Makes me realize my parents belong to the category of shitty parents

TL/TR - I had shitty parents and feel very lonely right mow. I would love to have a home and finally have a family.. but Im too broken at this point.

. i.e. just a few examples

* My mom used to leave me alone in the car while she went to get groceries. Full carts loads of groceries (not just a quick purchase)

* Beat me up with a hanger until her stress/strength were released. Left me all bruised many times.

* Once drove me and my dog to a river just outside the suburb and left the dog there. I cried loudly as she drove away and dog dog running behind the car. She was laughing, as if it was hilarious.

* She even told my 1st grade teacher to hit me if I wasn’t good... and I quote “you have my permission to hit her” - I remember those words because she said them in front of all my classmates.. they all laughed at me and took that as permission for them to bully me from then on... And since the teacher had my mom’s permission, she never did anything... she actually hit me too

*My mom always allowed my dad to be abusive and offensive with me. I grew up with him pointing out how ugly and stupid I was on a daily basis. can you imagine a child getting this treatment from the ones that are supposed to protect you? His insults became more harsh and R rated as I grew older

* When I was 19, old enough to work, she would lock me in and hide the key, because she didnt. Want me to work... my guess is she didnt want me to have enough moneys to move out and leave.

It took me many years to get the courage and money to go somewhere. She created an environment for me to always feel insecure and afraid of her enough not to move out sooner. She gaslighted me and made everyone of my friends and family give me peer pressure and made me feel like I was a bad ungrateful daughter.. she always had the ability to portray herself as a sweet innocent victim and me as a rebelious daughter... while it wasn’t the case at all.

I didnt party much.. didint have a boyfriend until I turned 24. Didnt drink alcohol until I turned 28 and I have always lived with severe depression, not knowing why I have been so depressed... i suspect a big part of it is because of how bad they were with me... I hide my depression very well and I look like a happy human being that has her shit together, but in reality I feel very lonely and I wish I had a home and supportive family to spend the holidays with.

Meanwhile I have some people tell me that my parents didnt know any better and that they did their best. That they are still my parents and loved me in their unique way and Im supposed to love them back...... am I crazy for thinking this is bullshit?!? Someone that loves you is not supposed to treat you this way.... sorry for such a shitty post. I dont have anyone to talk to about this.

EDIT: thank you all for your kind words and support. I am aware that others had it worse, and Im grateful for at least being alive. I grew up thinking that all these things were normal, until now that I talk to others or see posts of shit parents and realize that this is not normal at all. I dont know why its still a daily struggle to put a happy face. Im working on it.... im getting better. But the holiday season makes me remember all of it again.... I guess it could have been worse.

The Imgur community has been a tremendous help.

Much appreciated. Cheers to you all .

You dont have to love family. Toxic is toxic it would be best to distant yourself from that. You'll do much better trust me

You're not crazy. If a woman is being abused by a husband we don't look twice when she leaves him. She had a choice, kids don't with parents

Keep them out of your life because they will drain you, they are shitty parents who don’t deserve you. Head up, chest out, deep breath!

100% bullshit. You got fucked over hard.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Your parents did not do their best. At all. They were bullies. They hurt you to make themselves feel better. Distance yourself from them.

Left a similar situation at 17, plus sexual abuse. 30 years later, only now getting therapy. For you reading this. GET THERAPY NOW! 1/?

I mean it, you are worth it. Don't think that just because you are coping, you are alright. Talk it out with a trained professional. 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Hello, my mom would tell everyone how badly she wanted me dead. Realized last year how abusive they both were and am in therapy 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Find help if you can too, it's a long process but you don't have to accept their behaviours. Believe in what you feel is right, be strong

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Holy shit, how can everybody have failed you so severely. Even the fucking teacher. This is def not normal or love. Burn all the bridges,

Seek therapy (or maybe something like a priest or (online) support group) and love & take care of yourself. You did a incredibly brave thing

Getting out. Hats off to you

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I feel you and hope you’re ok. That’s so tough and hard to remove yourself from. Just try to remember that it’s not your fault at all. <3

Some people suck

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

who says you can't divorce your parents......

