Bar owner's name is Moe

How many times are you going to quote the title of the article that is right there that we can all see. People do this all the time and it drives me nuts, we get it, you can read.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

"...one of the nation’s 21 few remaining lesbian and queer women’s bars."? What kind of sentence is that? Either use 21 or few, not both.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

i think its to hype up that 21 is a low amount over all. with how big the nation is youd think there would be more tbh. while for grammar it may suck, but for a news article that wants to grab your attention tho... its a good way to get some peoples emotions going to keep them invested

Not a hate crime, sure, it was 'accidental'. As in, someone accidentally gave the homeless dude a can of gas, matches, and 20 bucks.

Why some people are so bothered by the sexual preferences of others is beyond me. How does the thought of two women scissoring in the privacy of their own home affect you so much that you want to commit arson to spite them?

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

According to the lesbians I've heard from, scissoring is pretty much just for porn.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was stated in the article that the perpetrator was a mentally ill homeless person, and that there was no indication of it being a hate crime.

Humans have a weird obsession with things that disgust us. We often become obsessed with it. And when you're taught to focus on sexuality as this special kind of bad, naughty, evil thing (because focusing on any of the really important sins would make the rich unhappy), it makes you obsess pretty hard.

A mixture of religious propaganda, repressed shame, and mental health disorders.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This time, it seems like the place being a lesbian bar might be coincidental. Haven't seen anything about comments made by the arsonist himself, but apparently staff and the owner were surprised it was him.

Arsonist with history of Mental Illness tried to burn down lesbian bar....there I fixed the title for you.

Don't forget there is also the unfortunate issue of how we treat mental health in this country.

Nothing screams USA more than violence, lack of public health and intolerance all rolled into shocking headlines

Is anyone else thinking of that simpsons meme? “Wait a minute. This lesbian bar only has one exit”

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 3

I can't say I'm surprised that Springfield has one of the fewer than two dozen lesbian bars in the USA. It has everything else, it seems.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's a Springfield in pretty much every state, so chances are pretty good.

Come on arsonist guy... we're all disappointed in you

there's always a Simpsons quote

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Is that right? There are less than two dozen lesbian bars in the entire country?

2 years ago | Likes 143 Dislikes 1

There's one right in my city down the street from where I bounce! My friend went and told me it's a nice scene, drinks are strong and sugary but that's kind of the vibe they're going for.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes but you don't need to worry about us bean lickers. it's just a result of changing times, dating apps, and general lesbian culture. but there's actually more out lesbians than ever and we're doing just fine.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A visible, persistent presence is needed if you want to push back on the fundamentalist Christo-fascists trying to literally outlaw your existence. Overtly lesbian destinations like bars or clubs or even restaurants or resorts gives you that, while creating a safe space you should be able to enjoy.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

well, visibility isn't gained through bars in the internet age. having a space to exist in where you know people have you back is important but i don't think bars are the place the majority of us want to patron on the daily. so, it's understandable that bars need to cater to more people and why we see general lgbt bars being the most successful with their event nights targeting different groups. idk.. personally, the evolution i wish for is lesbian gyms. 🤷‍♀️

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. Check out the lesbian bar project. I've been to three of them and all three have been super chill

2 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 1

Well, maybe if they were better about having fire exits...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well gay bars and just bars accept everyone, lesbian bars probably aren't too friendly to men

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I’m male and go to a lesbian bar. I have to leave? I’m just down to support, drink and enjoy the things we have in common like women.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not supporting to go invade their space and make people uncomfortable, they don't know why you're there

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get that but I just want to support by giving them money instead of going to flannigans. It’s so depressing inside flannigans

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You aren't supporting, money or not. you're literally the reason lesbian bars are almost extinct. I'm sure your intentions are good but you are going to a space that isn't for you and demanding that the people who feel comfortable there accept you. Whatever your intentions, you are invading a space that isn't for you so you can feel like you're supporting, but you're doing the opposite. They don't need your money they need their space.

