Tell him the truth. It isn't that the cat likes him. Give a cat a treat and they like you. This cat TRUSTS him. You have to prove yourself by your demeanor. That cat knows they are in good hands. I feel like that would be more important for him to know. The cat sees a good person.
You can give cats all the treats you want & they might not like you. They might like the treat - but cats are definitely choosy about who they like, & who they trust. Either way, what a lovely experience, to have a cat get on your knee & purr for the first time.
I like how my friend’s cat almost always chooses to rest atop me because my body temperature just naturally runs hotter than others. It’s funny how people are like, “Wow, he must like you to keep picking you.” LOL no, I know cats and they love to nap on the warmest things.

It can be smell or other factors. One of my voids loves the smell & texture of beards. Turns into a big flirt.
They also can tell when people don't want to be near them and choose to lay on those people because cats are huge trolls. A cat will choose my allergic aunt over anyone else in the family.

But this is because of what commenter said: when you "avoid them" (not calling, not staring, not looking) they take it like friendly language and get closer to those people faster than those doing all of them (too intrusive).
Having a cat choose you is sort of like when avatar gets chosen by those magic milkweed seed looking floaty things, except it doesn't mean you eventually get laid by a super hot blue monkey-chick who's all impressed.