6 years ago | Likes 136 Dislikes 3

This is super important, @OP you do not need to keep them in your life. going No Contact saved my life. If you're not already, look into it

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

Uh no, fuck em, you don't get to pick your parents but then you can move out and never see them again, pick a new family, get therapy <3

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

For the longest time I made excuses for my parent. You have my permission to cut the toxic fuckers out of your life.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can message me anytime you need someone to talk. My mom wasn't always the kindest of people. But never this level. I'm so sorry.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is just so terrible. I'm glad you got out of that situation and honestly I would build my own family. They don't have to be genetic.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Your parents were not 'doing their best'. You didn't deserve it. It wasn't your fault. Get therapy. Never feel like you owe them anything

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I went through a lot of that. Deep seated hate of almost everyone and bad anxiety and panic attacks and depression.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also a kid of a shitty parent, feel free to talk to me if you want to :)

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

But they're gone yes? Make a new family. You can't be all broken because you have desires and you're talking about it. Take time and find

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

More strength. You don't have to hurry. Just be good and take care of yourself.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sounds like you were unlucky to grow up with a psychopath or a sociopath. Mom is a title that is reserved for those who really want the

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

absolute best for the children they are raising, no strings attached. You don't owe your toxic parents anything.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seek help and advice from a local domestic abuse advocacy service or a help line. They will know what to do.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That can not be love. Redefine love for yourself. Shitty people have kids and in turn are shitty parents. Rid yourself of them.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Those who said that your parents did their best or that they didn't know any better are just as disgusting as your own parents.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it baffles me that people try and make excuses for people that you've known all your life. Sometimes outside perspective does put >>

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>> things in context, but if you have an SOP for their shitty behaviour, that's beyond "oh maybe he's stressed at work and doesn't mean it."

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The 140 type limit makes it where I can't express my overall hatred to those who treat others in this regard and think nothing of it.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I hear the "but they're family" a lot, and I suspect the people who say it can't imagine not being loved by their parents.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

your parents were shit. don't contact them ever again

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ugh!!! I’m so sorry!! You didn’t have parents, those were monsters.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I always see so many story's on here about horrible toxic familys , I'm so thankful to have a amazing mum, sure my dad's a bit of a twat-

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But my mum raised me and she is a wonderful humen

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They could not do better, but that doesn't mean you are supposed to love them. Whatever you feel is okay.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hiya. Also a kid of shitty parents, but a little further down the road of recovery. Please feel free to reach out if you're feeling alone 1/

6 years ago | Likes 320 Dislikes 0

2nd here too...sounds like yours is a functioning psychopath too. Couple websites I found that help are flyingmonkeysdenied.com & (1/)...

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

... psychopathfree.com They're good places to start if you can't afford therapy. Helps to see you're not alone or crazy, there's a name (2/)

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

...for the crazy-making things done to you. This was my 1st x-mas w/out my gaslighting mom & her flying monkeys so I know how you feel, (3/)

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

...but the loneliness is a temporary & necessary step for the sake of finally standing up for your health & self-respect. We'll get thru ok.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Or upset, or just want someone to talk to. Their bad decisions are not your life sentence. Things can, and will, get better. The offer 2/3

6 years ago | Likes 118 Dislikes 0

Wow. The shit I thought was normal blows my mind. Makes me hate my mom more on the daily

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I was 20, yup, TWENTY when I had the great epiphany that what I feel is /real/. It was like, WAIT, YOU ALL KNEW THIS ALREADY?! NOT FAIR! heh

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Applies to anyone reading this, and if you can't open up just yet, I come equipped with an infinite amount of terrible dad jokes. 3/3

6 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 1

I don't know you commenter but thank you for this, after the holidays I really needed to hear this again

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's hard not to feel trapped by their bad decisions

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Do you mean jokes about terrible Dads?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You can choose your own family. They dont have to be blood related. A lot of times those people take advantage.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They think they can be horrible without consequences because their family. Dont be afraid to cut them off. Rip it like a bandaid.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you ever get your dog back?

6 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

No. I remember looking at her through the rear window as she desperately ran to catch up to us, until she was no longer visible...

6 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Fuck that is so sad. Jesus, I'm sorry.

6 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Nooooooooooo. What a psychopath to have done that

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I have several friends who were abused. I can comprehend hitting your kids because that's all you know (not at all acceptable, but I can 1/

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

at least understand), and with physical abuse I could certainly see a role to figure out how to forgive. What she did with your dog was evil

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

There is no forgiveness, no "I didn't know better." She caused an innocent creature pain / death to watch you in pain. That's a sociopath.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I agree. She says that I looked very funny when I cried. Thats some sociopathic tendency there.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I absolutely guarantee if ANYONE gives you a line of BS about forgiveness, tell them that story. They will instantly shut the fuck up.
