My favourite was the guy doing like 90 on city streets, a truck ahead pulls out and immediately brakes because they realized they completely misjudged the guy's speed, of course the bike eats it and he's mad that they "didn't commit" to the turn

I'm not totally sure, but a quick pause shows the speedometer reading 157 (what I believe to be ) kph. That's about 98mph, going around that blind turn. I believe everyone else already covered that these riders were foolish. I just wanted to confirm it numerically. Also, I haven't ridden in some years, but isn't braking on a turn typically a really, REALLY risky endeavour?

4 seconds to react is ridiculously high. 12/4/2 is supposed to be your visual scan, two seconds ahead of you for immediate threats (like an intersection), 4 seconds ahead of you for longer range threats (like the car in front of you) and 12 seconds for longer term threats so you can plan for them.

That 4 seconds to react is critical. I have to take a yearly driving course for work, and that's something they stress constantly, especially for the drivers of the heavy trucks. Your brakes, tires, and suspension can be top notch. But one of the major constants will always be your ability to start breaking, analyze if that will be enough, and adjust accordingly.

Only one reason I support self-driving cars. Properly installed, set up, and fault-proof sensors are lightning fast compared even to the fastest, most alert human, and most of the drivers on the road are VERY far from that.

So in my opinion, self-driving cars are a good start provided there’s good data/research to go with it. It’s also one area I’m willing to let AI into as hopefully it’ll enhance the computer to learn more and more about how to handle safe driving. But I think one of the biggest things that will help self-driving is for cars to be able to communicate with each other. Think of it like if the car in front brakes, it’ll automatically send out a signal to other cars around it and react accordingly.

I ride to commute, and this shit is why I don't do group rides. I have a little versys 300, it can do the speed limit everywhere I want to go, but not much more. I'm content just cruising the back roads to town and home again, getting great mileage

Except it does. The odds of being killed on a motorcycle in general is 37x more than if you're in a car. But if you eliminate idiots - DUI, stunting, excessive speeding, riding without a license, riding without training, riding without protective gear, the odds go down to 1.8x more likely. Still almost double but FAR FAR less than the general population of idiots.
I know plenty of old guys (I'm one myself) who have never had a serious accident in decades.

When I went through my Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course before I got my Motorcycle License, the instructor was checking everyone's ID before the class started, he noted that my license said I was an organ donor, I replied that they don't call it a "donorcycle" for nothing.

I've always hated that a corpse's organs can't be harvested indiscriminately. The laws should change so that any dead body can have its organs harvested to save the lives or ease the suffering of people who're STILL ALIVE. That doesn't mean the body is "desecrated", they just yoink whats needed & close it up in a perfectly presentable manner for an open-casket funeral. The trouble with that is that the human condition is a self-serving sickness. While I'd like to believe that every surgeon is a good surgeon who will genuinely make sure their patient is, in fact, already dead before harvesting the organs, there are plenty of cases in which that simply wasn't true. I do believe that organ donation should be an opt-OUT system instead of opt-in, broadly legalizing harvest could potentially broadly legalize murder.

Except there's been plenty in instances where people have been on the brink of having their organs harvested only to have the operation stopped at the last second. What's to think there haven't been instances such operations weren't stopped in time? Furthermore, humanity in general has a track record of using minorities' bodies against their will and already doing similar in the past. To think a person can not fall victim to having their organs erroneously harvested is wishful thinking at best.

Some of us have conditions or have family history that makes us ineligible to donate… my mom died of CJD and until recently I was not eligible and neither were my kids. They changed the rules recently, I know I can donate blood now and I think I can donate organs too… but I want to get a lot more use out of them first!

Apparently Arizona is opt-out. Found that out when my eldest got their lisence. I saw the endorsement and complimented them on the choice. They told me that was the default.

Some countries do this and it’s great. Turns out most people don’t have strong feelings either way, so most are happy to accept the default. Those who do have traditions or beliefs or concerns can still opt out.

Considering that one case where a donor body was used as a test dummy and exploded, I'd rather not create a law-enforced endless supply of corpses for people to fuck with. If dead person = guaranteed human body, people become worth more dead than they are alive. Not something I want to encourage in the current 'human capital' era.
That said, I have no objection to the opt-out approach rather than the opt-in approach. If people care enough they can opt out, otherwise they're donors.

Countless people suffering from horrific diseases, cancer, liver & kidney failure where they have to be on horrible dialysis machines, people in need of transfusions but there's no plasma, people waiting for hearts, lungs and so on. Instead, I'll argue that here, first responders & ER doctors are completely separated from transplant teams; their only legal and ethical duty is saving life. Further, making donation universal literally eliminates organ scarcity, which immediately destroys any perverse incentive for the state or doctors to "let someone die."
