If it was so easy, then what the heck were all the other Mayors doing?

Other mayors were getting dark money under the table commonly known as getting your palms greased.

What they're doing is listening to conservative voices that just want poor people to suffer.
Mamdani is what happens when you stop giving cruelty a voice.

They weren't good people

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mamdani is showing us they difference between "I Can't" and "I Won't. All the things they said he can't do, and he is doing them.

This is great but, who is picking up the bill for the other half? are taxes going up? the city needs money to run infrastructure, it's great to do this sort of stuff but the money needs to come from somewhere. ideally the corpos that have been dodging tax for decades.

I guess the guy has been on an absolute WTAF-spree since he entered that office... like one hearty WTAF every 3 minutes or so when seeing what the predecessors did(n't)

If we're talking about Eric Adams, he was making videos about how to search your child's room for something as simple as a crack pipe in their popular knapsack with many different locations.

Other things: Speeding citations and other fines should be based on your income level.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lining their pockets with kickbacks from property developers, mostly.

"Mamdani gets in, and he's like 'Oh yeah there's just a button. You just have to press this button, and then stuff gets done.'"

Stealing all the money and collecting a paycheck while not giving two turtle shits what everyone else is doing. Now imagine how little senators are doing especially now that they have orange mousalini and the Nazi heritage foundation drafting all their laws for them

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That is the question, isn't it?

1 month ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

NYC has its own city budget and NYC funds many of its own services locally, reducing the need for state spending inside the city.

Man I thought the right said we would be getting our problems solved through jihad so far zero jihad, most disappointing.

1 month ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

you know that jihad just means "a lot of effort" right? kinda seems like mamdani's working hard

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yes but I haven't been called on by him to Jihad it is like somehow the money paid in taxes is benefiting the people with little to no Jihad on my part.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i mean he did call on all new yorkers to do a jihad on the snowbanks that one time

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Making money from keeping the prices up?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It so weird that you can spend tax money on actual beneficial things instead of just stuff for rich people.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Funding their own private friends and businesses

1 month ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 2

You mean RepugliKKKns, right?

1 month ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

They are NOT all the same. What RepugliKKKn has done what Mamdani has done! They only care about lining their own pockets, and have no empathy. Look at what the "Great Big Beautiful Bill" has done, killing ACA for people who have no other way to get health care, going after immigrants that are citizens, or have no criminal record. tRump, Vance and McConnell had [in Mitch's case widow]. Not to mention racists. >

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If you say they are both the same, then you must also be a racist like them.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Mostly but they also got a lot of money to the establishment Democrats as well who like to play both sides and at this point are only Dinos (Democrat in name only) they intentionally pretend to act like they are left facing but then when it looks like we might slide to far from center right they undermine democrats so republicans win. Looking at you Chuck Shcumer and Nancy Pelosi you 2 leading pieces of shit.

Being right wingers and pocketing mad cash, mostly. And skipping their meds in Eric Adams's case, that dude was just a full blown lunatic.

1 month ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Public transit should be free, as it is a public good. But this is a great start towards that!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Saw a video where NY's government is set up in a way that allows mamdani to be effective. Other cities like LA can be decentralized which makes this kind of change difficult.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's nice to see a politician that isn't all talk and actually gets shit done, especially at such a rate that he has done.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Public faith and optimism can make an incredible difference.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So...this guy got any siblings who can run for Mayor in my city? Would lvoe to see actual change for better...

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Every other mayor was mostly working to accept bribes.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Picking the public's pockets.

1 month ago | Likes 164 Dislikes 7

Well that, and giving cops more money.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure those low income people do a lot of the real work NYC...

Hopefully this is a case of not realizing that the top level comment was in response to OPs title, not the headline in the screenshot.

They are being sarcastic.

the audacity! (a panamax of /S because there's accounts on here too stupid to be left alone in a tub of water...)

Better than pocking public pickets.

or pucking the piblics peckits.

Or picking at pubic pus

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh look a spoonerism.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Because the best way to pick someone's pocket is to leave more money in it than when you started

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

They were responding to the title, not the picture

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Definitive articles help to avoid confusions like this... i.e THEY WERE picking the public's pockets

Good old Number 7 train. That was my train behind my house when I lived in Elmhurst.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The more I see these type of headline the more I fear we'll wake up one day with a headline about how he committed suicide by multiple gunshot wounds at the back of the head.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you know what really pisses me off, when he took office his team did an audit and found that only a tiny fraction of the income and property taxes that new york city contributed to the state, got spent on new york city.

