Not easy being an adult elephant either, but mostly because humans are dicks to them.

I had a fun conversation with some Indian colleagues who told me about how they have an "elephant problem" at their homes. Because the civilization is encroaching on the jungle (or the other way around, if you prefer), and elephants are protected, they find elephants coming into town, trampling yards, stealing food, all the things you might expect from raccoons in the US. I thought the whole thing was totally delightful, even though I'm sure staring down a troop af adult elephants is scary af.

I saw a documentary once where they solved this exact problem by hanging beehives around the community in a ring. Each hive was connected to the next by a wire about 8ft off the ground. When an elephant walked in to the wire it would shake the hives and anger the bees. The elephants would run away from the swarm, back to the jungle, unharmed. Plus, each villager owned one of the hives and benefitted from the honey production. Seemed like a good system.

This isn't the doc I watched but it's explaining the same thing. I hope it can help them! I'd be curious to know. : )

I love that the people in the jeep throw up their hands like "oh no, the big mighty elephant looks like it might charge us! *wink*"
