The contract the he fought for and signed himself, rather than finding something better and more ethical. Guarantee that he still wants to be Elon and Trumps special friend, he's just gets upset when he isn't the biggest bully in the room.

The stupid thing is it was a colossaly bad deal to begin with $100million to "reserve capacity" on their network for 15,000 homes in Northern Ontario already served by starlink costing the govt $6666 PER home, and those customers still had to pay $150 per month. Bad bad bad deal
Imissmylurk
Source? Because from what I've read it's 150,000 homes presently not serviced.
undrh2o
Starlink coverage map includes all of Northern Ontario and this Toronto Star article it's 15K homes not 150k https://www.thestar.com/business/ontario-signs-100m-deal-with-elon-musks-starlink-system/article_47841a14-c39e-55e6-ad9f-0047fdf7a551.html
Imissmylurk
Their coverage map is all of Canada, that doesn't include what is in the deal, (those cost numbers you posted.) after searching though, the deal was to provide Internet to businesses and homes not serviced, and for starlink to provide employment contracts and training to the people of the indigenous communities they would be servicing... So basically the government was paying for jobs as well as infrastructure.

Good, now the rest of the world needs to follow suit
Hal1918
Sadly more nuclear equipped countries may also be the result
CallThisAUsername
Nuclear equipped ? You mean, for energy generation ?
Hal1918
No as Tharrick answered. Both Japan (various) & South Korea (Nuri) have rockets & nuclear plants. Sadly it looks like "just in case" time has arrived. Even a dirty bomb is a big stick.
TharrickLawson
that'd be fine, but nope. it's pretty clear that the USA's word isn't worth shit when it comes to defence agreements that they signed, so any country that wants to not get shat on by Russia, China or the US should be pushing their own nuclear weapon programs as quickly as possible.
LordofGoats
Well, since the US decided to fire a bunch of people, shouldn't be terribly difficult to send someone over to borrow some of the extra nuclear weapons the US has just lying around.
Grimmrog
given how they act, yes getting all US companies off your government is the best way to keep it more safe.

It's not just what message the stupid ass trump administration is saying and showing. It's proving to the entire world that this can and WILL happen again regardless of how good our relationships are with other countries. They've fucked us for the next 100 years
KarateCanine
There's no coming back from this for generations.
Paradox1111
Some genies don't get back in the bottle.. we are dropping trade restrictions to other countries.. and once we have new contracts in place.. we won't need US product unless we get a good discount.. further losing US profit
DorgEndo
Countries being stable and having good relationships aren't the most profitable to billionaire fascists fucks
IgnisInvictus
Sane citizens are aware of this, we're not happy about it. For my entire lifetime, we've had a great relationship with Canada. It is a travesty that this administration is tossing that down the drain with this weird trade flex.

It's not a weird flex, this is exactly what Putler asked of the Tangerine Turd. He's doing his best to kill relations with our allies in favor of Russia.

Yeah. You just need a functioning space program to put sats in orbit, and there's multiple places that can do that without giving Musk more than the finger.