The article says 21. Just the other night I saw Homer Simpson accidentally wander into a lesbian bar. Does that mean that there is in fact 22, or are we able to do a little detective work and find out where Springfield actually is?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yeah I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I too am confused. What’s the difference in just going to a gay bar? It’s not like the dudes will be hitting on you

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 14

You go to these bars either to hang out with friends or hook up with strangers. Why would you go fish in the lake if you want to catch a saltwater fish?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They probably feel much safer for a start. Not all men in gay bar are gay, some are bi... At the end of the day, if they want a fun night with no sausages around, a lesbian bar is better.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Having been to a few places with a gay presence (gay men and women) that weren't specifically a gay destination, I've seen them be very welcoming of women who clearly wanted to meet and be with women. Heck, even Disney World's old Pleasure Island had an unofficial 'gay night' (Thursdays), and you'd see women dancing with women, right alongside guys dancing with guys.

... Fuck... What was it before I wonder?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Back in the 80's there were around 200. Columbus Ohio had two within a block or so of each other for quite a while. Wall Street (I think that was it's name) shut down but Slammers is still open.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Cincinnati had 2601 a lesbian bar plus The Metro which was a mixture with female impersonators. There was also The Dock and Jockey Club as gay bars. No clue if they are still there but damn they played good music.

In my experience as a bi woman, gay bars tend to be more accepting of me being bi, whereas lesbians tend to be less accepting. I've been told by lesbians who have been burnt by bi curious women who then go back to men that they don't trust bi women. Also, I think straight women feel "safer" in a gay bar rather than a lesbian bar. IDK, it is rather curious to me as well.

My best friend was bi with strong lesbian biases. She got mistreated by lesbians because of being bi bad enough she went out to calm down and her otherwise small and easygoing GF ripped the lesbian verbally and cut her off (they had been friends up to that point). Because, yes, 'bi are not real lesbians'. Which, I mean, technically, sure?

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

It's a thin line to walk. I have a lesbian friend that calls me a lesbian and I'm like no, I'm bi. She swears up and down that I'm afraid to admit I'm lesbian. I came out at 51, if I were lesbian, that's what I would have come out as. I've heard stories like your best friend and I've had a few nasty things said to me. Whatever, it's not worth my time or energy to argue.

I'd never heard of straight women on Grindr, that makes no sense to me. I've been to MJ's in Dayton Ohio many times and I have noticed an uptick in straight women coming in. Seems like they are there mainly for the drag shows and appear to be respectful but I've not paid that close of attention to their behavior. Thank you for both links, definitely gives me something to ponder.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's hard to say exactly why straight women feel safer, other than they probably feel like there is less of a chance of being assaulted. Back in my early 20's my girlfriends and I would go to the local gay bar to dance. Maybe it was an illusion but I know we felt like we could dance and not have to worry as much. As to women not supporting their fellow women...have you met women?? 😉

They probably expect they won't be accosted in a gay bar (assuming no bi go there) where in a lesbian bar instead of fending flirty men they will be fending flirty lesbians.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a gay guy, that’s such an odd thing to say. I really don’t give a fuck what women look like. I don’t give a fuck what most guys look like either. Try hanging out with less judgy people, maybe

Gay bars, picture flamboyant and fun, are welcoming to everyone that's basically not mean. Lesbian bars can be like VFWs, unwelcoming to anyone different. They want the money, just you gotta "fit in" to what that bar wants. So they fail. Sad fact.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Really? Didn’t know that

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe some. My husband and I wandered into a lesbian bar in Toronto and nobody said anything to us. We had a beer, chatted with the bartender and moved on

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So what you're saying is if a woman walks into a gay bar, the gay patrons might say 'hey girl, what's up?', and if a man walks into a lesbian bar the lesbian patrons might say 'what the fuck are you doing here?'. Guess some lesbians don't know the difference between being a man hater, and a woman lover. Gay guys just want to be fabulous, one way or another.

I would think it's often more wanting to make it a space where lesbians, who are harassed and catcalled and hit on by men almost as much as straight/bi women, don't have to deal with any of that.

Because it really doesn't matter how obviously it is specifically a lesbian bar, to the point they could hang a big sign over the bar that says "MEN ARE NOT ALLOWED TO FLIRT WITH WOMEN AT ALL HERE", odds are likely that if a guy enters its because "lol lesbians are hot I wanna fuck em". 1/2

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But beyond that, as I understand there can be a lot of various schisms within the lesbian community, where they might want to exclude bi/pan women, trans women or nonbinary people, or lesbians that don't fit a specific vibe like no "lipstick" lesbians or "butch" lesbians or what have you.
