Been on extended sick leave, so cleaned up home network and extended home automation hub.
Edit 2: As promised have made another post with some more details: https://imgur.com/a/N9hXp
Edit 1:
Thank you for the love. I will create another post next week with more details of Home Assistant.
Project details here: https://home-assistant.io/
Here is one of the Pi-Hole Web Interfaces: https://imgur.com/a/jf3mS
What you see:
- Draytek Vigor 2862ac: 5GHz VDSL router
- HA RaspberryPi3: Running Home assistant with a Aeon Zwave controller sticking out (controls smart home devices in one place)
- Pi-Hole RaspberryPi3: Runs Pi-Hole for Ad blocking and some other network tools
- TorPi RaspberryPi3: Running a TOR proxy router and a second instance of Pi-Hole
- Netgear Semi-Managed Switch
- Netgear Arlo Hub: For 4 Arlo Pro Cameras
- Hive Hub: Controls Heating and Hot Water
- Philips Hue Hub: Controls Lights
- Traditional Alarm Panel: trying to figure out how I can integrate a zwave binary sensor into it
- Fibaro Somke Sensor: detects heat and smoke changes and reports temperature
Please note: house has loads of other sensors that feed into the HA hub
kilocron
Why are you using 2 Pi-Holes if you don't mind me asking?
gotcl2
I kind of want to make a “server cabinet” but more for just smart home hubs and guts
soulman901
In the Year 2018 the house of tad9001 became self aware and by 2028 humanity was conquered and destroyed
UonlyThinkyourDead
i did the same thing with my security set up, labeled dogs 1 and 2
KatamariDamaci
Hope you get well soon.
tad9001
Thank you. Think I am over the worst of it ????

For some reason when I saw DrayTek I read DickTray
tad9001
The Internet has ruined you
dianabanana8
Are u this productive at work too lol. Great use of time op
tad9001
Thank you. Have been known to be.

Hope you feel better soon!
tad9001
Thanks
TheRicM
Welcome!
tad9001
How civilised
beetcher
how about a detailed post of what all your stuff does?

Draytek, the sign of someone who knows their shit.

Wait a minute! I know that video! It was on california (IIRC) public access TV in the 80s or something! Please tell me you remember title!
gendeates
The color theme reminds me of 90s technology
tad9001
Ah the glory days
TwoDogsNextDoor
I have spent the last 5 hours installing home assistant on fedora workstation as a VM on my server and linking my services because of this.
tad9001
The project has moved to trying to use the web interface more imho stick to vim and config files.
tad9001
Top boy. Welcome to a world of joy and frustrations. HASS is addictive. Check out the examples page on project website for GitHub links.
TwoDogsNextDoor
Thanks I will! Seeing your clan network setup also inspired me to do the same. Just love the clean look of it. Calms my nerves haha.
tad9001
I'm a network and infrastructure guy. So HA appeals to me as I can do basic network/system based bits.
tad9001
But seeing you virtualize and have fired up a Linux image, I have a feeling you are an ideal user ????
MaDragon
Wow! @trahx .....And I thought YOURS was amazing - look at what this person has done. So cool. And the smoke detector too? Awesome!
tad9001
Thank you
Nemacol
Love a person that labels everything. Well done.

Kudos on the Pi hole and the Draytek, nice kit
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
Home assistent +1
andee3000
Lol gaytek. I work for an ISP, most issues we get from business customers are solved by stripping that shit out.
tad9001
What issues do you see? What do you replace them with?
andee3000
Mostly path MTU discovery. If we replace them, Mikrotik. Otherwise we point the customer to a IT company to sort them out.
tad9001
Been told good things about mikrotik
andee3000
They're pretty good. Carrier grade features even on the smallest boxes. They also do the OS as a VM image you can run in GNS3.
tad9001
Main issue with them is change anything and they want a reboot. But at this price point I can live with it
HeikkiKikkelsson
What is the estimated cost invested into all that? Strictly tech speaking. Time invested i bet is a whole different story.
jmricker
Better than my setup...
tad9001
Prime candidate for a IKEA hacking project. Is that a 3com?
jmricker
It is actually
jmricker
I did have an Ikea side table I used to mount/hold most of my equipment but I got tired tearing it down to add in a new thing
tad9001
EBay used wall rack?
Saj5211
@OP I was wondering whether you are able to control you devices from anywhere or are you restricted to the proximity of your house
tad9001
I other than VPN. I have no inbound ports open on local firewall.
tad9001
I have not opened HA up to internet access, so only over a VPN connection. Some other smart devices are cloud controlled.
AtsaMattaForYou
Any recommendations for a cheap wifi camera that's not locked down? Can be viewed with VLC using rtsp or similar?
tad9001
Honestly no. I have a canary that I now hate due to recent restrictions and price plans
tad9001
Integrating cameras into home assistant can be fun as you end up having to install ffmpeg libraries and trying to figure out random bits
AtsaMattaForYou
If I can find some cheap wifi cameras I was going to give Zoneminder a try https://zoneminder.com
tad9001
That sounds like a great little project. My wife will kill me if I install more cameras or spend more money
tad9001
You will probably find a decent set of geeks on redit who can advise. Or Google some reviews
tad9001
Have traditional axis poe wired network cameras that are great. And some old Panasonic's which were great when I got them.
tad9001
I have 4 arlo pro cameras on free tariff. Totally love them as on battery so no cables. Reachnxt is good
Shamorza
@OP, what is this smart home thing & what does it do? You buy it like a package or do you need to put it together yourself? Serious question
tad9001
So I have integrated multiple smart home systems and devices and other services in one place. So all my stuff talks to a single hub.
tad9001
Lots of text config files. OpenHAB is another open-source competitor. I run hassbian rather than hass.io. hope that answers it?
Shamorza
Yes thnx, At least I know what to search now.
tad9001
The open-source project/code is called home assistant https://home-assistant.io/ is rather technical and installed on a raspberry pi.
Trumpinator08
Hackers be like...
Yes full remote access to the house.
tad9001
Not really, no inbound access. Home Assistant hub is local network only
Trumpinator08
A local network that is still emitting a wireless signal. Depending on the type of devices his using the signal can be easily identified
FirstInLine
https://media.giphy.com/media/gGuOldphm6vzW/giphy.gif
tad9001
Will also dust off old snort box. Although I was hoping recently I could cram into s RPI. Server rack powered down long ago
tad9001
Agreed, but us a little tin foil hat. Will now enable 802.1x authentication and vlan the network with own firewall rule base.
Trumpinator08
And penetrated just as long as your in range. Also you can just plug in directly an have some fun with your friends house.
TheScottishRonSwanson
That seems extensive..... u should invent an all in 1 system
fluortanten
That's boring
potshot
Actually almost all industries are moving towards distribution in nearly everything.
MrStealYourGiF
Well you can get some that combine functions, but they're usually literally retarded, locked down to small features sets, vendor lock in etc
DoctorDelta
https://xkcd.com/927/
NuClearFuRy
The problem with all in one is if the device fails you lose everything, here if a device fails it's only that portion if security
nclu
3 systems + all-in-one system = 4 systems (basically works on the xkcd "standards" principal https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/standards.png )
MetaSomma
Was gonna link that