Yeah, he's good in a storm but weak in people skills. He took office when COVID19 broke and did many right things. But he will be remembered for his shitty decisions about health and education.
thegunch
Doug Ford is NOT someone to look up to or venerate. He is reacting to threats on Canadian sovereignty which he has supported and encouraged by actively promoting MAGA garbage over the last decade. The tariffs don't align with his specific interests but he is not opposed to further attacks on sovereignty as long as he makes a profit off it.
Do Not Pretend this man is any different from who he has shown you to be before
Muffyns
Is this guy just basically trump light?
thegunch
No - he is his own mess that isn't less severe than Trump. He is part of the same rise of the right and populism that is happening globally.
thedarkcanuck
Ten bucks says he quietly brings back Starlink once this all blows over. The man is only loyal to the almighty dollar
laserfork
Definitely. Ford is secretly desperate to play ball with them. If they had just offered a carrot instead of a stick he'd have given them whatever they asked for. But, Trump-Musk are too stupid and arrogant for that thankfully.
poppypooley
I have no idea about this man, but I like what he did
laserfork
Doug Ford is someone who went to the States in 2019 and declared himself a proud, honourary Republican. When Trump won in 2024 Ford was caught on a hot mic saying how happy he was Trump beat Harris. The only problem Ford has with Trumpism is that he's on the wrong side of it.
Harbltron
I could be wrong but I kind of doubt he'd enter into a new contract with someone that tried to strong-arm him and the rest of the country.
poppypooley
By "blows over" I like think trump falls out a widow and breaks his fucking neck
Helixninja333
It already sounds like the nazi cheeto is going to pull back the tariffs, mostly for the market manipulation. But the damage is already done: if you shit in your hand and get ready to throw it, only to stop at the last minute, no one is take you seriously anymore. Countries and markets want stability, not the meth-heads in office.
Bignholy
There's still shit in his hand. Nobody's gonna shake it now unless they got shit in their hands too.
NKato
Exactly. What Trump's been doing is the real-world equivalent of Crypto's "Dead cat bounce". They are doing *anything* they can to manipulate markets in order to profit, and obviously, other countries aren't gonna put up with that shit.
ArdentSlacker
No, Trump's goal really is the destruction of the US economy and literally all alliances and trade. And war, of course.
Nazis don't care about making money, just *taking* it. This isn't about profit, it's about shite wupremacy and control.
These people are more evil than any other attribute, whether greed, stupidity, smarts... evil comes first.
4Astaroth
Strange that many Americans still don't see how bad it already is. It's like "I can fix him" mentality when they should be out in millions more to protest everything that's going on.
suretoast
I think we’re too overwhelmed with what to protest.
LokJok
There *are* protests going on, but the MSM is purposely not covering it
Z0op
And now he got shit on his hands, what to do with it if you aont throwing ot anymore? And when hes shaking hands for new deals, everyone can see the whit on his hands. Watch out for the types that still shale it tho

hold steady Canada. We need you to be successful to prove a point that the tariffs were a stupid idea.
thegunch
Or you could take action in your own country instead of asking an entirely different country to take care of your problems?
veesee
The vast majority of Canadians are buying elsewhere. The US is finished for us. What your president has done is ensured that Canadians will never rely on the US as a trade partner again.
Unclescam
It's a lot more fundamental than just the tariffs. We need to be collectively punished as a nation for allowing Eric's dad into the White House.
HumansArePrettyNeat
And when we do, you'll finally get off your butt and do something? I doubt it. Americans will come together some day, but only around the idea that they have been the true victims this whole time.
YouRadicalizedMe
TheGreyGryphon
To be clear, the tariffs hurt us in Canada more just due to sheer differences in size of population.
Muffyns
its doug ford tho he just as likely to reinstate the contract in 24 hours
Imissmylurk
Nah, he'll give it to one of his friends instead.
NaughtButOne
If there's one thing Doug Ford is good at, it's looking out for Doug Ford. Protectionist sentiment is way too high to risk going back on any of these deals right now.
Nbiakro
That point was proven in the 1800s I believe
Buffoonery
Yeah, it was. But too many in the US don't read or understand history. Basically we're a bunch of idiots.
Nbiakro
Understanding that you've been taken for a ride proves you're not. You are living in a country with 2 very different realities and the right wing media kept half of you believing you're under constant attack for decades. (Watch Fahrenheit 9/11 if you haven't. It's pretty spot on)
The problem is the liars changed the laws so lying does not get punished. Which gives your media a free pass to just spew whatever until it works. THAT'S the problem and you can thank Reagan for that
Buffoonery
Totally Get It! I worked in broadcasting during the Raygun years. I watched it in real time as a 20 something year old engineer. You triggered me with Fahrenheit 451 reference. My mother loved her books and basically raised me on the 1966 version, along with an early WNET (pre-PBS) broadcast of 1984 (Originally aired in the 50's in the UK?). I remember asking her how could this have happened. As an 8 year old, I couldn't believe people could let things get so bad. 59 years later, here we are.
Nbiakro
Fahrenheit 451 is a great piece of world literature but I was referring to Fahrenheit 9/11 (the title is a reference to the book), a documentary by Michael Moore from 2004. It's about the US media since 9/11 and how they lean more and more into hate and fear mongery

And 1900s.

