All of those wealthy "entrepreneurs" who fight to privatize with the claim that "we'll do it better and cheaper"—they've no intention to do that. Even if it starts out that way, they'll raise billing costs. Then you're stuck with them.
This is the same strategy those private equity real estate firms do. Buy up all the homes, rent them out, and then... you're paying more rent than you'd be paying for a mortgage.

the last pandemic killed something like 0.2% of the population, 0.6% died in one year of the spanish flu, and it made a bunch of ghost towns, the numbers we'd get from something like a hantavirus that can kill up to 40% of people who contract it is truly mindboggling, and that kind of lethality would turn the states into Y the last man just everyone fleeing or hiding and Yorick just being anyone with medical experience that didn't already die.

You are sorely mislead about how much of the population could die before the civilization collapses. 10% would cause a colony collapse syndrome they are all reliant on so many people they don't realize they're reliant on if 25% were to die the rest would flee or follow very very shortly. 3/4ths is just straight up anyone without a private jet and their own license or technology free farm can't even escape the country and are probably dying within 1 tank of gas radius of where they are right now.
