The amateur status is that being an athlete is not the job of most Western athletes. They tend to have other jobs. Chinese athletes meanwhile are full-time employees of the Chinese state and paid accordingly. China was one of the nations that drove the professionalization of the Olympics as a means to create national prestige. That's also why every one of their athletes, just like with the Soviet Union, East Germany, North Korea, etc. is being forced to use performance-enhancing substances.

At the last summer Olympics I read somewhere about the gold medal shot put person working like 3 jobs because these games and competitions don't actually pay like normal sports. You get sponsorships if you win in a "cool" sport but that's it.

Newsflash: it is absolutely not "normal" for sports to pay millions, or even just living wages. Even with soccer, it's only the small minority of players in the top leagues who can live from it comfortably, and even most of those don't get the huge payouts you read about. Pretty much any job where popularity is a big factor inevitably leads to this: a tiny minority attracts to crowds and has money thrown at them, the vast majority dream of making it while starving.

I guess the thing is, to be able to compete at an Olympic level, those sports ARE jobs. So either a country should accept that they won’t even have a delegation, let alone any medals, or they should decide that they’re going to offer athletes fair compensation for the national pride and glory that they achieve. I mean there's a huge difference between having/promoting a sponsorship and having 2nd/3rd jobs (which MANY of the Athletes, especially women, do). Most sponsorships require a time commitment of like 20-40 hrs/year. But sure, we could argue athletes shouldn't have to do sponsorships either. That's a fair take
