I had another scam phone call at work. You know the ones - "Hello, how are you, sir? Good! I am calling from Microsoft technical support warning about scammers who are trying to take over your computer. OK? We need your IP address."
Then further down the line, if you are a dope and believe they are stopping scammers, you give them access to your PC and they delete files or ransom it back to you. Oh, the irony!
So usually I brighten my day by messing with them for a bit. Maybe put on a completely non-understandably-strong Scottish accent, lead the conversation in circles or whatever I can do to try and annoy them as much as they annoy all of us.
But yesterday a call took a new turn, and I'm still thinking about it. The call went as follows:
"Hello, this is Patrick. I am calling you today, about your computer." spoke Patrick, who was a weary sounding man, with a strong Indian or Pakistan accent.
"Hello Patrick, how can I help?"
"I am calling to say that there are scammers online who are trying to take over your computer." I am sure, the person who thought of this script, pretending to help with stopping scammers, received a big promotion. It's pretty common.
"I know EXACTLY what you mean, Patrick. There are lots of scammers online. There are also lots of scammers on the telephone. Isn't it terrible?..." Que dramatic pause, to see if he gets what I am implying. He does.
"Yes." Patrick spoke sadly. There was a very long pause, as I grinned and just waited to see if he would continue with the script, or just put the phone down, which are the two routes it usually goes at this point.
"I just want to say one thing to you." Patrick continued slowly, he sounded even more weary than before. "I am not like the others in the office here. Every day I look for a new, better, honest job. I pray for a new job. I look for a new better life, than this." he was getting choked up at this point, I was pretty shocked at the sudden intensity. I usually just mess with these callers and don't consider them as real people. Aside from bastard, crooked, preying, scam artist people!
"It is just so hard." Patrick continued, his words caught at times and I realised he was trying to hold back from crying "There are no jobs. It is so hard to provide for my family and provide for my children."
I really did not know what to say, I just replied with a lame "Thank you, for your honesty, Patrick... I am sorry to hear that."
"I hope you can find it in your heart to bless me and pray I find a better job?" Well, I did not see this call going like this!
"Sure. I really do wish you good luck and I hope you find a better job soon."
Patrick said "Thank you." in the most crushed and sad tone I have ever heard from a man, and put the phone down.
I can't think of an eloquent conclusion to write, apart from saying how it was a big shock to be hit with Patrick's reality on the end of the phone. How hard it must be to try to survive in some areas of the world.
I think I have become pretty good at ignoring the media when it covers how bad conditions are in some places overseas. But when a guy calls and tells me this while on the edge of crying, I'm feeling pretty bad for him and the whole situation over there.
'Patrick' will never see this, but if i could call him back, I would really like to talk to him about helping to get him a new job.

DICCHEESE247
Sucks for that dude. But I have no sympathy for someone that chooses to prey on others even if they are downtrodden. Cry me a river.
catsandcoke
He was trying to guilt you to get you to give him money just for his family.

It's "cue" not "que". "Cue the music!" for example or "I'll take my cue from the guy in front."

Watch kitboga on youtube, he trolls scammers. it's hilarious

But he took the job anyway. Theres no excuse. I feel nothing for these people
Julster
Imagine having to do the job you hate the most, and being hated for it.
FlashBambi
You heard all of that and didn't let him scam you? What a monster. Or maybe that's the scam... A scam within a scam.
Thelrishlnquistion
...scamception?
FlashBambi
koles
Thousands of people fall for it and lose everything. Don't spread pity for that pos or the scammer "job".
Snowtoes
Your reply was not lame, it sounds like you spoke from the heart. We need more of that.
XylaxLD
Reminds me of Kitboga, most of the scammers he talks to have supervisors hovering and cannot respond honestly. You had a unique moment
tablecloththermometer
Imagine before he hangs up, another voice in the back says “What were you just doing Patrick?” followed by a muffled “Help meee”
Webel
Oh guys listen to the Reply All episode about the indian call center, two parts. I think PJ flies over to Bombay, or was it alex..

That’s a damnable position to be in. In other news, your post looks slightly buggy. Have you noticed any unusual activity on your pc? DM me.

Mine went differently: “Don’t you have anything better to do than scam Americans?” Him: “No. I love it.”
Dep1213
Having taken multiple reports from elderly/vulnerable victims who have lost their life savings from these people I feel no sympathy for him.
drunkpanther
This one hit me. Bless you Patrick. May you find a thousand jobs that pay a thousand dollars a day, and get hired.
BlackTrashTiger
narniasreal
Even if it's true, that's no excuse and he's still a shit for doing this. His victims might be just as bad off as he is, he can't know.
SuperPickle17
Is it dishonest work? yes. But it's not like he's doing it to buy a new Lamborghini.
ScaryScarab
If he was completely honest- providing for your family is and always should be your #1 goal, a shit job doesn’t mean you’re shitty employee.
trapperjohnmd
“....Then I started a go fund me page for Patrick and his family, please follow the link and give what you can....”
LiteralVampirePotBellyGoblins
Gofundme has more protections than most charities.

Sounds like a scam tho...

It's just so hard for Eddi3v to feed his family, pray that he finds a better option than a gofundme...

But Patrick hung up, he didn't even try to make any profit. 5 seconds of sympathy is not profit.

If he had called some computer-illiterate grandmother instead of you, he would have fucked her out of a few hundred dollars (or more).
MisterWiggler37
My computer illiterate grandmother fell for a phone scheme. She lost about ten thousand. I hate scam callers.
Flexiblewarmth
and bragged about it.
TrumpRapesChildren
It's a strange thought isn't it. To think every person has a life as complex as our own in their own way. Hopefully Patrick finds a new job.
Kbantar
Everyone is so complex, full of countless facets, personalities, and experiences.
Kbantar
I think that's part of my social phobia / autism problem. I get overwhelmed seeing people, because of info overload.
andy1max
He hss aJOB doing this???
trekkiedane
Just another call-center-job... selling shit noone wants to people that aren't able to say no.
tumppu
Yes, scamming people out of their money is actually a business in various places around the world.
andy1max
I'm flabbergasted.

And unfortunately some of the only jobs hiring and paying any sort of real wage in those areas.

Though it often seems otherwise, very little people actually choose evil for evil's sake. Most do what they need to, and wouldn't you?
MrJimmyRustles
No one NEEDS to rob elderly people. I understand stealing a loaf of bread, but passing on your misery to an innocent stranger is fucked up.
Tarmaccian
Everyone tries to do what they think is right, as the hero of their own story. Our only differences are the cultural values we've learned.
youhavenovalues
No, I would not do evil to innocent victims because I thought I "needed to." Having values means living according to them when it's hard.
DaveC426913
Easy to say. Until your children go hungry.
circleit
My friend, I pray that your words are never tested, and that you can forgive the trespasses of those who's were.
CustomBuiltFamilyDad
Providing for your children even though you think it will literally damn you is pretty strong evidence of "values" though.
BloodworthyJoe
I think it’s about choosing the least evil you can when faced with tough life choices.
lhasafever
Well, and damn those you're fucking out of money too. They probably have children they like to feed as well.
CustomBuiltFamilyDad
Right! In many traditional value systems a good father will murder innocents to feed his children, if there is absolutely no other option.
CustomBuiltFamilyDad
That's the extreme example, obviously, but there's gradations; for example you might cheat a rich westerner to provide funds for education.
