It's shocking this still needs to be said.

Recently, I've been experiencing this A LOT at my local gym. Also, it's also been exclusively from one specific demographic, which is making me feel like a racist asshole for even noticing, and making me too paranoid and self-conscious to even address the people doing this and ask them politely to stop doing it, lest it be misinterpreted as something malicious. One person literally pulled up next to me, mid set, started music on their phone, and proceeded to dance and loudly talk while streaming, and I was right next to them, visible, the entire time. MID-SET.

Please stop doing this shit! It's fine to listen to the music at the gym; it's also fine to record your lifts, so long as it's not invasive of other people's training sessions. But please, PLEASE, stop blasting your music into the shared space, and please don't treat the entire gym like it's your own personal fucking studio. It's not.

Around here these are the same people who slams weights and work out in groups no less than five.

Complain to the gym. I'm sure that they have rules against it and should be enforcing them. If they don't do anything, then it may be time to find a new gym

Also add the Dill holes who talk on their phones on speakerphone in public. WAYYYY too much of that going around. I can't walk into my local Walgreens or grocery store without knowing who Barbra dumped today, or that Timmy finally took a huge turd, blah blah blah.

Also on a trail in the wild. Nobody came up here to hike so they would get blasted with your shitty music.

*Anywhere in public.

I give a pass in cars for people who turn it down at stoplights and shit. It's me I'm basically saying I give a pass to me. But headphones when you can. I also give a pass to cyclists who do that radio setup too, also can't do headphones for safety, and I don't mind if you're buzzing by me on foot, I only have to hear it for a few seconds

Someone was doing this at my local caffe bout a month ago. They didn't know I actually run the Internet at the cafe (office is upstairs). I just checked to network to see who was streaming and put them on a permanent block list. Loved the frustration. I was initially concerned, because it kept playing for a while before it shut off. That's probably the 3rd or 4th time I've done that, but usually for people having loud FaceTime meetings with no headphones

I was looking for the Data/Lore meme, but this works too.

Had to listen to a man watching some religious show as loud as he could at the whataburger the other day. It sounded like an after school special about how most people will go to hell, and what they can do to save them. Such nonsense.

Dude-- the amount that one demographic seems to be the ones that stand in front of all the dumbbells instead of taking what they need and move away-- I really start to feel like an asshole for noticing.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

In my area, that demographic is just... High school teenage boys...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My gym has this rule that you are not allowed to record while on the premises, nor play music over speakers. Doing so gets you kicked out promptly. The rules that are posted are your only warning.
I love it.

2 years ago | Likes 154 Dislikes 0

I would love for my gym to have a rule about sitting on a piece of equipment scrolling on your phone.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't get how that isn't a standard rule, it's common sense.

I am just out shopping and suddenly I'm in some random child's tick tock. Same concept. I just want to get my groceries, not be in a lame ass video.

Yep, these people need their balls slammed in a car door.

I once stepped in when someone was streaming in public and said hi to all the viewers. The streamer got huffy and said, " Hey, do you mind? I'm streaming live!" I told her I know, that's why I said hi to everyone. When she started to get belligerent, I asked everyone if they were enjoying the content but it was too bad it was all staged and walked away.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can I ask a serious question here? One of the reasons I stopped going to the gym was because of the way people act. Say there are twenty stationary bikes available. I'm the only one there so I take a bike and start my routine. Why is it that when the next person comes in they take a bike right next to me? I have earbuds in so I don't want to talk. Just curious.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Could be that person uses the same bike every day at the gym so you actually choose the bike next to "their" bike. Ppl like routine.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm not currently going to a gym but when I was, the equipment was not all identical and not all in equally good condition and I definitely had a preference for certain machines.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's annoying but sometimes being close to another person helps you not slack off.
Though that might be an optimistic viewpoint. I try not to get right next to someone, but I do tend to be two away.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Almost as bad as people choosing the urinal right next to you while 10 other ones are not in use.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's a clear bro code violation.

I believe you get your ass kicked doing something like that

Folks at my gym bring in a GIANT Bluetooth speaker and shake the whole room with their music for hours and hours. I stopped going to that gym.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's a guy near my work who sits out in front of his house and plays music through a huge portable speaker.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope... Only in the sauna when I'm the only one in there. If someone else comes in it gets paused till they're out.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Read up on the TOS of your gym. it will probably have something along the lines of "no video / photo of others". and you can always tell them "hey man, if you wanna hear music, get yourself in-ears or a headset. you are disturbing a lot of people who don't want to hear music while working out."

