When you're in the hospital, any metered dose inhaler or medical supplies we use are supposed to be thrown away when you discharge. There are licensing discrepancies between inpatient pharmacies and outpatient pharmacies. I sometimes get really confused and throw medications away into trash cans that, now that I think of it, really look like my patient's purse. But no, I always follow the law, of course.

My mom worked in the lunch room middle school until she retired a few years ago. She regularly bought coats for kids who came to school with none. She started buying "cool" shoes like DC and Vans and traded them with kids who she thought could use a new pair. She's a good mom.

I think you're right. "Orphan crushing machine" is absolutely one way to look at it, but another way is "it takes a village to raise a child". As long as there are kids with rough homes lives (which we should also try to prevent!), teachers and schools should be empowered to help pick up a little of the slack.

The idea of orphan crushing machine is to point out that highlighting good individuals doesn't change the system causing the problem Grandma feels responsible for fixing. The idea that this would be a regular problem means we have a child poverty problem. I'm glad gramma is a good person and pulling kids out of the orphan crushing machine, but she shouldn't have to. She should be able to devote that love and generosity elsewhere

The elementary school I work at briefly had a classroom that had a shower in it. There were a pair of brothers who were able to use it when they "got extra dirty in a class activity."

When my former roommate was a junior high teacher, she bought new sneakers for a kid whose shoes were in absolute shreds and had her aide give them to him with some made-up story that kept her name & the aide’s out of it.

Charity with dignity, a great combination. Someone who was obviously homeless, by his looks, was in front of me at a convenience store. I simply tapped him on the shoulder and told him, "I believe you dropped this." And handed him "his" $20 bill.

The problem is that the systems end up taking people like grandma for granted. Teachers and nurses are EXPECTED to go above and beyond, and to make financial and personal sacrifices because "think of the children!"
Then the administrators pocket large sums while putting up banners reading, "Heroes work here!" Ugh.

If anyone wants to be like grandma? Talk to your local schools about creating a school laundry room/“clothes store”. It allows kids w/out laundry at home (for whatever reason) to do their laundry at school. Or just take home laundry soap, if they have a washer but no funds for soap. Then, running a “thrift store” of clothes for kids to trade in outgrown still usable clothes for bigger ones (easiest if your school uses uniforms).

I wish I had school breakfast. I was instead put in charge of caring for my step siblings. Wake them up, made sure they got ready for school, and made breakfast. This started when I was like in 4th grade. I left home after 7th grade. It was nice to be a "kid". Step mom had to wake up and handle it herself after I left. They were late to school for 3 months or so I heard.

I've been a teacher in the public education system in the US for roughy 17 years. More often than not, my kids were AWESOME. It was their parents that were the shitty ones. BTW, since we have Amish near us, DHS can't remove a kid from a house because of no plumbing or power because it's a 'lifestyle choice.'

My mother was an elementary school librarian in north alabama cotton country. I spent decades scrounging computer parts for her computers. When she retired, I had converted the remains of five computers into that one single windows 95 computer that could run the library printer. Those five appeared when a parent came to complain, and ended up buying and donating five computers instead. I spent one week each summer helping with library inventory. Alabama schools are POOR.

Im always strengthened by good deeds. I feel theres still hope. But if i was that kid, oh shit this old lady keeps spilling water on me. However im thankful she is loving and caring and always apologising and giving me food. I dont need to learn how to steal and learn how to fight and grow up to be an angry young man..

A Hispanic lady and daughter that me and my wife met on vacation, the mother worked still as a teacher in the greater Chicago area and her daughter was a teacher at college. She finally you tired a couple of years ago at the age of 70. I don't know how she had the energy to do that for so long in your city school. She still gets piles of Facebook messages from former students of hers

I worked at preschools for 10 years... just got beat down by administration. I had kids who hadn't had baths, didn't have clean clothing, etc. I'd buy clothes from goodwill, have the kid change clothes, and wash during nap at the school's washer. I couldn't do a bath, but we had "salon" days where we washed hair. Baby shampoo from the dollar store, but better than nothing. Life is hard, I just hope they felt good.

I had a lot of fun teaching, but I got so depressed and anxious just trying to run my classroom on nothing. It was so hard coming up with learning experiences with almost nothing. I now know why Montessori is so popular (it's a good school of learning in small doses)
