He learned on a qwerty, this is a backup when other devices aren't available. So, he would have to learn another method and my guess is him being non-verbal, it would be best to just go with what he knows.

I read up a bit on facilitated communication, I don't see how someone could get a long form answer out of someone, maybe a yes/no/something else answer, but not much more. the similarities between FC and an Ouija board are about the same.

This is correct that it would help but I'd also suggest using your phone. I use English to Spanish constantly when I live in Mexico. It has helped me learn Spanish tremendously.

I'm thinking a printed "sleeve" you can wear when you're caring for a non-verbal person with special needs. In fact... I'm thinking maybe getting some for several of my family members. This is an EXCELLENT idea. He has a tablet, but it's not always with him.
