The Mormons were incredibly racist and still are. However they were also hated by the US government. I hate to side with the Mormons but they actually had a vaguely similar experience to the natives. The natives had it way worse obviously but the US government were the main players in killing the natives

Mormons did their own kinds of ethnic cleansing. Not just from the end of a gun, but also through proselytizing and adopting (stealing) native children to raise white and LDS. Mormons had/have a huge drive to convert native americans as a way to reinforce their own doctrine as being 'True' since the Book of Mormon supposedly tells 'their' story of settling america after fleeing from isreal.

I used to believe in the whole prevalance of "settlers vs indians" but when you look any actual event up it's usually building tension, maybe even a few dead on either side, then the US army comes in and massacres the natives, or drives them away.

It documented that the early Mormon settlers wiped out whole villages of indigenous people. For two basic reasons, they wanted, (deserved) the land in the name of their savior, and the native people were less than human.
Locally, they killed the whole ( unarmed ) Koosharem tribe one night.
Natives of north America were not a warring people until white man came and started killing them. Fighting back became necessary for survival.
