Then, one day, a Michigander customer came in and we were talking and I did this to show where I was from and my coworker busted out laughing, saying how he thought I was kidding and in no way actually thought this was a thing.

If you are sincere, here’s an explanation. Michigan , minus the Upper Peninsula, is shaped like a mitten. To tell a person where you are from, you can use your hand to represent the state and point to the rough location of your city/town/village.