1 month ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 4

that's pretty much how you'd expect it to work. It's more a question of whether that fraction is the correct fraction. But the financial center of the state will tend to fund the rest of the state, yeah.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Largely a function of population density, and applies everywhere. More people sharing the same infrastructure costs makes it cheaper per person. Also, lots of wealth and business activity in a concentrated space means lots of economic activity to tax. As a big city liberal, I’m OK with that — but give us props. Rural county exec (GOP) in our state — a county that gets $3.25 in spending per $1 tax — complained that their taxes goes to fund drug addicts in my city. It fucking doesn’t.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you have a source for this? I wanna see the actual numbers and cant find anything about it. I just keep getting articles about a.) His budget 2.) His audit of federal immigration ●.) His own tax returns. But nothing about what your talking about

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's all cities. All cities subsidize the suburbs because of difference in infrastructure costs per capita (the infrastructure like roads and power relay to the spread out population in suburbs and rural areas is MASSIVELY higher than providing those services in high density areas). New York is just a good example, but this is an issue for every city. Lower income wage slaves in the city are paying for the roads, water, sewer, etc to their managers mcmansions.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yep. No suburbs pay their own way. Start here (Not Just Bikes): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJp5q-R0lZ0_FCUbeVWK6OGLN69ehUTVa

wdym he talked at length about the funding deficit he was left with when he took office in the first month

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

"talking at length" isn't a source. How naive do you have to be to think that everything a politician says is the total truth?! I support Mamdani's policies, but I will NEVER hero worship any human being and believe everything they say. Everything requires a citation.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No i mean the state spending vs their paid taxes thing

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You know that is how taxes work right? The small parts pay into a larger system, this is not going to be an even split.

1 month ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 6

That's not a nuanced take. The cost of existence for city dwellers is massively lower than it is for their rural / exurban / suburban counterparts. The further you live from a city center, the more tax revenue you consume, especially in the form of infrastructure. The way that taxes are handled is such that lower income citizens in cities are subsidizing the existence of higher income citizens in the suburbs. It's all backwards and low thought takes like this are what prevent fixing it.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ok but where does the majority of the population of new york state live? is it upstate? or is 90% of the population living and working in manhattan?

1 month ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

And as the majority voting block the city can put there people in Albany. I am not defending it, but if you want to have a government of any size then the public funds split will not be even. The other option it to arbitrarily define everyone's contribution as equal... that does not work at all so here we are.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

mamdanis predecessors were definitely embezzling and mismanaging funds on purpose, intentionally defaulting new york city in order to harm his admin

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Approximately half of NY state’s population lives in NYC and Long Island.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait till you find out where most of New Yorker’s federal taxes go. Hint: It doesn’t come back to NY. Nationally or at the state level, the populated areas heavily subsidize the less populous areas.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Roughly 64% of the state's population lives in the New York City metropolitan area and 40% in New York City alone" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_New_York_(state)

1 month ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

and yet the city was running a deficit of billions while the suburbs got far more than they needed

1 month ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

lemme put it a different way, are you happy your taxpayer dollars are going to refurbish a gaudy jet that Trump gets to keep? Instead of roads getting repaved and bridges getting rebuilt?

1 month ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

Well if roads are your metric, there are more roads in the rest of the state than in new york city. And while theres certainly room to argue they arent getting enough back, the basic idea of new yorks progressive tax rate IS that wealthy areas pay more which then goes to less-wealthy areas that pay less. So, while nyc undoubtedly needs more, and deserves more, of that money, the idea that you will or should get ALL that money back to your area is wrong because that would mean wealth stays in 1/

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

There are more roads but not more road use. NYC and NYS both maintain Open Data portals and you will find that NYC sees a hell of a lot heavier usage. Much like "empty land doesn't vote," road wear is affected by traffic.
Also the poster you've replied to is saying that more should come back to NYC. Not all of it. I don't see anyone in this thread proposing the strawman you've set up and then cleverly defeated.