Jack of all trades=master of none.
geofferson86
Jack of all trades master of none oftentimes better than a master of none...
KeyClavis
No. All in 1 systems are too inflexible. When tech changes you gotta swapout the whole thing rather than just a module.
mybrothersmario
also all in one systems tend to be far more costly.
ThrowAwayAcct0000
I got an Echo for Christmas, and wanted to try home automation. Several days of research later, I decide I'm going to wait a few years.
tad9001
Constant evolution. Get some lights and power switches to play with
mybrothersmario
Get some Sonoffs for about $5 each, shove 'em behind existing switches and boom, $6 smart switch, even better if you flash Tasmota on 'em.
mybrothersmario
They also work well with Home Assistant, at least I'm assuming that's what that pi is running.
tad9001
After flashing them. Yes hass on that rpi
tad9001
If only I was so smart.
TheFreedse
But that wouldn't be just as fun to set up. It's the journey not the destination
TheScottishRonSwanson
Smarter than me I still use the old universal system... I just had kids and make them do all the shit I don't want too
acme64
im missing hardware for that option
WatcheroftheWays
Well you could do what I have been thinking of. Buy a half rack, move all my hardware into rack storage, one place for all my machines
tad9001
My rack is turned off. Looking at low energy solutions. Home office full of junk too.
WatcheroftheWays
Really I just want a half rack so I can put all of my stuff in one place, tower, router, firewall, etc. As it stands its spread all over.
booksuggestionsandamateurpornography
Hey op, what does all that stuff do?

tad9001
You presume I am exciting in the slightest. But I get you. 1984
ourari
You don't have to be exciting. We're all being farmed for data, even the boring ones. It's how Google and Facebook make their money.
tad9001
Nothing in life is for free. Shame all I see are broken links at worst
ourari
Yeah, I just wish I had more of a choice in how I pay for things. Until then, block all the things!
tad9001
I guess the issue Is, no one wants to pay. So they make profits elsewhere
ourari
Take Imgur, for example. While browsing here, Facebook, Google, Amazon, and a few others are tracking you to target ads.
ourari
But I know I'm preaching to the choir, because I see your PiHole ;)
tad9001
And tor proxy. I feel dirty now knowing you have seen my pihole
PiGiSpi
I see a hue bridge, one of the best investments ever
Pixiepepper90
I love mine!! Although bulbs are pricey. Lighting in my apartment is £600+ lol.
tad9001
Yes have spent a fortune on hue. But over the last year and a half. Amazon always had deals. My hub works flawlessly with 30plus bulbs
tad9001
Works fine with innur bulbs, yet to test with IKEA ones
kuraiholy
kuraiholy
That was just the beginning. Added color bulb front center, LED strips behind couch/infront of desks. Strip behind TV too.
kuraiholy
So freaking addicting when you start getting into it. Ended up buying a razer keyboard so now a ult in Overwatch gives us seizures.
IMightBeLyingRightNow
So damn ugly. please don't be offended I'm sure it took a lot of work, but leds are the worst part of gaming atm. they're stuffed everywhere
IMightBeLyingRightNow
At this point I'd pay 2x the price if everything was black or gray with just the logo of the company in a slightly different contrast...
PiGiSpi
Same! Though it was my razer keyboard that inspired me to get the lights!
StarryPlough
What is your job/illness? This sounds like work in itself
tad9001
IT Geek/consultant. Chrones disease is my pain in the arse
jandeeg
Linking IBD to arse. Well played!
tad9001
Yes it's gutless old me trying to be funny
RHFiesling
check out "Pain free foods" comes across a bit odd at first, but is well worth the read & money imho. Might be applicalbe 2 u or not. but1/2
RHFiesling
2/2 changed my life for sure. Not with Crohns but I suggested it to ppl with Crohns & they did well 2. Your docs opinion stays paramount tho
tad9001
Am on low fiber diet. Is part of the reason I have been out of action so long. No pain, no symptoms of relapse = deficiency and body down
RHFiesling
? why is a low fiber diet keeping you out of action? if its part of the treatment, should it not help you forward? only Curious here
tad9001
It masked my relapse. Also inflammatory markers in bloods no longer show. MRI of small bowel only works now.
tad9001
Low fiber also means no obstructions. First I knew was when body started to shut down and was not even obvious why