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Brother, OF COURSE it's against the TOU/TOS/EULA/whatever. But in the modern gym environment, you have to be willing to either risk a 1st person confrontation (HELL NO, thank you) and/or stop whatever you're doing to go make a complaint to the 1-3 employees on staff and hope they're willing to take the chance, because more likely than not, they want nothing to do wit the wannabe isntagram star either.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Talk to the gym staff then.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same on the ski slopes. Peeps blasting out their music from bluetooth speakers strapped to backpacks. I don't want to be subjected to the often overly loud, distorted noise while being stuck on the already unpleasantly long lift queues. Even worse if it is the middle of a peaceful run. Enjoy your music all you want, but why not just wear bluetooth headphones (in ear or over-ear)

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'd never even considered that possibility. I spent plenty of time on the slopes when I was younger, but it ended just about the sametime bluetooth-connected sportsy speakers were becoming popular, so despite how frequently I used to hit the slopes in Oregon, Utah, etc., I guess I stopped before this sort of thing became commonplace.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had a trip to Tahoe. While not everywhere, it occurred frequently enough to be annoying. Encountered a about 5-10 times a day

I've wanted to go to taho, but it's surrounded by cities like Las Vegas, and

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I play music while I'm on my kayak 🤷‍♂️

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Inconsiderate if others are around.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

How tf is that inconsiderate? The whole gd beach and other boats are playing music and talking loud af. Ya'll need to go the fuck outside.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am outside most of any day that is nice. people do a lot of inconsiderate things in public. Doesn’t make them correct.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I once worked out at a gym with very strict rules on phones and interaction. Hitting on someone was a ban-able offense. Phones only allowed for music in headphones. No speaker phone, ban-able offense.

It was paradise. Everyone who was there was there to lift, everyone was serious, everyone put their shit away.

And everyone was jacked. The women, the men, the teenagers. Never been in a room with so many chicks that could blast 2 plates in bench for reps. I was one of the weakest people there!

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Bannable*

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I consider myself pretty lucky, while there are no explicit rules like these at my gym (though I WISH they were at EVERY gym!), everyone I've shared the space with so far has been pretty respectful. Everyone wipes down equipment, no one hits on anyone, and everyone uses headphones... there's 1 dude who had a speaker conversation while he was on the bike, but that has thankfully been a single instance only. Not everyone is jacked yet, but most of us are trying! Lol

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice! this was a powerlifting gym and there were pros that trained there. I went cause their equipment was awesome and they had everything. Lots of people on gear, tho. I could bench 225 for reps back then and I was probably the bottom 5% with my 285 max.

I think I’d die under 285 today lol.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Hitting on someone was a bannable offense."

That sounds like shit. That's the kind of thing that is far too easily weaponized and abused. Young men are already paranoid in the gym, and it's worse for aging fatasses like myself. If there's a woman nearby at all, my eyes are straight to the floor until they've left. I've seen too many people get lambasted for making the mistake of a casual remark or even just a glance.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

...Which, coming from the olympic weightlifting community, is a weird transition. In WL training halls, everyone is basically watching and audibly encouraging whoever's lifting. You will absolutely be stared at, spoken to, and often criticized.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It was literally never a problem. Despite what I said it was laid back about most things cause everyone was there to put in work. Lots of people watched each other lift, it’s only a problem if you are staring.

“You can’t even glance at a woman anymore!” - ok

Replace »at the gym« with »in public« and it's complete. It's not even funny, like those people speaking »on the phone« while holding it before their faces, similar to a TOS communicator. So not a jota of acceptance from me for this BS.

2 years ago | Likes 364 Dislikes 2

Yes! My top two least favourite places for this are public transit and on a bicycle. People commuting shouldn’t be forced to listen to your music

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: I just had that on the train. And not just one person, but two or three. I swear, etiquette is moving down the drain more and more. I sound like my own grandfather would. But in all fairness, three different individuals blasting it with their fucking phones? Even in my youth that wasn't an issue, not even with the stupid beepy ring tones from back then.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not much you can do in public. In a gym you can look at your membership contract to see if there are rules against such behavior and then ask the staff to enforce them.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Ugh. I wish my last gym enforced behavioral policies. One regular would slam machines so hard that they wobbled. They were bolted to the floor, but those bolts were loosening. He'd use his single rep max to get started, then bounce full sets by pulling them into the pads for higher rebound. Every machine. Every night. I could hear the slamming in a different room across the gym. That broke safety and etiquette policies, but the gym refused to stop him.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep those people can literally...

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When people are on speaker phone in public, I either join the conversation or I straight up tell them "nobody wants to hear your fucking phone conversation". Works fairly well.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I always want to sit next to them and play the opposite style music. Say country to rap, or something obnoxious like punk. Or ska, I love ska but ever one seems to hate it.

Wrong country, pal. Where I come from, those to are barely distinguishable from one another, when you say them aloud.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

What country please? I assumed it to be a typo or barring that an ironic combination of “jot” and “iota”…

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Germany. For us, I and J at the beginning are *very* similarly pronounced. Just guessed the writing in English and fucked up. ;-)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So you pronounce it like ~"(j|y)oh-ta" ? In french iota is really different from (d)jota (or "rr-ota" if you try going for spanish).

