I use a VPN to connect to my work desktop when I work remotely, but I prooobably shouldn't use the company's VPN for torrenting and porn.

Double encapsulate with vpn on your router and vpn setup with software on your pc. But still won't stop someone if your pc security is lax.
ScienceExperiment
Most of the listed VPN services are required contractually - by law - to give up your browsing history when requested. Barely even a point.
[deleted]
HMA, Cyberghost, Norton and Hotspot all definitely do.

Note: Your ISP/workplace IT department/University can still see you are accessing content via a VPN, which may be a violation in itself.

Jesus, you wouldn't happen to have a copy of this in a better resolution. I can't read the small print
aayhan
I always thought VPNs were used so you could go on FB and shit on your phones at schools where you can't.
As an infosec guy, oh god, this is horrific. There's way too much bad info in this infographic to be considered useful or sane.
runciterassociates
IT guy seconded.
Pughhead
Sure, needlessly waste money on a dodgy VPN and then get slower internet speeds!
flamingflamingo
The only thing I'd want to keep private is my personal information to prevent identity theft. Otherwise, not sure what people want to hide?
And a VPN can't even do that. People who buy into this VPN crap have no idea what they're doing and are mostly being screwed.
Yeah this whole thing sounds like a scam to trick torrenters into installing trojans or sending their info to third parties.
LvAllen
But which of these are honeypots from the MPAA?

It does? I tried using a proxy with it too and read that it sometimes doesn't actually use the proxy you configured. Shady

You have to watch the "peers" tab. It's supposed to show the proxy IP, but it shows your real IP.

Any opinions on VPNs with lifetime memberships for one price? Sounds like a scam or just shit quality to me.
You're wasting your money. Bandwidth and infrastructure costs money forever, not just once.
craigersmagoo
Unless the provider is doing packet inspection to find PII and prevent it's transmission over the internet, don't bother with a VPN at all.
MidiArbite
PII?
Personally identifiable information (your address, credit card numbers, social security number, etc.)
TheCrowFather
Don't list to PII guy. VPNs are good for preventing someone from snooping on your internet traffic. Particularly in public wifi
Jackster22
Creating or using a VPN does not hide you. It just moves you to another location. People can still hack you and see what you are doing.
Yeah, this infographic is so horrifically misguided it hurts my brain. I feel bad for people who don't know any better and act on it.
It is the same on YouTube where they have done 5 min research and come out with all these statements about it being secure. When it is not.
The only real use for these now is end to end encryption between networks and access the internet when inside a controlled/censored network.
SMiThaYe
Or if your ISP is throttling streaming services as happened with my last provider, turn VPN on and I'm back to full speed.
I bunched stuff like this under "controlled network". But yea, pisses me off. Luckily I am on decent network and don't suffer that.
You should also never trust a VPN service provider. They can get hacked and could be using you for their own gain...
A VPN is just a conduit for your internet traffic. Unless the service is doing packet inspection and preventing services from using PII (1/2
all you're doing is sourcing from a different IP.

Misinformation and setup only covers Windows, iOS and Mac? Sweet.
As much as I support privacy and freedom of speech, I don't think everyone should use a VPN.
It's very misleading. A VPN does not prevent acquisition of your data. There's simply a different IP address associated.
You're more secure, not secure. There's a massive difference. Secure means you can't be hacked/tracked etc.
You're not more secure unless you have a shitty ISP. You're just paying two times for one internet connection from two providers.
More secure means it's harder for people to hack/track whatever you.
Nothing is 100% secure, there's always a way, but you can make it harder for people to hack you or whatever if you need to
It also does nothing to keep you from being hacked or compromised. It just moves the point of ingress to somewhere else.
