People who used proper eclipse glasses also spent more time staring without blinking unconsciously through them, causing their eyes to be a little raw despite being properly protected and not taking damage from the sun.

Yep. My eyes were a bit dry and irritated cause I'm basically staring at something and resisting blinking for minutes at a time. BF had it worse, the eclipse glasses didn't want to get along with his usual prescription glasses so he was having to try and focus without his prescription plus the not blinking thing, his eyes were sore af for about 20-30 mins after cause the muscles were like 'hey dumbass you have glasses, use them!', but none of that is permanent.

I think the problem was some areas had cloud cover. And the clouds acted as a filter to outline the sun/moon. But, the sun was still bright enough to burn a hole in your face. Folks may have thought the clouds were enough filter to be safe.

They probably had 80% or more. Boston was 93% It still makes sense. If you're in the total zone the moon itself 1/2ass protects you too far away and its just staring at the sun.

Thank you for this. But I am not sure this applies to me. I was stuck inside in a room with no windows before and after the eclipse (meeting hell mondays). One of my friends suggested the moon was defecting additional sunlight (8am, 5pm) and that's what caused it. I checked some weather sites and airborne particle count was lower than average. I didn't find an actual measurement of luminosity outside to compare.

Glasses used for looking at the sun go further than simply being "very dark". The sun emits harmful radiation in far more than just the visible light spectrum, and the lenses need to be able to filter those out as well. And more than that, ISO 12312-2 also deals with things like the quality and uniformity of the protection.
There's a reason that people who buy cheap glasses with fake certifications get sore eyes after using them.

But you see big standard number made by big standards organisation and suddenly you think you are the big brain doing big thinking by abiding by big standarderino. The ISO standard is basically mimicking a 12 shade on visible spectrum. However 5 shade minimums or low-e window pane would pass IR limits, and 9 shade or any cheap chinesium UV blocking film passes UVA/UVB limits. Making it dark enough, but still see thru is the hard part. 14 shade is really dark, but again they are literally $1.50 so feel free to experiment staring into the sun, or double sided tape it to your camera, that's how I took my clipse pics.