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, this is true, but it's EGREGIOUSLY more offensive when at the gym. The only worse place I can think of is the library.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Hiking. Oh sure champ, I wasn’t enjoying the sound of the wind and the birds and nature in general, I’d much rather listen to whatever hot garbage you’re pumping out of your shitty $10 external speaker you mounted to your backpack 👍🏻

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I really hate it in public transport.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I hadn't thought of it, but I can completely see how that would be worse. Since the pandemic, I've worked from home and rarely had to commute. At least the gym, is something I've chosen to do in my "spare" time. Public transport commuting to work is something you're *required* to endure in order to ensure you can meet your base needs for survival.

Enduring annoying music in that scenario sounds far worse than my complaint.

What about the people that go hiking in nature, and they have a special trouser-belt mounted noise box. I have seem them on bicycles bikes too. If you must have noise, wear headphones. Or stay home where I assume your TV is always on in the background.

2 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 1

That's also »in public«. Unless you have your own private »nature« to hike in, where nobody else gets bothered by exactly what they were trying to get away from.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

What? You don’t wanna hear kid rock blasting up the trail? Who knows they might take requests

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Say what you want about skrillex, but his hype during shows is pretty infectious, if you're into that sort of thing

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Or the people with the speaker on their backpack skiing. That's right, jackhole, we're all enjoying a pristine day in the mountains, but it would be SOOOO much more perfect if we all get to hear your crappy dubstep in the lift line for 15 minutes.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ehh, a bit more acceptable back country hiking - normally you at least wear bells so you don't spook the dominant presators (bears, mountain lions)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, if you want to warn bears, wear a bear bell, don't play music.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I mean, I've done that, but it's been on back-country hikes where the chances of seeing someone are about 1000x less likely than running into a bear, and I prefer to be able to hear my surroundings still. I've run into people doing this shit on busy trails though, but I'd still rank that lower on the offensive annoyance chart than going to the gym and hearing their music compete with whatever is on the speakers.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

I once hiked up Stone Mountain in GA... it was like being in a zero-ettiquette gym + hiking simultaneously. 10/10 will NEVER do that again. Gatdamn urban hiking hahaha

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Consider bone conducting headphones. You stay in contact with the world, can hear your own music, but no one else can. (https://shokz.com/) I have some, for meetings though rather then hiking.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Whoops their phone was right under your weights. What were they thinking!

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Drops first weight "oh sorry is that your phone" drops second weight "oh sorry is that your foot"

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This actually happened once purely by accident while I was lifting with an aspiring (but very fucking broke) bodybuilder. I saw it happen, he saw it happen, but I ignored it until I did my set, then loudly exclaimed "Oh shit! I broke my phone."

It was (and is) insured, and that was the one and only claim I've had in nearly a decade. I wasn't going to make that broke kid pay to replace it.

It also always sounds garbage because of the crap speakers... but neither of those things matter compared to the sheer douchebaggery.

2 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Idk I went to the gym one morning and a guy was blasting “Eye of the Tiger” and the Rocky theme song and everyone there was loving it. Then again, morning gym goers are weird.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I've only ever really been in gyms at night, it's usually a pretty tame group. Like lifting weights in a library kind of.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even good music is shitty through phone speakers. Don't know how you youngs do it.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

My kids love playing stuff on echo dots tiny speakers when they could just play it on the ok sound system we have. They don’t understand why I want big speakers and a sub I can don’t understand why a little echo or phone sounds ok to them. My 4 yo at least prefers thunderstruck on the big one, hearing it 5 times a day still has t gotten old

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They play whatever is considered "cool" at the time, because they never got out of the high-school mindset of needing to advertise group-affiliation through the music they listen to.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I've noticed that people with the worst music etiquette (loud neighbors, gym streamers, bus djs, etc.) always play the worst music. It's almost like lacking self-awareness and terrible tastes go hand in hand.

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Lived next to a dude for a year who has by far the worst music taste I've ever experienced. And by far followed your rule to the letter and then some. Every fucking day just bass blasting the entire apartment from his stupid giant speaker or from his truck on the OTHER side of our unit for at least 6 hours a day, sometimes 12. Landlord of course did fuck all. He was generally an awful person as well. Littered everywhere, abandoned dog, slammed doors, left shit outside, parked poorly, violent.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The music was just monotonous country bass beats btw. Like a mixture of trap and racist country tunes. Nothing but the same exact tune for hours on end vibrating the whole fucking house. The only allowance I ever got for being pissed was when I outted my autism and adhd to him and he was like OH MAN I GET THAT and then did nothing to improve the situation. Did I mention litter >:(

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, he left a giant burnt hole in the lawn for like 6 months, too. And regularly would leave 5-6 full bags of trash on the shared deck for weeks so he didn't have to walk 20m to the trash collection. All star college football player btw. Not an unfit person. He's 400 lbs and 6 foot 7 and benches like 550lbs
