Most clear tapes aren't that adhesive, he's going to lose a few hairs but not enough to be noticeable, he wont lose a lot unless he really presses the tape into his eyebrows to get the hairs to really stick and even then it still will be less than what you'd expect
I really forgot that onions making people cry was a thing until I was teaching my 7 year old daughter how to chop one, I was so confused for a few seconds, after a few tries it doesn’t bother her anymore
I actually used to work at a pizza place where we devised all kinds of ways not to cry while cutting the onions: lab goggles with the holes taped shut, Saran Wrap, etc etc. Nothing worked.
Trick i learned: put a wet washcloth near the area where you're cutting (pretty close). The nearby water attracts (maybe?) the Suberin, and it turns to sulfuric acid on the washcloth instead of your eyeballs. Seems to work, ngl.
Also, sharpen your kitchen knives. The less your press down on them (and the more slicing motion you do) the less the juice gets squeezed out and shot into the air.
This part. I would totally trust a cook with no eyebrows and scars on his body. That means he's made lots of stuff and handled all sorts of mishaps and still cooks.
interesting bit of trivia, your eyes burn when cutting onions because they emit a gas that binds with the water in your eyes and becomes sulfuric acid.
'Sir, I've never seen a case of both corneas being detatched at the same time. What happened?'... 'My job at the Brazillian Wax Spa taught me to yank the tape really fast!'...
Or, if that's not possible, a huge help is frequently moving the cut onions to a bowl or plate to the side, instead of keeping the already-cut pieces on your cutting board, under your eyes.
That crappy tape might, but normal tape doesn’t release fumes. It’s simply not good idea to apply tape to your eyeballs without preparing them first. It won’t stick very well because they are wet. Dry them off really well with paper towels first, two passes. If it still won’t stick, I can recommend a spray on primer or you can wipe them down with IPA and then let it evaporate before applying. It’s all about the surface preparation with tape.
Best $12 I ever spent was getting cheap swim goggles to cut onions. Sometimes I have to cut up 2 or 3, and I'll TASTE all the fumes in the air that would be burning my eyes horribly but now it's all good :)
I used to do the same thing, my family would joke but it worked. I learned that by leaving the root ball untouched it becomes a non-issue. There's a gordon ramsey video on it
I can confirm this is accurate. I learned it from a gordon ramsey video, and it was a game changer ever since. The onions still off gas but by many orders of magnitude less than if you hit the roots.
badairdayyay
Ehm… the stuff that makes you cry mostly goes up your nose. So not only is this stupid, it doesn’t work either :D
Spiffiee
Onions never effected me at all. Is anyone else in the same boat?
Syko73
I use a small desktop fan
Molvanian
A fan works well too... Though that would be harder to secure to your face I suppose.
BeefyByDesign
Me cutting onions every week and not having any issues with tears....

Ya, they don't really affect new anymore

I use a pair of safety goggles with the air vent taped up.
dbbbbs
Also, if he were so smart, why didn’t he put on the tape before he started?

Splash water in your eyes before starting to chop. Makes the onion think it's already won so won't bother with the whole gas thing
SithElephant
I just close my eyes.
darkmyst30
Just chill your onions people.
TheBlueMuppet

ThrockmortonTheSkateboarder
Just put some water on the cutting board and the knife.
JacobsJ52
Or chew mint gum
Theniyaal
Chew anything. I used to just chew on a small wad of paper towel when prepping onions back when I cooked.
JiffyGee
Chill your onions. The colder they are the Leas the smell is released.

Eyebrows what? What about eye lashes, eye lids?
Kazeroth
Rinse your hands, the knife, and the onion in cold water
OobedoobScoobyDoobyBenubi
Chop the onions into slices then soak in a bowl of water for a few minutes to remove the sting
BastonneKnight
I've been drinking coffee while doing prep and either it helps or I've just gotten used to it by now.

Never trust a chef with no eyebrows.

Never trust a skinny inkeeper.

But, ABSOLUTELY trust the explosives expert with no eyebrows, but all their digits.
ImNotReallyADoctor
IL be sure to always have my eyebrows when I decide to trust a chef then
PervertedTango
Remove tape in one quick movement. Be sure to have someone next to you to pick up your eyes from the ground.
MileysVirus
I trust a chef more with no eyebrows hes dedicated to the cause.
squigglebaketerraform
A good, proper stir fry is all about lots of heat. No eyebrows? Good sign they might be working with enough heat.

What kind of gas? Sulfur oxide?

My eyes emit gasses? Nooooooo

lol the onions, but my grammar is shit, i know!
TheBlueMuppet
English has this way of being flexible to the point of ambiguity. But it's not Japanese where the subject is just optional.
TheBlueMuppet
That's just goofy!

"it was... THAT MAN!" whos that man japan?!
TheBlueMuppet
"you know!" No sir, i do not.

I don’t think so

I just use my old lab goggles...
jamesjive
If you have an oven with an exhaust fan it is usually good enough to remove the onion fumes

This is almost as smart as just using a sharp knife (which dude clearly already has).

Adhesive has fumes that are terrible for your eyes

You can immediately smell how unhealthy the adhesive must be from how acrid it is. Now place that close to direct contact w the surface of your eye.

Okay, so i have the tape directly on my eyeballs. What now, because I gotta tell ya, this is not really my idea of a fun swinger party activity…

Well. You're stuck with it now.
Perkunas687
Eyes don't breathe, bud.
DaveSamsonite
Fumes affect eyes. The sulfuric acid funes from fresh chopped onion can make your eyes water and sting.
drosophilamelanogaster
Yes they do. The cornea isn't vascularized, it absorbs oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere.
Dajova
Explains why when I hold my breath underwater, air bubbles escapes through my eyes. Cus the air gets pushed through there.

I use my swimming goggles. It leaves my eye brows intact.

I wear contacts and it’s WAY better than chopping onions bare-eyed.

I just chill my onions before chopping them in the fridge. The cooler the volatile compounds are, the less they go in the air. https://www.epicurious.com/expert-advice/how-to-cut-onions-without-crying

I just chew gum, it actually does work.

Just keep your onions cold, put them in the fridge. No more tears

This plus having contacts means I chop the onions at my house.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
This is what I do. Works perfectly.
PinkyTheUnicorn2
Just don’t cut through the root (the part with all the stringy dangly bits) and you’ll be fine.
supercalifragilisticexpialidociousl
Yeah, don’t stick your dick in crazy -as were all warned, but we do it anyway!

Why the downvotes? Is this true or not?

I think we saw the same video. I'd even add that having a very sharp knife also helps a lot.

Sharp knive will also help a lot
