I’m not a lawyer but I work for an immigration law firm. I attend the firm meetings because I need to hear good news. People who are going through the legal process to gain legal status are released when detained. People are still getting green cards, T-visas & work permits. I hope this helps someone. Start the process to gain legal status if you haven’t already. Chinga la migra.

I live in an area in the Northeast with a very large “brown” community. We’re talking every country south of the border. They used proudly fly flags, have street festivals, gather for soccer matches in the local bars and restaurants. It’s a ghost town. Supermarket is empty. Bars and restaurants are empty. It’s only a matter of time before they raid job sites. I hate this administration.

Economic losses on massive projects like construction will result directly in higher costs to you personally - American or otherwise - because no massive/global business will accept losses when they have control over things like the prices for goods and services. As a former construction employee, shitty home construction are many factors. The two foremost are unrealistic timelines promised by general contractors and lack of training because quantity is more important than quality. Neither involved pay rate or citizenship.

One note, here in Texas, construction workers are paid pretty well these days. They are obviously not getting rich, but $25 an hour without papers and $35 an hour with papers is standard for unskilled construction in the Austin area. It goes up if you know a trade (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, tile, etc).
White people don't do it because it's brutally hard work.

Genuinely asking, is it brutally hard or are the workers just abused with impossible demands to cut corners and work at impossible speeds? Cause all I hear is how construction work just destroys your body and while the pay would be nice for us I'd very much like to enjoy my retirement if I get one.

Yes, there are some bad employers, but there is no getting around the physical demands. Obviously, some trades are more physical than others, but if you are just an unskilled laborer, then your day is going to involve a lot of picking up heavy things, carrying them over loose ground, and putting them down.
That said, it's not a bad career compared to many alternatives. Certified electricians in Austin can make $120K.

The labor itself isn't the brutal part, it's the hours you're expected to be there. When I was in commercial construction we worked "sun up to sundown Monday thru Friday, half days on Saturday."

I'm a union electrician up in Canada and from my perspective it's a bit of both. The obvious unavoidable wear and tear on the body comes from a certain amount of heavy lifting that can be reduced but not always fully eliminated, many times needing to get into awkward spaces whether it's tight ceilings to get into or working crouched down doing things on or near the floor. Most of those things can be reduced by having good working conditions (1/2)

The other part of the trades that can be hard on your health long term are the environmental factors. If the building doesn't have walls up you can be subject to both ends of the shitty weather spectrum. There is also the dirt and debris and air pollutants you can be regularly exposed to on job sites. Most of the products you can be exposed to daily are more harmful than stuff non trades people experience and when your exposure is just a passing whiff of paint fumes or your boots kick up (2/3)

Kick up a bit of concrete dust walking through that one part of the building, you kinda get used to it and ignore it but over the years those catch up with you.
Overall I think the job even with the kindest employer is going to be noticeably harder on the body than many other jobs. It's also something that is very needed in society. I think the best thing for trades people is to be well compensated in a way that we don't have to work in these tough jobs for a full 40 year career.
