great in theory, but we are in an era of nearly full isolation. Is the world better for it? You don't have to go to parties, arcades, or expos...but having a couple people in your life that aren't immediate family is something that helps keep people connected.
I don’t know the name of a single neighbor in my neighborhood. It’s like living in a ghost town most of the time only ever seeing people grabbing Amazon packages or leaving in their vehicle. I’m not a people person but never interacting with anyone ever is one of the worst things to happen to humanity.
Look at the average politics of cities and rural areas. People who have to interact with other people are more likely to be in favor of programs that provide support for community.

The group that was told throughout childhood to shut the fuck up? No, they never get told to be quiet & reflective. (I'm not an extrovert)

Lots of people with severe social anxiety think that severe social anxiety is introversion.

Why would anyone assume an introvert would want to be more social? Everything I know about society is against my will.

Extroverted?!?! In THIS economy!?!?

They are the same group who used the craze of being mindful as some superpower they never had.

If you think it can't be transformative, you probably don't understand what mindfulness is.

I used to be extroverted. In these last years, I thought I was aging into introvertion. Nope! I'm just too poor to do shit.

Extroverts and introverts don't exist. I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
I don't care how many dislikes I get. Pop-psych is a plague on our society. Too many people are self-diagnosising themselves and others.
