The facilities DHS/ICE has been trying to build out... is FAR beyond any need for their designated mission. The Obama administration deported nearly 4 million illegal immigrants and no massive warehouse system was required.
No... the places built are multi-purpose. First the immigrants, then the political prisoners. And then any citizen that they deem "non-compliant."
There will be work with no pay... and then "disposal units" for those to be eliminated.

To add, since I realize on second reading that it's not entirely clear, he survived the concentration camp and wrote the poem after the war, in 1946. Definitely a complicated man, though, which he readily admitted. He pushed for the Stuttgart Declaration of Guilt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuttgart_Declaration_of_Guilt ), where leaders of the protestant church admitted their failure in opposing the Nazis. Became a staunch pacifist and advocate for nuclear disarmament later in life.

To be fair, Niemöller wouldn't have been able to claim the "I didn't follow politics" route, as he both published an autobiography that praised Hitler in 1933, and actively preached against Jews in his sermons (against Jews who stuck to their faith, at least, he did support converts to protestantism and tried to protect them). His antisemitism is very much part of his complicated history, and was one of the reasons why he didn't get legal "victim of the nazis" status after the war.

I think it's much worse than that. We *are* taught about the Holocaust. Not in depth, but we do go over the build-up to it and the camps, even with our shitty public schools.
There's a difference between knowing something and caring enough to expend oneself to stop any of it. When push comes to actual shove, I've seen any number of excuses. The reason changes, but the refusal never does.

part of the problem is that holocaust education makes it too distant. the nazis are depicted as exceptional in their evil (thus making it difficult to internalize that everyday people are just as capable of becoming them) and the death camps are portrayed as history first and foremost (thus making it feel too "in the past" to feel prescient). the scariest footage i ever saw of hitler was a color home movie of him living a happy life on his retreat.
