A few years ago, I was 'standing' on the surface of Mars courtesy of my Quest headset and a 360 image compile by NASA based on videos and images such as this one. It boggles my mind when I think of the effort and precision it takes to launch a robot from earth and land it on another bit of planetary rock that's 56 times further away than our moon.
Perseverance rover collects audio from Mars using two dedicated microphones, marking the first time a spacecraft has recorded the Red Planet's soundscape. These microphones have captured hours of ambient noise, including Martian wind gusts, rover wheel crunching, mechanical sounds, and Ingenuity helicopter flights.
Most likely just a mix of noise from the rover and the wind would be my guess. I believe the rover has a few microphones so it's just a recording of whatever sounds are around.
Generally it comes down to storage. The camera is good but they have to store so much video it is just set to record at a lower resolution. They are recording 24/7 and it adds up fast. Legally they need to keep months for most places. While a home setup you can delete it much sooner. So it doesn't clog you up.
Blame businesses that have refused to update their security for 30+ years. I’ve installed probably hundreds of 4K security cameras at this point, some with night vision, some infra-red, and the image quality is impressive.
I bought a system for my shop on Amazon for around $200. It works pretty good. I unplugged one of the cameras and that camera stopped working. Any idea what it could be
It could be any number of things. Some cameras don’t like it if their IP address changes. Some require a proprietary PoE injector to work, even if they’re connected to a PoE switch. Could be a manufacturing defect network issue. It’s hard to say from here.
Also, it’s not just an issue of the camera itself, but the data storage. Could all security cameras be 4K 60fps? Sure, if you’re ok with each hour of video needing 50GB. You’d need a 1TB drive for every day of footage, basically.
Honestly, 1080p 15fps would be fine for *most* things, especially if the cameras had a person/motion tracker to recognize people in weird places at weird times and use a higher res/higher fps recording for those.
Part of the issue is you need several cameras to cover all angles, each of which have their own footage you have to store, and for many security settings to be useful, you need to store the footage for weeks or months unless you're comfortable with only the last so-many-hours of video
The cameras are part of the things protecting the privacy. Knowing who took exactly what would be more helpful, not less. Any areas needing such levels of privacy that 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭 (such as eyes-only burn-after-reading documents) will simply not be read in a room with cameras and will be in covered envelopes or folders.
I have dealt with a bunch of customers that handled security footage from multiple locations, customers working for companies you have heard of. The reason they've always given is storage, not any sort of privacy.generally if there's a camera they're not super worried about privacy at all.

In short, everything other commenters say here is correct. They have limited daily bandwidth, and don’t need to constantly look at the robot, especially when using cameras that literally can’t see it clearly anyway.

The infrastructure to do so was extremely expensive at first, but getting an image from the rover to orbiter has no cost, and sending it back to the deep space network is also free. Maybe the engineers' salaries and maintenance costs to the DSN could be calculated in the cost but I don't think it's relevant here. It's just really really long to transmit big images.

So he just drops irrelevant information.

It's a big mosaic of many images. The blurry brown is areas that they didn't take images of. You're seeing all the pixels that were captured.