Canada need the US as much as the US needs Canada. So by the time they would break, the US would be at the same point. But Canada is likely to get more international support than the US right now.
Everyonesfavorite
Canada might get more us support than the US from the US pretty soon. They are finding out, but are they capable.of changing their minds?
GoodChange
Since trump is fighting with Mexico, china and the eu as well the US is likely to feel it more than Canada.
Anonaru
Pretty much everyone wants what Canada is supplying to the US en masse. I almost hope Trump pushes too hard, people aren't lining up to play nice with America anymore

Ristari
Yea we talked about this last night after his commerce sec made a comment about lifting the tariffs already. Would 100% point to them doing crashes on purpose to buy crap cheaper. They did a pump and dump right before he took office so, it's not like there isn't precedent here

Dougie feels like he's been insulted by Trump, so he's done a 180 to preserve his own toxic masculinity.
guywhodoesthings
Don't forget friend, Dougie primised to scrap the contract in Feb as well. I'll believe it when I see it.
HeShallKnowYourWaysAsIfBornToThem
He didn't because the tariffs were delayed. You may not like him, but that's not an excuse to distort the facts. You're as guilty as the other side if you do that.
guywhodoesthings
Dougie also was caught on hot mic saying how glad he was that trump won. All I'm saying is we cannot blindly trust our politcians; I don't think not accepting his word as gospel is distorting the facts friend.

Populists/nationalists might support each other trying to get elected (see JD Vance boosting Neonazis and undermining of supporting electoral interference in Romania), but once they're in power, we would return to the days of north american and european nations sending young men to each others countries to die because of petty disputes.
mercyPandaRunner
That's sadly more than true. They all cooperate right now, seeming almost like one big family. But the goal they work towards is separating us along border fences again. Both physical and mental border fences.
They tell you about how nice the world will be, once they oust the (((globalists))) realise their "ethnopluralism" and we all get to live amongst ourselves in our own little boxes again. But what they don't tell you is, that each of those boxes has their own egotistical interests and >
mercyPandaRunner
their own petty grudges with each other and their own little populist autocracies that will not hesitate to play on those petty grudges and exploit out otherness from each other to convince people to force those egotistical interests through at the cost and against the resistance of those other boxes.
Which is a longer way of saying what you say. They will fight each other over things that you could have if you worked together. And with "they will fight", i mean you will fight at their orders.
zFUBARz
I am curious though (in a morbid way) because now there is quite literally a global cabal or right wing think tanks, investors and deal makers, (and those fuckers complain about Soros) ironically Stephen Harper is one of the major ones. Will that hold back some of that destructive instinct they seem to have for any length of time. We shall see.
mercyPandaRunner
I think we overestimate how much the think tank class and their patrons actually care about nations.
Nationalism is the peanut butter and leash they use to bait the plebs and keep them in line. Capital knows no borders.
In other words, Fanta came to be, because the Coca Cola companies german subdivision was unable to procure the ingredients to make Coca Cola, due to the little obstacle of WW2 going on. So they invented a replacement soft drink that they could produce and sell in the war time>

That is what happened before the start of WWII. The world went crazy because of a few bad leaders. People thinking they had it bad and blaming others for their shitty lives would make things better. We must enter the darkness so we can once again appreciate and strive for the light of goodness.

Not that, Sunak saying Zelensky was treated wrongly, also Badenoch calling Zelensky a 'Hero', I even saw something from Farage that was sensible - but can't recall offhand.
