They have their own investigations going on into that person. He knew who the guy was. The guy shooting the video has a storied history of finding predators and then refusing to turn over evidence to get them convicted, and then blaming the police for failing to convict them. He both wants to catch predators but also wants to make bad police look bad at the same time. I have zero issues with the former, or the latter, but when they diametrically oppose each other, he chooses the latter.

The problem with your unsourced story is that it makes zero sense. First off, we all saw him offering evidence. There was zero cost to the cop to take that evidence. So that claim sure seems like horseshit. Second, it is actually against the law to knowingly keep evidence of a crime from cops. So if he did that, they could arrest him. All the more reason the cop could have kept him talking. Lastly, we all literally watched him fist bump the dude. Is it normal to get cozy with pedophiles?

And why is he there, trying to do that? You think he was just independently overcome by guilt and did it by his own volition? What do you think happens if he gets a lawyer that starts arguing that the cops only have the phone and confession because a third party put him under duress? I don't know for certain, but that sure sounds like the kind of thing that makes evidence inadmissible in court.

And it doesn't matter at all if the phone was gathered under duress. The due process clause only bars the admission of a confession or statement only if state or government coercion was involved. The credibility of the confession would rightfully be called into question in court, but not the phone's... which is the key piece of evidence.

No. That would still count as governmental/state coercion because it was done at the orders of an agent of the state (the police). And before you ask: yes, the police could (and do) try to do it anyway and hide that they did.
There is no good legal reason for this police officer to not intake the professed phone into evidence. This is the police tacitly admitting that they do not plan to charge this predator for sexually harassing a minor.

Just to be clear I don't love how the cop handled this, but it sure seems like the guy was already under investigation. The cops primary concern in this scenario seems to be not givning the hunters an inch more than he needs to, which might be based on them possibly messing up said investigation.

The cop is correct to the extent that he can't arrest someone unless he sees them commit a crime OR he has a warrant for their arrest.
HOWEVER, there's no reason he can't question that guy and obtain his name, address, etc and whatever else he is willing to say without arrest. Instead, he's doing his best to make sure the guy walks.

This YouTube catch a predator stuff is not going to work the same state by state. I am personally all for it, but some states do not want random Internet people doing this surprise sting stuff. Some states won't even touch it. However it cuts I think you're correct, this incident should be documented. Where I worked we would take an initial information report and pass the case to a special victims unit detective. The cop in this vid appears to be avoiding the report/work. I don't like lazy cops.

If one of those is the one I'm thinking of, they caught the guy driving like a POS in the act - the cops saw him committing the crime and had tons of evidence from numerous people. Victims often blame them selves for the incident. Some just hope that the crime would just not exist and they try to forget it and think that it didn't happen if nobody knew ( it doesn't work). Some abuse victims don't realize they are victims, and then many fear (know) that they have to meet and talk to police like this, who don't care or even downright despise victims.

People can say anything under duress or if they are mentally ill, under influence of drugs and being suggested into confessing to a law enforcement officer.
There is no emergency, no life or property under threat, so no matter what the guy says, he has no grounds to arrest him based on confession alone. If evidence was presented in addition, that should change the scenario, but it seems that too is unlikely to happen in backwaters America
