Why don't we use these straws in every restaurant around the world? A Vietnamese company is making 100% compostable single-use straws out of local grey sedge grass.

It's about money. Where I used to work, we bought in bulk. Plastic straws cost 1c each. Paper cost 3c. God knows what that costs. Companies
KingCharlesIIX
even less for big companies like McDonalds, you think they're about to spend 1c on 1,000,000,000,000 Straws that's $10B
iCurse
Plastic is cheap and not a lot of people are allergic to it, so it makes sense
YpsilantiRomani
Also plastic is a byproduct of petroleum so the oil lobby goes after anyone trying to pass bills that would have make plastic straws illegal
ZachManDo
But if people push companies to incorporate them, it’ll put more pressure/incentives for eco companies to lower costs. Like all eco shit!
filben7
Plastic spoons cost $.01 more than a metal spoon.
tacticusprime
Also paper straws are shit, and the worst kind of faux environmentalism. More distraction from the real problems.
thehumanoidsarecoming
Start nowhere until you can do it wholesale. Break everything at once. That should work, just see how well people are handling paper straws
tacticusprime
Plastic straws, especially from the US, contribute basically nothing at all to ocean pollution. Paper straws are not biodegradable.
thehumanoidsarecoming
Exactly, its a start. The intent was to go with all cutterly, but current cheap safely degradable spoons melt in hot soup.
thehumanoidsarecoming
This was all we could really roll out with. Does that bother you?
tacticusprime
In fact they usually take more energy and cause more pollution to produce than plastic ones. Paper straws cannot be recycled.
tacticusprime
Paper straws are nothing but malicious virtue signaling that hurt the environment and distract from actual environmentalism.
jmeyers1983
Not if it’s part of a larger conversation of eliminating single-use. Multi-use plastic with better recycling tech is what we need.
tacticusprime
Just like the anti-littering campaigns by the very companies producing the waste. Paper is still a very toxic thing to create. It's waste.
thewiggins

tacticusprime
No it's still a distraction propagated by businesses to further put the onus of environmental protection on consumers rather than producers.
thehumanoidsarecoming
... but the bans in most cases are on restaurants providing them for free, not consumers. It's the next step from plastic bag reduction.
tacticusprime
Which is also bullshit. That kind of consumer behavior has no effect on the environment. It's just virtue signaling.

DoctahGhostly
I’ve used them - a LITTLE bit. Way less noticeable with strong drinks like coffee but if you drink water with them it has a grassy taste.

A little bit, but iced coffee is so strong, it gets lost in the flavor.
