Why a film might use these:
1. They aren’t unpredictable, so they’re much safer.
2. Not needing to pay for and use animal rules and regulations.
3. You don’t need to feed or pay the animal actors.
4. They don’t get tired, injured, or sick.
5. Actors can focus on acting and not focus on what the animal is doing.
6. Actors with allergies won’t need a doctor to manage said allergies.
7. You won’t need to pay for a vet and stable.
8. No need for a trainer.
9. Actors don’t need riding lessons.
10. The production aren’t restricted to filming a maximum amount of hours with them. (Animals have strict laws surrounding them.)

The list is very extensive..

I want a pinto

they look a little fake. But I am all for animals being treated kindly.

11. Keeps horses and other actors in line knowing their legs will be chopped off if they don't act their best.

Amputee animals need work too!

God damn sexy horse wiggle

How about mechanical actors that don't demand mega K $ for doing simple stage work. Shoud bring cinema & DVD prices down (as well as Netflix & Amazon Prime subscriptions!)

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That doesn't sound like it will increase shareholder value enough. Mechanical actors... but keep prices the same. :P

'Oh! So they're for 'Riding' on the saddle! Guess I don't need all this lube...' ☹️

I know that they literally cant die in a movie but I will still cry if they do

Better this than CGI

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's not what it's for, and CGI might be better in a lot of situations. These horses do not look good to anyone who has been around them; but they're used for close-up shots when ex. two cowboys are riding side-by-side and you more need the movement and clips of the saddle might come in. But with CGI you could add an actual realistic head and movement afterward.

Four of them. Just enough for an Apocalypse. I just got an idea for Halloween.

Yeah, well this is all fine and good BUT…

Imagine if The Lord of the Rings had been filmed with fake horses.

That is all.

Another fun fact:

The horse that portrayed Brego was a Dutch Warmblood named Uraeus. Viggo Mortensen developed a strong bond with Uraeus during filming and purchased him after the production was completed along with two other horses.

Fun fact:

The producers couldn’t find enough local men proficient in riding horses locally, to play the needed amount of warriors. But there were a LOT of girls who loved riding horses.

So most LOTR scenes with horses, have a high percentage of female warriors. Horse girls, to the rescue!!!!

You don't know if those weren't used. Mechanical Horses like those are for Dialogues. You mostly see the upper body of the Actor while he is "riding". While the real riding scenes, especially in Armor, are done with real horses and often with stunt actors.

I love how gentle either actor is with the animal.

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't know there could be an uncanny valley for animals.

11 months ago | Likes 282 Dislikes 2

They're beyond distracting for me. Filmmakers have used real animals for 100+ years. These coin-op kiddie rides look ridiculous.

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You think humans are not animals?

11 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Ya, their eyes are weird.

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good enough for out of focus or replaced by vfx but the lack of blinking makes it weird

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mechanical (or digital) + eyes is where folks run off with uncanny valley logic

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's the lack of legs that gives it away.

11 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That's what a pug does to me. I'm not sure if it's alive or some kind of poor taste animatronics joke.

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it is more a kind of "how are they alive? they must be sick, avoid, AVOID" thing.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With my ignorance of real horses, unless I'm staring intentionally at the face it looks real to me.

11 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Why the long face?

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good enough for background horses, probably not for main character close ups

Years ago, I saw an advert with an anamatronic beagle. It was a *very* good model. Too good. The instant I saw it, my lizard brain screamed ZOMBIE DOG and I recoiled in horror.

Lay off the 8 days at Freddy's!

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd love to see this zombeagle. Do you remember anything else about this ad?

11 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

You know, I can remember thinking at the time, 'Jesus, did they use a dead dog to make that thing?'
