Understand how upgrades and scaling works. Most of all have fun. It's just a game

Stick with one build. Don't start as sorcery then decide to try melee halfway through. Dying and getting lost is normal.

It was much more worth when the server were up (Demon Souls), but it's all a good experience. Controls and graphics are improved each game
